You might see if you can take your computer over to several different people's houses and measure the ping time you get at each spot. It would be good if one of the spots was as close as possible to your former location.

As I said, i used to live ten minutes from here and the ping time was fine. I know others that live in Melbourne and indeed Australia and THEIR ping times are fine. As for people "near here" - we only recently moved so I dont know any people in this area. I cant really go lugging my massive PC, monitor, keyboard, speakers etc etc to random people's houses saying 'can i try your internet""
Does ANYONE know ANYTHING i can do about this? I did all the tests people said to do and I still dont know why this is happening! I got some numbers but I dont know what they mean or what to do! Ive been told changing ISPs wont help because its how my house phoenline connect through the server that causes the ping time. But Ive also been told using wireless wont work because wireless is lousy for online gaming.
Am I totally stuffed? Will I have to move house to get Second Life working again? Or is there SOME WAY to see WHY my ping time is so high, and then *fix it?!*.
I want help fixing this, please please!

From: Cosmic Buccaneer As I said, i used to live ten minutes from here and the ping time was fine. I know others that live in Melbourne and indeed Australia and THEIR ping times are fine. Yes, that is one of the fun parts of DSL and phones lines in general. Nearby locations can be hooked up through wildly different wiring paths, hooked into completely different equipment, and so on, just because the systems kind of grew organically over many years. If you haven't done it already, a request to the phone company to check out the quality of your line might not be a bad idea, but it's up to them if they think the line is good enough, and rerouting you onto a nicer bit of wire isn't always going to be an option.

Thanks you so much for your reply.
I will call them, but I need to know exactly what i am asking.
Do I simply say the ping time on my online gaming is terrible, and I need to know...what phone line I go through? Or how my phone is wired? What's the specific thing I'm asking?
Now, one more question: how does cable work - is that totally different to ADSL and wireless, is it a different thing again? And are there any other connection-types I could get, or is it phoneline, wireless, or nothing?
THANKYOU again. It's been at least 7 weeks since I was without second life and I cry about it at night.

Just stick to the basics I would think, tell them that pings to the US are a lot longer than when you lived down the street, and ask if they can test the line to see if there is unexpected noise. They should know what to do from there, or at least tell you who else to call because it's not their department's problem On your end, you can double-check that anything plugged into the phone lines has a filter, and that you don't have any appliances with motors, transformers, etc. too close to the lines (most appliances are well behaved but once in a while you get a "noisy" one). Cable would use an entirely different infrastructure from the DSL service, so it could be better or worse, it has its own set of variables. It is going to be tough to get a prediction on the performance if you can't find any neighbors to pin down and interrogate

I'll also look into cable...
Is there any other options, or are cable, ADSL and wireless the only 3??

From: someone the ping time was fine "was" refers to the past. The idea of moving your computer is to find out your computer's status in the present. From: someone lugging my massive PC, monitor, keyboard, speakers etc etc to random people's houses saying 'can i try your internet"" The box that holds the motherboard would be the only part one would need to move. From: someone i used to live ten minutes from here From: someone I cant really go lugging my massive PC, monitor, keyboard, speakers etc etc to random people's houses It's certainly possible that if you used to live ten minutes away you might know someone in a useful location.

From: Cosmic Buccaneer 1. Does my computer connect through the same route every time I start SL? Because this happens EVERY TIME. And I need to stop it. Are you sure changing ISPs wont make it connect through a different route. Yes, the same servers are involved for login and whatnot. Switching ISPs would change what route you're taking to make the connection (as does anytime the short way through is down or otherwise not available from your ISP). From: someone 2. I think i might've gotten the KB/s and Kb/s mixed up. one is much bigger than the other, yes? I'm getting the bigger one. One of them has a capital B or K or something and the other one doesn't. The Metric System is your friend, but capitalisation is important. kB=kilobytes, kb=kilobits. From: someone I USED TO use this computer at a different house and it worked fine. So it HAS to be something to do with the connection. BUT I don't know if it is my ISP, or if it is the server my computer is trying to connect through. Given that other people are able to log in without troubles, you can eliminate the server end from the problem. From: someone Can someone please tell me if THIS will work (this is my reasoning): 1. SL looks at where I am and then makes me go through a certain server. No. It's a grid, you log in, and then you're handed off to whatever server the sim you're in is running on. Where you're located in first life doesn't make any difference. From: someone 3. IF I got wireless, would the...umm...adress that my computer connects through be any different? Because then I'm not connecting through phonelines, I'm connecting through..what? Airwaves? No... the geolocation will still be the location of the registration of the netblock your connected to (probably your ISP's office).

From: Sindy Tsure Interesting.. I've never seen that error before. Googling [tracert "reports: Destination protocol unreachable"] results in a bunch of people from your neck of the world having the same issue with things in ar7. Be aware that the entire 10/8 network is non-routable; anything in this network isn't a real network but rather something that's behind a NAT. If you're finding the same problem with other users, I suspect the problem is with your DSL bridge; if you're leasing it from your telephone company, insist they send you one of a different make and model.

From: Cosmic Buccaneer Hmmm...that's weird, i dont know much about all this computer stuff, but what i just did doesnt seem to relfect what's going on in SL. In SL it tells me there's lots of packet loss and the ping time is over 600ms. You either have your network bandwidth set in your viewer far too high, or less likely, far too low.
