Ban Emerald Viewer for viloting TOS

I consider this a tech issue until I know more from LL. If I then need to contact other authority figures you will tell me. the viewer in question is Modular System's Greenlife Emerald Viewer.

My girlfriend started using this viewer, and she was showing me some of it's features. The viewer has a radar feature and when used with the camera can view things and people from far away, even in locked rooms. My girlfriend showed me how she could look up another girls dress to see her private areas.

This girl was across the sim she was on, in a closed room. She never knew my girlfriend was there looking up her dress.

The website for this viewer says 99 percent of the code is from Linden labs.. so they must be able to change enough code to make it do this, when the second life viewer cannot. I feel this is a major exploitation and misuse of the second life viewer code, and this behavior of people using this viewer to spy on others must break the TOS in some way.

If the TOS is being broken by a viewer with the ability to do such things can't it be banned from second life? Is it not in accordance with viewer policy use and abilities for second life?

this can be done as well with the standard viewer by disabling your camera constraints and increasing your draw distance. it's safe to assume it can be done with ALL viewers, so one would have to ban all viewers which would pretty much eliminate SL altogether...

this is a JOKE right? you can buy numerous scripted huds that track everyone on a sim, and like stated above, you can disable camera constraints in ANY LL issued viewer, and do the same thing. If you forgot your panties... well, yeah, sounds like YOUR problem.
What you FAIL to mention, is that that only looks as far as your draw distance is set, and that is MAX 512M. So if your seriously concerned about people peeking at you, go higher in the sky. They'd have to be a minimum of 512M away from you to peek....

And btw... Did she happen to check out the Emerald *look at* button? unlike the LL viewer, it has a NAME on it... so if someone IS looking at you, you know who it is.
(In case your so savvy you don't know what that is... its the little cross hairs that shows, by color, where your mouse pointer is pointed. Torley made a whole video on it!)

No this wasn't a joke. I simply didn't know you could do those things with other viewers. Nice people with morals don't bother looking into those kinds of things, for many of us it would never even cross our minds. I'm shocked. I posted this because I feel for all those people who get spied on and feel their privacy is violated. To me it is just a cartoon body so it's no big deal, but I do know of a lot of people who take being spied on seriously and it hurts them. I was looking out for them. If all viewers can do this with advanced settings then people need to know this upfront of joining SL and be aware that they cannot be secure at all, and take precautions.. like not stripping.. even in their own house.. sad to say really.

Brieanne your post seems like you are addressing the wrong person. You say " If you forgot your panties... well, yeah, sounds like YOUR problem."

I or my girlfriend was not the person being spied on.

And " So if your seriously concerned about people peeking at you, go higher in the sky. They'd have to be a minimum of 512M away from you to peek...."

I am not concerned about people spying on me, I am concerned about others being spied on. And it is not possible for those people to always be out of a spyers reach if every viewer can spy on people.

And" And btw... Did she happen to check out the Emerald *look at* button? unlike the LL viewer, it has a NAME on it... so if someone IS looking at you, you know who it is."

Who is this she you speak of? The girl my girlfriend was looking at? No one asked her anything. Who knows what viewer she was using or if her viewer has a 'look at' button or not. It's my girlfriend who was using the emerald viewer, no one was looking at her.

It seems you fail to understand the situation or to comprehend what I wrote initially. Please reread the whole message carefully so you will understand what is being said before you get all upset and post things that don't relate to the topic.

I read your entire post. I understood it. Frankly, you failed to see what MINE was saying.

the HER i referred to is your girl using the emerald viewer. There are a lot of very useful functions in it, that free up hud space.

To say *ban a viewer* that does what all viewers do based on your ignorance of SL is actually quite funny.

This is like saying.. I saw something bad, we should ban it. All versions of SL viewers run on the same base code, some are modified with enhancements that usually end up at patches for the main viewers (Nicholas fixed the prims up the ass bug with his patch from an alternate viewer,if i am not mistaken)

My entire point is calling for a witch hunt and a ban based on your failure to know the facts is a joke. If you had ASKED are there features here against the rules, or can someone explain this to me, you might have met with a much more range of responses.

Too bad you missed the days when the naked life viewer was around, anyone could get you naked on their screen and take pictures and you would never even know they did it.

SL is open source for a reason :)
Most alternate viewers fix bugs faster, perform better, and basically enhance the Sl experience.

Oh and Argent...

Please explain to me why looking up a cartoon skirt, at an artist's rendering, of a pixelated genitalia is immoral.
Then explain to me why anyone bothers doing this when they can simply put on a female avatar, get naked and just stare at themselves instead XD!

But seriously folks, the only visual privacy you are ever going to find is on an empty standalone sim that's set up with an access list. If you are ashamed of what you're doing, wearing or expressing, don't do it in the first place.

OP- while on the surface your post seems to imply caring for another's experience- do we really need yet more nannying? If everyone concerned themselves more about what they do and not what others do the entire world- even the real one - wd be so much bettr. Seems to me, your gf is ARable for TOS infringement by violating that other one's privacy- assuming the other new she was being looked at and perceived it as harrasment.

Be well, OP - breathe- life is what you make of it- your life that is- me, I will mind my own.

in this case, you may want to consider the question of your girlfriends morals. you seem to forget that SHE was the one going about looking up the skirt of someone, spying, etc. it seemed to have crossed her mind quite readily, though it's now doubtful she will be so careless as to share with you the things she may discover...

This type of misunderstanding is probably as common as the one that assumes financial transactions can somehow be safeguarded in SL.

You can pay LL quite a lot of money for a virtual space that you can control access to. Otherwise when you are in SL you are in public view. Sort of like anyone with access to the internet can read what I'm writing here.

Likewise the SL currency, Linden dollars, can be bought and sold for rl money. If I let someone have some of my L$ and then realize I was somehow swindled there is no law or other mechanism to reverse the transaction. I was swindled.

It's kind of a libertarian Utopia.

I find that caring too much about what would be decent or helpful for other people to do or think is less productive than focusing on how I myself would like to behave.

Yep, and a socialist paradise at the same time.

It's a world surfing the cusp of the singularity.

Oh my god...that was so funny I nearly wet my pants. Ban Greenlife Emerald Viewer? The major Anti-Griefing Viewer for SL? I think thats the funniest thing that I have heard anyone say all year. And, ontop of that, you wanted to ban it for functions that ALL viewers are capable of, including LLs own viewers. LOL!!
