SOOOO.... copybot has rendered content unimportant.....
Currently and upcoming in SLs future, there will be a major shift. The event makers, the musicians, and the DJs are going to be the ones in charge. It's now going to be about live performance!!!!
linden$ are practically useless now..... EXCEPT FOR DONATIONS AND TIPS!!
Dont get me wrong, I am sooo anti-copybot. I hate it hate it hate it... it basically destroyed secondlife. .... BUT.... live events are going to continue onward... now that there's no reason to build or create content, and no reason to save up money, the only thing people are going to do inworld is check out the shows. They're either not going to be inworld, or the people inworld are comin to the events! Every pissed off avatar is going to want to find some release, find some inworld destressers.
Musicians, DJs, performers, put on your best shows! Keep kickin the tunes for the community. And remind people there's still something they can spend their linden$ on, which is to show love and support to the live performers.
thoughts?

my thoughts? Pull your head out of your fourth point of contact. textures aren;t valueless. Did you bother to even do any research on copybot? Yes please hold your live shows. No tips for you.

WHOO BUBBA! We are all in this together and NO ONE will rise and shine if we don't take care of each other.... POINT IN CASE: How do I pay 2000 to 3000 lindens a performance for that awesome LIVE musician or 1000L to that HOT DJ if I can't get a merchant to rent a hut so they can sell a design to a fan of live music who had come to my place for a LIVE event...need I repeat the circle for you again? Or should I mention that the fan of live music worked at a place where these awesome musicians and DJs USE to perform but had to close because there were no merchants, to rent the huts, to sell the.... We really are our brother's keeper, even in SL!

Sooo sorry... I did sound very pompus when posting that... completely didnt intend that.... basically i was up late that night and the copybot was pissin me off..... at the time i was pissed off and basically thinking that because of the copybot, the object, item, selling things world was completely erradicated... I was thinkin that was the end of secondlife, and the economy... I was thinkin what else is there to do now in SL with your money? So , sorry, didn't mean to sound like an ass... I jumped to conclusions with the copybot fiasco.... and also, I didn't mean, spend your money on the shows... I was trying to say go out and see the shows... if you don't wanna tip, dont.... but the live music and DJs are there for ya )

I don't know too many DJs that pay royalties, most don't even own the music they play and requests seem to work by queing an mp3 up for download.
A DJ playing unlicensed songs for tips is really no different than someone using copybot to steal and resell.
I know that the proper fees are on such a scale that tips would never make up for them, and it doesn't make me enjoy live DJ shows any less, but that still doesn't make it right.

I'm only speaking for myself, but I don't play mp3s, I DJ live in a mix with external equipment, I don't take requests. I am a RL DJ so I have the proper liscenses to play in a RL venue. ....but most of the SL DJs aren't like me, they're playlisting and taking requests... .... in relation to what you're saying: To stream music online non-24-7 for less than 50 people doesn't fall onto any liscense anyway. If the dj has purchased the music they are playing, playing for 50 people or less, and making at most $10USD, that is legitimate. I do see the point you are trying to make, but DJs DJing in SL are under proper guidelines. Also, when a copybot copies, the user becomes the creator of the object..... The djs in SL aren't saying "this next tune is one i made, and the following one is also one i made, and the one after that is one I made."

I think the future is very bright where live performances are concerned in SL. Ever heard of digital DJ licence? Who needs fancy stuff!! Its all about the music.

From: CJM Dodonpa I think the future is very bright where live performances are concerned in SL. Ever heard of digital DJ licence? Who needs fancy stuff!! Its all about the music. Yes. this was my intent of this post in the first place.... music & performance in SL has a very bright future. As for a digital DJ liscence. It's still a grey area and contract..... generally it pertains to "internet radio broadcasts" "promotion & marketing" and "public stations" but it doesn't really give any specific definitions to what this means. My take on it is that giving a copy of an mp3 file is not legal and doing a big public broadcast with music needs a liscence.... but playing some tunes for fun in SL amongst friends that never can really reach more than 50 listeners and is never really at cd quality is all good and legit. From what I hear now some rentable server stream now even come with the liscence included. ..... if anything IS in fact illegal... the RIAA has plently of places to start cracking down before they even consider SL. ALSO, regarding needing any sort of music liscence, the music liscence company would contact you if you need one long before the RIAA is involved.

What you're saying might be true for a RL party, but streaming music online definitely requires you to pay license fees, whether you're making money of it or not.

What you're saying might be true for a RL party, but streaming music online definitely requires you to pay license fees, whether you're making money of it or not. I'm sorry to say I can't show you written proof or a link. I've had this info voiced to me over the phone by BMI when I was asking them a lot of questions. Basically, the music liscence companies come to you and tell you that what you're doing with music needs a liscence. Whether it's a club, a bar, radio, streaming, or whatever. For everything public other than streaming, the liscence companies find out almost immediately and tell the venue it needs a liscence. But for streaming, many streams are considered private if there's not many people listening. They told me that it's too much of a bother to try to get every joe schmoe streamer to pay for liscences. So, basically, they told me that if they come across streams with less than 50 listeners & no reoccurring show times they just don't even bother. Thats why, for example, shoutcast has lists of thousands of joe-schmoe streams along with their liscenced bigtime streams. the liscence companies scour sites like those for the big shows without liscences.... Now, I really do not know what "50 listeners" means... is it at once? is it just unique listeners over a span of time? i dunno... but I can tell that they're not even taking into account the streams that are not 24/7, and only have a handful of listeners. I'd like to find you this in writing on the net... I'd like to find it for myself in fact... but yeah, basically, that is what BMI has told me.

