From: Carbon Breed 'Problems' like this, in which club owners wish to alleviate are as simple as building a 1-8 prim floor with tiles. Add a script that cycles colors with local lights, and slap a texture on it. Bam, disco is back - no alpha required.
Srsly. Why hasn't this been done yet? It has. Drop by Disco Inferno at Rosieri 24,154 and check it out. It's actually rotating textures, but not with an alpha channel. Perhaps not the busiest or most technologically advanced club in SL... but then again things weren't in the seventies were they? Lewis

From: someone You could changeyour shoes instead of asking club owners to change their club because of your fashion choice. Not well said. There are more of us vain women in our Jimmy Hoffa concrete block high heels than there are club owners. So who should conform to whom?

Don't visit the club, they don't have to change the way they set up their club. It was very well said. The world doesn't cater to your fashion choice. Now I'm tempted to make sure an alpha platform is always under my feet, just to make your shoes look bad. Its THEIR club. Don't like it? leave and shut your whining mouth. Maybe someone should be the one to point out to vain and spoiled people that the world, virtual or not, does not revolve around you and your choices.

From: Lillie Guildenstern Is this the reason my flexi-prim skirts disappear on some floor surfaces? !!! Lillie! What curse by what god cast you down into *these* forums!? *stunned* Re: your disappearing skirts - yeah, alpha prims. Highly, highly plausible explanation and I personally can think of no other.

Lewis Perhaps I will stop by some time. I might be one of the fuzzy ones, but I'm one to favor the oldschool. Oh, and, trust me. I've seen an entire sim remodel three times just to try and get the club portion a better influx of avatars. What surprises me, though, is that the first iteration, being the less technically advanced of the bunch, brought in the most traffic, (so much so that it would hit the Popular Places tab rather often). The point is - you don't have to have the absolute best, and most up-to-date environment for avatars to have fun in. Sure, having one that can cater to more types of avatars than just one is nice, but not required. Atmosphere is everything. If you're there to have fun, and you do have fun, you'll think less about it all those minor technicalities and show up more often - it's a simple as that.

From: Jonas Pierterson And my point is just as valid, Palomma. There is no requirement to wear shoes with invisiprims. It is a fashion choice.
Don't like the effect the floor has? don't go. But NEVER tell others to change based on YOUR fashion choices. Quit whining. *cough*

Jonas has a good point. People these days think that because they want something, they should get it.
Overall, if you don't like something, don't use it. It's a very simple concept that allows everyone to have fun equally. There are clubs that don't have Alpha floors on them. There are clubs who serve pies and listen to Jazz music instead. Would you go to a club that has nothing but Phil Collins playing on the radio, and then instead of just leaving, you complain endlessly about it? Nooo. You just don't go. In real life, if you go to a bar, and they don't have your favorite beer, you don't sit and drink whatever crap they do have and whine at the bartender that they don't have it, and then proceed to go back again and again and again. I mean unless you want a broken nose. :-/

Instead of just not bothering to come anymore and leave the owner clueless about possible reasons o.O; Depends on the business owner and the tone you take when making the explanation. I would always want to know why, as long as the person telling me why wasn't telling me 'you should do this' but took the respectful tone of 'this is why I won't be visiting your nightclub'... or in my case (previously), 'this is why I won't be buying your Spirit Floors'. Obviously, if I ever resurrect them, I will have to consider whether or not to market them as dancefloors... Thing is, folks *liked* them and prim shoes not withstanding, I still use one in my own home. Some things you just sort of get used to as you go along. Char

So now we see the ugly agenda behind this pseudo-libertarian BS - a spiteful urge to sabotage other people's appearance and silence them when they object. The floors don't just sit there and look garish, they actively interfere with other people and cause their clothes to malfunction. That's a non-consensual invasion of an individual's personal space, which the night club owner has no right to trespass. Walking into a club which is open to the public does not give the owner the right to alter my appearance. That requires informed consent and until these clubs obtain it from every one of their customers, they should cease and desist.

By the rules of the mathematics that are involved in layered alpha-blended stuff, the "appearance" is perfectly fine. It's appearing just fine. The floors are not altering anything you're wearing, on the contrary, what you're wearing is defective and does not stay properly invisible on these types of floors. They are not altering how you look. They send no message or alter any property of the prims you are using. Otherwise by that token, if anyone has a colored light source, then they are also "altering" the way you look. And you should bitch at Linden Labs too, because the time of day lighting "alters" your appearance too. Oh and don't forget clouds! Did you know that your shoes also lose their proper rending when in a cloud? I really hope you weren't being serious when you posted this.

