Ok well this is my 4th day playing SL and whenever i start it up on my desktop, i would get this error message:

"Unable to start networking, Error 4." and then it would just close, then would open up a tiny window which says: "Sending to alternate server, try 1..."

i have no idea what i did and i tried everything i could from restarting the computer to reinstalling the game. I even checked the files in my SecondLife directory in my laptop (because it works there but very badly) and the files in my desktop to see if they match and they do, but it just still wont start... Can i get some help here please? Thanks :)

also i have just finished deleting my cache and still nothing.. is my internet the problem? i mean its always been working until now..

Is that a windows message or an SL message? I've never seen it nor heard of that message.

Okay..........so it appears to be an SL message. Try resetting your modem and router if you have one. Also check your firewall......it could be blocking access to LL's servers.

i cant get into my router right now though but i checked my firewall and its logged as allowed traffic. but i think i know what caused this to happen. could it be because i left my desktop's SL online and then i tried logging onto that same account on my laptop which connected and worked correctly, but when i try to log back in on my desktop, it just says that message again and refuses to log in

I could be...........your avatar may be what we call "ghosted". LL's servers still show you as logged in when you are actually not. But the message is not the same as what you reported.........so that is just a guess

Let me log in and see if I get the "user not online" message when I IM you. That sometimes forces the servers to actually log you out so you can log in again.

I'll post back after I try that.

You might try deleting your settings.xml file, which I think isn't deleted by an uninstall.

That would be C:\Documents and Settings\%username%\Application Data\SecondLife\user_settings\settings.xml for a normal installation on Windows XP of the regular SL client.

To find that file you might need to set Windows Explorer to show hidden and system files.

I had that message a few days or so ago. I don't remember what version produced it.

I'm not sure, but I think maybe going into SL's preferences from the log in screen and doing Web Browser Cach Clear Now might be what fixed the problem.

So much stuff goes wrong with SL it's hard to keep track of all of it.

Do another uninstall, then delete the entire C:\Documents and Settings\%username%\Application Data\SecondLife folder, or rename it if you want to keep anything that might be there to look at later. Check the program files folder to make sure the Second Life program folder is gone. Then redownload the installation file. Then do an reinstall.

Alternately, try downloading a different version. If you were using the regular client, try the Release Candidate, and vice versa.

Also, might as well provide system specs. Type of processor, version of operating system, amount of ram, type of video card or onboard video, amount of video ram, type of router, wired or wireless, type of internet connection, etc.

And what happened when you ran the program? Did it do anything, give an error message, or what?

Ok ive tried sending a ticket to a secondlife technician to solve my problem and all they told me to do was to go into the %temp% folder and delete evrything in it, then go to the %appdata% folder and deleting the cache then trying to start it up but that still solved nothing.

Here are my system specs:

>NVIDIA GeForce 8600 GT
>Intel Core 2 Duo CPU
>E4400 @ 2GHz w/ 1GB RAM
>Wireless Broadband internet connection (well i think its broadband)

So if anyone here knows what to do, please fill me in. Or else ill be stuck playing on my laptop which has horrible specs: even at very low quality it still plays at around 1fps.
Thank you for your time.

You got broadband okay!!! About twice as fast as most cable internet connections. :) Mine is only about 8000 kbps.

But that narrows the problem down to somthing in your system, your viewer, or your local area network (LAN). You told me you are networked wirelessly.........there is a good chance that is at least part of your problem. Also, I know you have your laptop and your desktop networked through a router.......how many other computers use that router?

Your system should run SL very well with the specs you listed. I don't think it's the source of your problem. It's something in your network.......are you the administrater of the network or have administrative rights? It's really looking like your computer has been blocked by your network from connectiong to SL.

edit to say...........
I need to go do some RL errands. Be back in a couple hours. :)

Can you try connecting it wired instead of wireless?

What firewall, anti-malware, and anti-virus software are you using?

Have you opened the ports needed by Second Life?

From: someone
Hardware firewalls need to allow access on certain network ports. Second Life needs to connect to ports 443/TCP, 12035/UDP, 12036/UDP, 12043/TCP, and 13000-13050/UDP. You should configure your firewall to allow outbound traffic on those ports, and related inbound traffic. You'll need to consult your firewall's documentation, or the manufacturer's website, for instructions on how to make these changes to your firewall. As of Version 1.13.2, released Jan. 10th, 2007, you need to enable UDP/TCP in order to access Second Life.

You go to your router's control page. Sometimes it's at 192.168.2.1, but it can vary. You can find it in your router's documentation, at the router site, or by putting your router make and model info into Google.

Have you tried more than one version of Second Life? What version are you using?

The SL Client version. i even tried system restore to when i first started playing SL but that didnt help either... seriously this is peeing me off ive never had so much problems. and yeah this is how to go to your router page:

1. This is the tricky part, first off what you need to do is login to your router. I am not sure if this way works with all routers but it should. Go to Start -> Run and type cmd. After command prompt has started up, type ipconfig. It should list your ip address, subnet mask, and default gateway. Write down your ip address and default gateway. Type exit.
2. Now go into Firefox (if you dont have Firefox, get it!!! It is 100 times better than IE) type in your Default Gateway in your address bar/url bar or whatever you want to call it.

copied that from a WoW private server setup page ;p gotta love it

To your router manufacturer's web site, or do a web search for a manual for your router.

Also try portforward.com. You aren't exactly wanting to forward ports but they do have info of sorts on a lot of routers.
