1.4.9 RESETS AGP HACK
08-06-2004 15:06
1.4.9 just came out and undid my hack. You'll need to reapply it!

Sidenote: 1.4.9 took about 5 minutes to actually shut down the first time out. I'll update if it repeats.

I assumed any new updates would reset the file, so I already updated it. :)

That's strange. Launching and quitting SL 1.4.9 happens in under 10 seconds for me.

Rumor about 10.3.5

From: someone
New Mac OS X 10.3.5 developer seed Build 7M32 of Mac OS X 10.3.5 was seeded to developers Friday.

Its file size has remained basically unchanged at 42MB, but the seed notes did list a handful of changes for testers to focus on:

*Safari/Webkit
*File Sharing
*GPU drivers
*Core Graphics
*Core Audio
*Bluetooth

Most sources continue to project the release of 10.3.5 in September, following Apple's next major product release event -- probably featuring the iMac G5.

10.3.5 is available now via Software Update! I'm downloading it right now. I'll report back, hopefully, about frame rate improvements.

Be sure to post how it goes. Is it stable? Did it break any apps or functions? Should I make a CD backup before installing?

I love it when Software Update bounces and says there are new updates to the OS! It's like (insert denominational or non-denominational holiday of your choice here) ! I'll try AGP in a window (and most likely will crash hard) and report back :D

Here's my quick report. Window mode works with AGP! I didn't see much difference in top frame rates but they did seem much more consistent. In other words they didn't drop to nothing everytime I tried to turn around.

As far as the system, everything seems fine so far. Airport works, bluetooth works, Internet, email, etc, all working. At least for 15 min. now.

Ditto! I've been in world for about 15 min too, and things are going well, in a window no less! This will make scripting (and consequently visitng the Wiki every 10 sec) a lot easier (tho i figured out you can get to the desktop by hitting ` while the chat bar is closed, do you thing and just cancel the screen shot mode). Woohoo! LL, you can probably give us the check box back :-)! We'll keep playing to see if it blows up but seems solid so far.

Also, I seem to remember Robin Linden saying (or implying) that a new version of SL would take advantage of the new drivers in 10.3.5. So we may see more improvement with 1.4.10.

Buy a Nvidia card. ATI will always suck when playing SL. It's the easiest way.

Hank, it's not that easy with most Macs. The Powerbook line isn't upgradable as far as video cards are concerned, and neither is the iMac or eMac line (all three are very powerful computers, SL is the only program I've ever had problems running on my Aluminum 15";). Apple puts ATI's in almost everything, so that's why we have problems.

LL is obviously not interested in supporting ATI. I had to switch to Nvidia on the PC just to get away from the problems. It'd be easier for those that can switch to Nvidia, to do so. Unfortunately, that's just he way it is. :(

SL is rocking over here for me. I'm in a window, in AGP mode and it's working really well, 14-15 FPS in a large build im working on (and tons of snow particles from neighbors flowing in) ... no problems so far. I think LL was telling the truth when they said the drivers were hosed, not their program cuz the last OS update has worked wonders for me :)

Hey, it gives me an excuse to buy one of those new nVidias for my Powermac. How are the framerates since 10.3.5?

Mac Beta Thread

Here's the thread where Robin Linden talks about waiting on 10.3.5 before the Mac client becomes official (not beta).
