I'm posting this here as a rough aid to the current JIRA issue: http://jira.secondlife.com/browse/SVC-972There's a perception (right or wrong) that not many people bother to find and vote for issues like this that affect them on the JIRA, so I thought I'd place a quick poll here to gauge how common this particular problem is for people.

Many thanks to initial voters! Keep em coming! And if you are one of the lucky "It doesn't happen to me" types, it'd be very handy if you'd add a post saying which viewer you are using. Cheers!

I use the Windlight client and it happens at a ratio of 6:10 times. Recently, LL 'returned' over 600,000 inventory items to over 143,000 users from the borked database system. Loggin you out at TP, is often associated with your inventory (the less you have, the less likely you will fail at TP) and is associated to lag issues. It is at the TP point, that your avatar and its inventory index is transfered to the sim server, along with all the items you are wearing. Have too much, will lag the server nodes and you time out.
Try this, clean out all the trash and unwanted objects from your inventory, strip down to standard SL layered clothing and TP about... quicker isnt it?

/me isn't sure about the inventory size thing - worn stuff is understandable but I don't see why the sim should care about the size of your (unworn) inventory..
Either way, I have this logout-on-tp happen to me sometimes and it's pretty annoying. XP, latest RC viewer.
/me goes to JIRA and votes.

This is hapenning to me for about 4 months, so it seems not a viewer problem or they never worried to fix it. I think that people nearer LL servers (US, Canada) have less problems that rest of people, but I'm not sure about this.

From: AWM Mars Guess you would need a better understanding of the serverseide metrics. Since I don't work for LL, I don't see my understanding of this area getting a whole lot better. Do you know of a reason why a sim would care about the size of your idle inventory?? From: AWM Mars Have you tried my suggestion as a benchmark? Deleteing everything but the standard LL stuff from my inventory??? Uh.. No, I have not tried that yet and unless you want to give me a big bag of cash to replace it all, I'm probably not going to try it. I am good about taking out the trash, though, and since I'm a prim critter, my inventory isn't _that_ big anyway - people who can wear clothes, especially woman-folk, seem to have much bigger inventories.

I might crash 1 in 500 teleports, doing around 20 per day in a 4 hour window. I use First Look, RC and standard viewers. I keep my inventory under 8000 items, wear few scripted items, and under 400 prims. I have a 2 yo midrange games spec PC, with quaklity ADSL from Australia and do better than people in the same suburb as LL

Just to add... I doubt the inventory size is a factor in the TP problem. Yes having a huge inventory is rumoured to cause that particular AV lag (though I guess it's just because they are constantly downloading the inventory list to local cache and don't know it). Having a lot of worn prim attachments *may* be a factor, though not in an obvious way. That's more likely to cause the "ass-tachments" bug. As far as LL have tracked it down so far, it's a server side problem involving specific packet loss. But anyway, the poll here was really to see if it's just a few people, or a majority of people getting the problem. From the results so far it seems fairly widespread.

Actually, I didn't say anything about deleting everything from your inventory, I did say 'Try this, clean out all the trash and unwanted objects from your inventory, strip down to standard SL layered clothing and TP about... quicker isnt it?'
When you TP to a new location, the items you are wearing/using, including HUDs, etc all have to be loaded onto the server you are currently on, this is then broadcast to any avatars on that sim and adjoining sims (land in a land mass and you could be surrounded by 8 sims), the asset server is polled for a list of the items you have on and are using, this is cached ready for broadcasting. If you arrive with a AO thats a bit fancy, those details have to also be broadcasted so that everyone can see your 'fantastic' entrance.
Once there, the inventory index is cached, so that it is ready to be 'seen' and again broadcasted between each avatar and adjoining sims (child objects), when you drag something out and drop it/use it. Add to that any sound effects you bring with you, and again thats cached and broadcasted. Anything on the sim server is then broadcasted to your client of anyone on that sim and adjacent sims.
Add a bit of time dilations to the mix, and you have packet loss and lag. The more you bring, the more that's there, the more lag.

When I get logged out after a tp (very rare) it's always due to a laggy or crashed sim on either end. Tp'ing is also instant and consistent with a 12k inventory so from my experience I'd have to say inventory size isn't a factor at all.
There's also no discernable difference between my alt tp'ing (which barely has any inventory and just the bare essential attachments) and me tp'ing.

Every single time - with the LL viewer and 5K inventory Every single time - with the Nicholaz viewer and 5K inventory.
My husband gets logged out each time he TP's anywhere and he has about 100 more things than the standard inventory. (using both viewers as well)
The two of us cant see beyond the sim borders either.
And we're wired.
I've just accepted it, as has he.