Doubledown is mostly correct. Most of the companies don't go after the small time shmoe. However, even the small time shmoe doing irregular shows are doing it illegal if they are not paying royalties. They are just not going after them.

What I am saying is that is not the case with this.... I understand the concept that because they're not going after small-timers it's still illegal... but with small time stream and irregular shows it is still considered private use... the private use liscence for a song is purchased when you buy the song... I will have to get the exact specifics which say when streaming music is private use, and when it becomes public use.

Ok, I stand corrected. Reading more into it.....
for it to be considered private streaming you must have a password to access the stream...
... so you all are correct, and i was mistaken....
HOWEVER.... streaming music is legal when it is education purposes... Anyone could consider that streaming DJs are teaching people about the music they love....
.... well, all in all, its a total grey area which needs to be defined and established more.... but me personally, I have the public licences to play all my music anywhere (because of my RL profession) ..... however, I also disagree with music licences and the licence companies in so many ways.

From: Doubledown Tandino I also disagree with music licences and the licence companies in so many ways. I think we can all agree on that . The silliest example was that if you operate a stream, and even if you're the only one that ever listens to it, you owe $100 just for operating it . There seem to be some hosts that let you ride in under their own license though, not sure if it's that a decent alternative, or just a shady set-up. It still doesn't cover interactive DJ'ing though (taking requests, or announcing upcoming songs).

Seriously?? was copy bot really an issue? It was nothing more than a lot of hype. This was the SL millineum bug. "Oh, the sky is falling" "Oh copy bot will steal all my crap" Other than cause mass panic what are the linden statistics on the effect this had? To my understanding it did NOT affect economy one bit and in fact sl residency has doubled...
what it did do is cause mass panic and cause everyone to turn scripts off on thier property and install those annoying "anti-copybot" spammers everywhere.
You cant fly or boat with a vehicle anywhere these days and try getting a hug from someone or using any other script based functions. Can't do it. Copy bot didnt do this, the fear driven residents did.
really people....

Stealing wites

Funny how the kettle can call the kettle black. I mean come on people 90% of the textures are taken from web source is that not stealing. Then you say well I am stealing stealing but you are if you play music. I mean come on now get grip. Even houses and buildings come from real life so even those ideas are stolen. So where does it all end ? That is my question. And I agree the copy bot thing was just a big hyped up thing.

Copybot will be always here, No matter how many times we report it or scream to the Lindens about it, the only thing we can do is watch out stores and ignore it.

The only people who care about copybots are the ones that make a pair of jeans, that are copied from a freebie, make them a different color, then charge 400L for each color variant.

From: Tormented Twilight The only people who care about copybots are the ones that make a pair of jeans, that are copied from a freebie, make them a different color, then charge 400L for each color variant. Whereas the people who spend a week (or more) making something from scratch, either in PS or building/scripting in SL, couldn't give a damn? Sorry, I'm not actually on the 'the sky is falling!' team - I think it was mostly horrible, horrible hype - though I freely admit I'd change that opinion in a flash if anything bad happened to me and my products as a result. Of course, anyone would - but I combine that with not having heard a single complaint of it actually happening. I'm prepared to be corrected. But my argument here is - 'I'm sorry, what the hell are you talking about??' People who are inclined to be concerned about these sorts of things are gonna get upset - but you boil it down to people who "make a pair of jeans [...] make them a different color (etc)". I am fully of the opinion that people panicked and made so much more of this than it was, but your attitude? No, sorry. I'm not concerned because I don't think it's going to break me, but I'm also happy enough to be corrected if someone does arrive at my place tomorrow and rip off all my items and start distributing them. You assuming the only people who are going to be bothered by this are those who are doing something wrong already - that's just uncalled for and totally nonsensical.

There's this one place with like movie posters and hotties you can find off Google, and he's selling them for like $200 Lindens each and this guy there was all WTF!? So I took a screenshot of one, payed the $L10 upload cost and now we both have it. Two for $10 baby yeah! Yeah so this 'Copybot' thing, it's a load of huey. And that free music thing? If you don't own the media piece, or have permission from ones able to give it, handing out copies of any kind is illegal. Don't believe me? Read the warning screen the next time you watch a movie. The thing is there's so much going on, it's impossible to police. Technically taping tunes from the radio, shows from TV and that commercial where the guy's birthday present is an iPod filled with tunes 'donated' by others is all piracy but it's unstoppable. I have to pay a 20 cent levvy fee for each CD-R I buy because the government (Or whoever the F) believes that piracy is the only thing they will be used for. Of course they're right but how dare they simply ASSUME that of everyone! - Jolan
