I just got my EAH4870 in today and build in too.
With this card i also bought a Corsair TX750 watt.

aside from that i have a:

Intel Pentium 4 3GHZ
2 GB RAM memory
And i'm running on Windows XP Professional.

Before this update, which i paid quite some money for, i had a:
320Watt PCU and Geforce 8500GT

I bought this hoping that it would boost my FPS and i have been told that it should be, but i'm still running on a miserable 5FPS and the quality is even worse than before which shouldn't be.

Is there anyway i can fix this and get some decent FPS like i was hoping for?

Kind Regards,

Daymian Decosta

Also, i just completely refreshed my computer and i still have low FPS.
I'm quite dissapointed because i spend so much money so i can play Secondlife smoothly and now after getting my card to work, it's still the same as my old videocard, if not worse.

If anyone can give me some adivse,

please help.

Kind Regards,

Daymian Decosta

What version of SL?

What kind of internet service?

What kind of network connection - wired or wireless?

What motherboard?

If this is a modified standard brand and model of computer, what brand and model was it before the modifications?

Have you checked the issue tracker (jira) for your video card model HD4870?

How does your system do on standard benchmark tests?

Have you run a memory test?

What are your SL graphics settings at?

What kind of anti-malware are you running?

Are you doing anything like downloading 20 or 30 DVDs at one time with a bittorrent client or anything else that might be overtaxing the system?

What version of SL?

Standard one 1.20

What kind of internet service?
DSL [Which shouldn't really do anything with my FPS]

What kind of network connection - wired or wireless?

Directly connected to my Livebox

What motherboard?

http://www.asus.com/products.aspx?l1=3&l2=11&l3=179&model=465&modelmenu=1

If this is a modified standard brand and model of computer, what brand and model was it before the modifications?

The only thing i modified was the videocard.
Before this it was a:

Intel Pentium 4 3GHZ with 2GB RAM Memory and a Club3D Geforce 8500GT 512MB Videocard.

Have you checked the issue tracker (jira) for your video card model HD4870?
No, i have not.

How does your system do on standard benchmark tests?
I have above Recommend Settings according to the SL test.

Have you run a memory test?
No i have not.

What are your SL graphics settings at?
LOW/MED/HIGH [FPS doesn't really change that much between low and high, that's the weird thing

What kind of anti-malware are you running?
The only thing i'm running is AVG, and before i installed that, i had the same problem.

Are you doing anything like downloading 20 or 30 DVDs at one time with a bittorrent client or anything else that might be overtaxing the system?

Ofcourse not, i pretty much turn everything i can off, before i run Secondlife.

I have the same issue with Counterstrike Source and the old school Call Of Duty.

You might try the release candidate. I don't think it's likely to help, but it's free and as simple as can be to try, takes little time, and no brain labor, so it's worth a try.

From: someone
ASUS RADEON Xpress Motherboard. [Not sure what type, anyway i can check?]

One way to check would be to open the box and look on the motherboard.
Belarc.com has a program that will probably tell you.

You could try http://www.sisoftware.net/index.html?dir=dload&location=sware_dl_3264&langx=en&a= for Sandra Lite, I'm installing it now for either the first time or it's been so long I forgot, although I have heard of it many times before.
(time passes downloading and installing)
Sandra Lite looks like a good resource. I'm glad you inspired me to try it out.

From: someone

The only thing i modified was the videocard.
Before this it was a:

Intel Pentium 4 3GHZ with 2GB RAM Memory and a Club3D Geforce 8500GT 512MB Videocard.

"Intel Pentium 4 3 GHZ" refers to the processor, it's not a brand of computer. Gateway, Compaq, HP, and so on are brands of computer. I, for instance, have two computers, one is a Gateway brand and one is a Compaq. My Gateway is a model 9310S. I know this model number because there's a label on the side that says Gateway Model 9310S, added by the place I bought it refurbed from. The Compaq is a model S4500NX - it has the model made into the front of the case.

