Any One Out There!

still cant get into second life my system details windows xp media centre edition version 2002,sp2 pentium(r) D cpu 3.40ghz 2 gb ram nvidia geforce 7600 gs
The error/crash happens when i try and log in,the sl black screen appears, then the crash bar runs on the top left of the screen and flickers, followed by a pop up in the middle saying that sl has crashed.
On the further details tab,off the pop up,the details are as follows: error signature name app name.secondlife.exe appver 1.19.14 modname unknown mod ver 0.0.0.0 offset 00060144 error report contents i have noticed that the offset number is always slightly different at times i.e. 00060116,0006017e etc
The detailed report is sooo long i havent a clue! not that any of the above makes much sense to me. Yesterday i deleted the sl cache, uninstalled s.l.,deleted files and did a defrag rebooted reinstalled sl and it worked (a.m.) then in the evening back to square one. hope this may give you some idea of the problem! its sooo frustrating!!! thanks in advance peggy
I have just noticed in the crash log that flickers it says: sending to alternate server 1

You can get it run one time, then you have to uninstall and reinstall to get it run again? Wow, never heard that one. Or did you crash out of SL after a while and then you cannot get SL to run without crashing on log in? If it's the latter you might be looking at a heating problem causing the initial crash after some time running SL. And the crash is corrupting some files. Just a guess. Have you updated your drivers for your video card? That message you get with the crash logger is common. Seems SL's crash logger server doesn't work the way it should.....and the logger tries to send to an alternate server. My guess it never gets the logger sent to SL.

Are you running background programs when trying to log in to SL? Instant messagers, email checkers and such. Are you using Norton Anti Virus? Norton has a pretty poor reputation about cooperating with SL........McAfee also has this problem but not as severe. I use AVG Free 8.0 and have no issues. I'm not sure if anti malware might cause such a problem if it's actively scanning........I use both Windows Defender and AVG and they actively scan for malware.......I have no problems though. I doubt it's your firewall since it would simply stop your computer from connecting to SL........not crash you.
Another thought that I can think of. Some computers have problem running SL full screen. Before you log in but after you get to your login screen drop down the "edit" menu and go to "preferrences". Make sure the box is checked to "run SL in a window". That may help.

6.14 is what they try to push on me with my 6600Gt's and its quite old, but yet it works just fine with my setup (i havent downloaded the newest since i reinstalled last week) 175.16 is the most updated driver edit ok so i got off my ass and installed the 175 driver and gained 5 fps in lightsmark, both work well with SL so... try reinstalling Direct X then the 175 driver on nvidia's website (it should point you there automaticly) cause something else must be borked ALSO! download this little utility http://www.cpuid.com/download/cpuz_145.zip run it and click on the mainboard tab, tell us what chipset is listed please

If the above advice does not help, also try downloading the release candidate viewer, and report what happens with that.

1.19 is the viewer, so needless to say, you need it installed to run it.
If you're installing the RC viewer, it is independant of 1.19.
Delete the 1.19 installer, and clear your browsers temporary Internet files. Then download the installer again.

If your computer is acting up in other ways than just SL and it's causing problems for you a format and reinstallation of your OS and starting over could fix your problems..........but I wouldn't go that far yet. Formating and reinstallation of your OS means you loose all the updates you have recieved on any program you have (including XP).........and even those programs will be gone and need to be reinstalled. All your drivers will have to be updated..........not just your video driver. If your problem is mainly with SL a format is really drastic and may not solve the problem either. I believe your main problem is your graphics driver. The reinstallation of your operating system will not fix that for you.........the proper driver will. And on the uninstalling of the old driver for your card. No, your computer won't go wonky without a driver. You will have rather poor quality video since XP will use a generic driver until you get the one you need. Your screen will likely look like one of those 80's monitors is all. Here's the procedure I use for updating my drivers. It works for me so I feel confindent it will work for you too. First, go find the driver you need (I think you did that already). Download it to your hard drive (I save to a folder I made for drivers on my second partitian of this drive.......to your desktop is fine too). Then I always scan my downloads with my anti virus just to be safe. Go to your control panel and select "add/remove". Unintall all video drivers listed. You will probably have to restart and XP will alert you that if found new hardware (the video card in your machine). Tell the wizzard to install from the file you saved. Follow the instructions and XP will want you to restart again........do it. Besides a little tweaking with the settings for your card you are done. Not hard at all.

If you uninstall your existing video drivers, XP will revert to using a generic SVGA driver. You will have either a 640x480 or 800x600 resolution, and will have no video acceleration (so everything will be slow, even scrolling web pages will be slow.
The RC viewer is the Release Candidate viewer. It's listed on the SL download page.
I suggested it as something quick you can try. I'm not sure if it would help or not.