Have you tried my suggestion as a benchmark? Inventory size has no bearing on Teleport performance. Since you seem to need some brushing up on serverside metrics yourself, see my previous post: /327/44/231956/2.html#post1814612I have 23k inventory, and have rarely if ever had the issue, until just before Christmas. It's suddenly become more of an issue. The latest incarnation is interesting. The Avatar is actually transported to the new destination, but it seems the new sim is not informed of the viewer's IP address, and therefore fails to communicate with the viewer, causing the AV's session to eventually be terminated. I would hazard a guess that there is some commuincation glitch on LL's side, Avatars are not being transported between sims reliably. Simple as that.

Always gets logged out
01-09-2008 09:02
I've seen a friend of mine walk around looking stupid in SL (**** you Clone) and he had the problem ever since he started get online this SecondLife thing...
Yesterday I started up an account and downloaded SL, and even though my inventory is rather empty and only got the newbie stuff, I too gets logged off when I teleport. I don't know if it's the computer, the internet or SL... But I have been using the last few hours searching for a solution and all I've found is issues, wonderings and guessings where the one with the issues answer it didn't work.
I wouldn't be surprised if it got something to do with a firewall in my net router or something to do about opening ports in the router, but whenever somebody suggest that it might be the "router-problem" I never know how to solve it.
Me friend once tried to contact linden laps but they just told him to reinstall the game... but when he said he had done that and asked what to do then they didn't answer.

I have been having that problem for well over a month now. I have sent in a few support tickets also. The first response I got from LL was somewhat helpful..it worked for a day or so, then things went right back to crashing on about 60-70% of my TP tries. I thought i t was my computer until I found out there are a lot of us out there going through the same thing. All I can suggest is to hang in there..it's frustrating but.. do what I do when You crash on TP.. take that few minutes you are out of game to grab a coffee..use the restroom, grab a smoke or a sammich..lol * hey, gotta look on the bright side, ya know?*

If you do a search in support / knowledge base for "ports" or "firewall" you should be able to find articles to tell you which ones need to be open for SL. Am not promising it will cure anything, but it will mean you've eliminated one possible cause.

I too have been experiencing this problem - it always seems at random times of the day or night, so I've been trying to track down why.
One thing I have noticed is the logging in bar - if "initializing world" takes longer than a few seconds to load then there's a very high chance that TP's will not work for me - if it takes the normal few seconds to load, everything runs fine and I can TP all over the place.
Has anyone else noticed this ??

I've also been having this problem since the same day I started SL. ( As have tghe other 2 users in the house, Different computers.) I run a hardware firewall with proxy server, Privoxy n a few other things. Initially I thought it was one of my addons to the firewall , But disabling them made no difference. Then I thought Try cleaning the squid cache, ( Both manually, & using the clear cache function) I Rented an apartment at raven court, after one day of residing there ..LogOut on TP to there every single time. A couple of days later I could get back there.. "For a DAY !!) ever since I cant tp to anywhere on that sim. So wasted my rent money there.. There are a couple more that will not let me land anytime, but offhand cant recall what they are, same with my son. there are just a couple of sims he cant tp to. ( different to mine) I really would like to know the cause of this. My firewall gives no errors on the said sims neither does my IDS so almost certain its not down to port range ive allowed.
The machines throughout the house are a mix of Linux boxes and XP Pro boxes, and the problem does not seem to discriminate between OS's. ( or inventory sizes. ) One thing I hav'nt tried yet is a packet capture when this happens, maybe that would reveal some info.
Certainly has me baffled ATM ..

Stopping my lurking just to post here, since this is an issue I have been dogged with for many months now - through various RC and Windlight clients. My teleport logout is so random I can't even come close to tracking it. Wearing a lot, wearing little, teleporting in the same sim, to a different sim... even the FIRST teleport from when I log might fail. Or I might go days without one. It's really really frustrating!

I was able to TP yesterday and today no problem, when previously I was logged out every single time. I'm guessing the moving house, and different broadband supplier helped!

I can't see any correlation between days when every second tp fails and kicks me and weeks when nothing happens, so I gather it's not on my side.

<-- Currently using Dazzle, but frequently use Windlight and the primary viewer as well (to test LOD and other visual changes), and I cannot recall the last time I was logged out on teleport. I get logged out pretty randomly and frequently at other times, but it's been many months since I've been logged out on teleport.

There was a bug a few months back that when you TPed from an island to another island it would log you out or just fail to work. The workaround is to TP to a mainland location, then to the island you are aiming for. I've seen this bug pop up again in the past week or so. I keep a LM to a mainland location available in my Picks tab so it's an easy hop, skip, and jump "Detour TP".
