You can't connect. If the ports arent' opened properly, that will keep you from connecting. If you don't know of a better way to use your diagnostic time, then you check the router's ports to see if they are set as needed for SL.

You could have a problem with your network card or onboard ethernet port. You might try removing the network adapter from device manager and rebooting SL so that it reinstalls the driver. Always a good idea to find a driver at the manufacturer's site and download it before doing that, in case Windows decides it's can't find one.

You could try reverting the network driver. I had a problem with a network driver lately. I'd let Windows Update install a new driver. I don't remember what it did wrong, but reverting to the many years old driver that came with my computer fixed it.

If you can take your computer to someone else's house and see if it works there, or borrow someone else's router, that can give you information about where the problem lies.

If you give more specific answers to questions, that can help people figure out the problem. For example, what is the make and model of your router? If you report that, someone that has the same one might know something about it. What version of Second Life? "the Second Life version" is not a complete answer to that question. Exactly what version number?

It's been suggested that you try different versions of SL. Have you done that? There's the regular version and the release candidate version to connect to the main grid on the SL download page, plus there's a beta grid version to try.
