and directed to the classifieds instead...

I added this new warning to the Events Posting Rules:

'Advertisements for commercial products or services will be deleted from the events calendar. Repeated misuse of the event posting system for this purpose may lead to disciplinary action.'

No........ hesitation in supporting this entirely!

That's great..... but..... will you actually follow it through? I'd love to see a "Report bad event" button on each entry in the Events calendar so someone can check it and pull it if i'ts one of the "non events".

I ran one of my tours this evening, having advertised it on the calendar. 4 people came, which wasn't bad considering.

Just look at a RL newspaper...yard sales, garage sales, and flea markets are all under classifieds. Events are on the community events calendar. I like knowing exactly where to look for whatever I want.

Put Yard Sales and the like in classifieds. But maybe make them free if a certain number of words.

A yard sale is not an event in my opinion and should be deemed as a 'temporary store'.

I enjoy going to yard sales, and they are easy to find on the Events Calendar. Would they be easy to find on Classifieds? (I assume by putting in the words "yard sale" in search or something.)

maybe it will also stop ppl from posting fake yard sales or having freebie items for sale there, I love going to yard sales but it really annoys me that ppl are that low!
btw, when does this start? so I know when to start looking in the classifieds

Sounds good to me! I enjoy yard sales, but they just don't fit in as an "event".

If you put this in, you Must must must must enforce it 100%

The enforcement of the event listing has been extremely lax lately.

You Go Jesse! No More Yard-Sales on the Event list!

Yeah... yard sales are definitely not events. Rarely are they ever actually "yard sales" at all. But even if there where... what in the world is the point of a yard sale in SL?! The only thing you could possibly do is sell a couple of your no-copy transferrable items (if they're copy and transfer, and you didn't make it, you really shouldn't be selling them in the first place. If you did make it, then it's not a -yard- sale, it's a Sale, which belongs in classifieds.)

What about charity fundraiser type sales (not necessarily of the yard)? Certainly these fall under yard sales but if they're legitimate one time events, I think an exception should be made for these. Of course, I am shedding no tears if they are also banished to the classifieds.

Also, where does the line get drawn on auctions? They are also commercial ventures but definitely a step up in class from yard sales.

Not being selfish here as I love the fact that discussions (both the ones I moderate and the ones I love to attend) will now not be stuck in with a bunch of garbage. :) Just asking a question on where the line for "yard sale" is drawn.

Yes, yardsale ads are traditionally free.

That would be a very good start. Along with any other type of sale, like "50% skins" and just plain blatant "50L per 10Min Money Chair + Casino!" ads.

Heh. I love the manufacture-cost model of SL.

I'd propose that the definition for an "Event" would be a designated time and place at which the CALLER of the event is actually present.

(If they're not there, they're abusing the concept.)

So a "Yard Sale" could be an "event" if the seller is there to chat, sell, barter...
I think there ought to be a requirement of a "yard" as well but maybe that's too technical :).

That's the whole point, isn't it? There's a TON of stuff in my inventory that I don't use anymore, is no-copy, and I paid lindens for it. A yard sale is to recoup that money by selling it to someone who wants it (and usually giving them a nice deal!), so you can buy more stuff that you DO want.

... I guess that was kinda simplistic, but I'm not sure a more involved explaination is really needed.

A yard sale is an event... And as long as they're not selling new stuff, or selling things for more than they bought them for, they can't possibly be seen as "profitable" !!

They are actually losing money in a proper yard sale. This is not "commercial."

It is definitely an event. And a great way to get rid of stuff clogging up your inventory or get new stuff at a great deal, I might add.

Proper yard sales are in NO WAY violating the new rules.

I respectfully disagree, Smith - but maybe I'm just getting all semantical :D

I think if you wanted to accomplish what you wanted above, you could post an "Inventory Cleaning Party", that was lead by a host - and was a group activity.

The problem with Yard Sales is that while there may be some that are just like what you explained, there are plenty others that are nothing more than a hunk of items and a sign. The latter is by no means what I would consider a social activity.

The old rule used to be that a host had to be present for something to be an "event." I think that was a good rule.

Dumb question time! YAY leave it to me HAHAHAAH

What the heck is an SL yard sale or garage sale? Boxing up transferable outfits or items that you purchased and dont want anymore and re-selling them? Wouldnt that be considered the selling of other peoples products? Is that considered ok? Just curious cause Im a bit confused.

A Yard Sale IS an Event
01-27-2006 11:38
I agree with Smith. It Is an event. We had ours on a Private Island. As people shopped for discounted items, the money ball was dropping them lindens. Lots came and hung out and chatted. And we did make back a few bucks. We were present the enitre duration.