When people report problems with computers, they might say something like: "I have a Gateway S4500xn that gets really low FPS on Second Life". The problem might be described and the solution reported without ever mentioning the motherboard brand and model. Thus providing the brand and model of your computer, along with other identifying info, and using it as a search term when Googling yourself, might yield a result you can't find with just "Intel Pentium 4 3 Ghz". The amount of memory a computer has is not a brand and model of computer, it's the amount of memory the computer has. The type of video card it has is not a brand and model of computer.

If you buy a box, a power supply, a motherboard, a video card, etc. and put them together yourself, or buy a similarly built system made by someone else, then you don't have a brand and model of computer. You have a homebrew, a custom built. In that case, when you have a problem you want other to try to help solve, you should provide the brand and model of motherboard, for starters, since that determines so much about the system's abilities, limitations, requirements, etc.

From: someone
Have you checked the issue tracker (jira) for your video card model HD4870?
No, i have not.

Well, you might want to check the issue tracker, searching for such things, separately, as the brand and model of computer, the model of video card as you gave it, the model of video card as Osgeld gave it, etc.

From: someone
How does your system do on standard benchmark tests?
I have above Recommend Settings according to the SL test.

I'm thinking more of tests that measure the speed at which can draw polygons and such.
You might be able to find some results of tests for your video card done with test programs you can run yourself.

From: someone

LOW/MED/HIGH [FPS doesn't really change that much between low and high, that's the weird thing
Odd.

From: someone
What kind of anti-malware are you running?
The only thing i'm running is AVG, and before i installed that, i had the same problem.
It wouldn't hurt to run a complete scan, the one that checks everything and takes forever.
From: someone

I have the same issue with Counterstrike Source and the old school Call Of Duty.
Interesting. Have you looked to make sure the fans in your system are all spinning properly?

I edited my previous post with the exact motherboard i have.

Videocard.
http://www.specialtech.co.uk/spshop/customer/product.php?productid=6313&cat=901&page=1

Motherboard
http://www.asus.com/products.aspx?l1=3&l2=11&l3=179&model=465&modelmenu=1

PCU
Corsair 750Watt PCU

Processor
Intel Pentium 4 3.0GHz 800MHZ FSB

Yes my computer IS a homebrew, sorry for not stating that before.
So it doesn't have brand.
I also have a modified case so, if it once had a brand, which i highly doubt because my uncle, who i got this computer from makes custom computers all the time, it would be on that one. But again, it is homebrew.

I checked Jira, but there was no one with a problem like mine.
The only one simmiliar was the post about the new drivers crashing, which does happen for me if i mess with my settings too much.

I replayed the old Call of duty and i noticed that i got around 50 fps when i move away from the action, but as soon as i get involved i run in to 20 to 15, which is ridiculously bad for this card since it should be way higher, if i am not mistaking.

Same thing with Counterstrike Source, when it gets crowded i get 9FPS which is also impossible to play, and ofcourse really odd since my CLUB3D Nividia 8500GT got better fps, though it is a card 3x worse than the one i have now.

I'm really dissapointed, me and my father are competely clueless of what the problem could be.

I wouldn't need to scan my computer because i just re-installed XP on it, so i highly doubt Spyware or any virusses would be the problem.

Secondlife itself currently runs below 10fps, not much diffrent from my old card, like only 1 or 2 fps.
What i also noticed is that the outlines were really croppy.

[Edited]

What i also notice is when i go start or quit a game i get a black screen for a few seconds as if it's searching for the videocard, when you first install it and run XP.

What version is your video driver? Did it come with the card?

You could try using Catalyst to set all the options to "let program decide".

You might try
downloading the latest driver from ATI,
uninstalling your video drivers, Catalyst, etc. ,
running a driver cleaner,
then installing that latest driver from ATI?

An often mentioned driver cleaner is Driver Cleaner Pro from drivercleaner.net. I think there used to be a free version, but all I see now is one for ten dollars.

Another cleaner is Driver Sweeper, which is free, from Phyxion.net. I don't have any personal experience of that one at all. http://www.phyxion.net/docman/cat_view/4.html is download page there.

I installed the one that came with the CD but after that i updated it with the lastest driver around.
But i'm guessing i should completely erase everything and then install the new driver, correct?

No need to format the drive yet.

Any time you install a video driver you should uninstall the existing one first.

Some folks say you should also run a driver cleaner.

I have used Driver Cleaner Pro but it was free when I got it. It made me nervous letting it rampage through the registry deleting stuff but it worked fine.

Perhaps someone else could suggest some free driver cleaners other than Driver Sweeper.

Yeah, I'd give uninstall all the video drivers and run driver cleaner, then reinstall the latest driver from ATI a try.

There's also a hotfix for the ATI 4800 series available but it is for crash problems, not super low FPS.

A thing to search for on Google would be stuff like

hd4870 counterstrike "low fps"
or
ati 4870 "very low fps"
or
ati 4870 "slow as molasses" (that's no joke, I find useful stuff like that at times)

also like above but with the other game's name.

Also, I'd try to find a forum at ATI to describe your problem at, and at motherboard maker's site, and if there's a place to ask a question at Tom's Hardware and other such sites, I'd try that.

I'd copy the information you've provided here, paste it into notepad, and edit it into a concise complete description of the problem, with your system specs, and the note about slow fps in the other games, and save that in a notepad file, Then you can paste it into sites like one I suggested without having to retype or remember anything.

I'd also run dxdiag, which can generate a report file, or the Sandra system utility, which can also create a text report file, and generate system spec reports and save them. Any place you post at that allows attachments, you can post those reports.

Also file a Jira issue, making sure to make a good clear title and put it into the right place. SL's jira (issue tracker) does allow attachments so you would attach your system spec reports there.

Both of your video cards should be doing better than the 5-10fps you're getting. Since you've recently re-installed Windows, and both video cards are performing poorly, I'm wondering if the issue may be with the motherboard. Check with ASUS for BIOS updates.

What other cards do you have installed?

I have no other cards installed, just this one.
My dad doesn't want to update my ASUS BIOS though because he finds it too risky and it apparently takes really long.
I personally think it might be outdated.

My Gateway has a 3.3 Ghz "dual core" P4 with an ATI x800 256M video ram, and it does a good bit better than your system is doing in SL. Something is wrong somewhere.

Have you tried using the Catalyst program to set your settings to Performance?

I'd give ASUS tech support a call about that motherboard and video card. It may also need a driver or inf file for Windows XP to properly recognize the chipset.

It looks like it also has integrated video on the motherboard. Is there something special you need to do to disable it? Usually that's automatic when you install another video card, but I don't know about that one.

Well *sigh*

just uninstalled every video driver i had, and re-installed 8.5 update for my Videocard and i still got the fps problem, with every game...

I'm really really really dissapointed and i just feel like i wasted 300USD's for a card that has performence which makes my older card look like a pretty good one.

Gah.

I might give asus a call tomorrow..

If you people have any ideas, keep them coming.

Thanks for the help.

Im gonna try Vista now, see if it works.

If you can exchange the card, for a different kind or a different one of the same kind, you might keep that in mind.

this is simple

ASUS doesnt make crap as far as video cards go, they buy the chips from ati, then they buy the referance boards from ati and simply assemble them

i have a PNY Vetro VTGX sitting around
or a leadtech winfasst

does that mean anything to you?

not to me either, its a geforce 2 gts no matter what marketing diptard thought Vetro VTGX was a cool name, or winfasst somehow repersented a geforce 256-DDR

you have a ATI radeon HD4870, no matter what logo the board has silkscreened on it, calling it what it is makes life alot easier, and save us trips to google trying to figure out what a XFX PVT94PZHFU is (its a geforce 9600)