We don't go to night clubs to theorize about the mathematics of 3D meshes; we go there to dance and show off our outfits. If the floors' alpha-blending disrupts our appearance in an undesireable and unrealistic manner, (which it obviously does, in spite of your obtuse denials) it's breaking the simulation, regardless of how perfectly it adheres to the "rules of mathematics". And if you're going to insist it's the shoes that are broken, then please enlighten us with your extensive knowledge of 3D graphics meshing on how to properly design a pair of spike heels.

Easy. In concern to your closing paragraph - Design in a method not involving any design aspect SL offers. Wow, right out of left field. SL isn't perfect. Then again, neither is any other social hub. I say social hub, because in the end, that's all SL is. It isn't technical enough to be a 'simulation' as you call it. It is only technical enough for you to complain about it's technicalities. Mathematics, you say? It's freaking Legos that you can stretch and squish and stick together, and woo - some you can even make transparent. It doesn't take rocket science. Also - OH MY GOD. MY TEXT TOTALLY CLASHES WITH THIS FORUM DESIGN. I WILL NOT HAVE IT. OH, THE HORRIBLE, UNYIELDING HUMANITY. I DEMAND CHANGE. DON'T TRY AND SWAY ME WITH YOUR FANCY FORUM TEXT-FORMATTING TALK. MAKE IT HOW I WANT AND DO IT NOW. See how retarded that sounds? Can't we all just get along, work together as a community, and find a middle ground? Please?

Can't we all just get along, work together as a community, and find a middle ground? So long as you persist in childish attempts at mockery, there's not much likelihood we'll "get along". Why don't you go back to playing with your Legos, if that's all you think this amounts to?

From: Lish Lach So long as you persist in childish attempts at mockery, there's not much likelihood we'll "get along". Why don't you go back to playing with your Legos, if that's all you think this amounts to? Surely one of your intelligence would understand the definition of 'comparison'? I'm sure you're also no stranger to our friend 'sarcasm'. We'll try this again. You walk into a club. Let's just say, for the benefit of the doubt, that this happens to be a club in the real world - since this is a debate intermittently based on the same concepts. For whatever reason, you're wearing a pair of those rediculous Reebok shoes that have blinking lights in the heels. The club you're in is a disco club with a flashing floor. Now, in your unfounded, (or founded, as you see it), disagreement of the situation, you demand to the club owner that they redesign the club to suit your need. Unless you're exceedingly rich, or you are exceedingly important, you aren't going to get far. This leaves you two options. Leave, or stay and deal with it. Completely your choice - just as much as it was the club owner's choice to build his/her club in the way he/she did. Now, instead of trying to argue with me based on your specific viewpoint as compared to a more general viewpoint - you could go out and suggest newer club builders work a method of coming to a middle ground when designing new clubs to attract a wider range of customers. I've already mentioned, and seen a support of such a design mentioned by another in this very thread. Honestly, I could go tit for tat with you all day. But that would indeed make me childish, much like my retorts are being accused of. But, I will not - therefore, I am not childish. However, you need to grow up and stop making accusations as such when someone disagrees with you. You'll find life so much easier to live. Who knows - you might even find a club that works with your shoes.

From: Jonas Pierterson Or... You could changeyour shoes instead of asking club owners to change their club because of your fashion choice. But while we are on topic. Why don't you change your shirt and skirt? It totally makes my outfit look like crap because your colors clash with mine. Hey if you expect others to change things because of what you wear, give others the same respect. Now put on blue, it goes with my suit. I don't think they'll miss you if you decide not to come back. She asked nice and you are being childish and rude. You dont have to change a thing.. but people like me, will go to places where adults own and run the establishment and want to have customers.

From: Lish Lach YOU don't get to dress up MY doll in YOUR Reeboks. Both you and the club owner should just stop screwing around with my shoes. Oh, but I do! Don't you toy with my hypothetical situation. :3 From: Lish Lach Those are your Reeboks and your straw man argument. I choose what my shoes should look like, not you, and would the club owners please stop mucking them up? Thanks for pointing out the Reebok thing, (that, once again, existed in a purely hypothetical situation, I might add - relevence only before you edited your post). Knew something was out of place with that one. Sometimes words go down and no matter how many times you look at it it spelling just doesn't seem right. Anyway - point taken. Nobody is going to make you change. My arguement is simply that nobody else has to change because of you. Hardly straw man.

Actually, it's not always appearing just fine. Aside from the problem with shoes that Govindira mentioned (which is a technical limitation of the invisiprim hack that is used to make high-heel shoes), I have also seen strange things happen to partially transparent gowns when worn in a place with a floor with transparency -- their appearance changes in unpredictable ways as you change camera angle. It's the well-known alpha sorting problem, which plagues SL as well as many other 3D environments. And the fact that it appears in so many environments is evidence that it's a difficult problem to solve. I think Govindira's main point was valid. Alpha textures on dance floors makes a lot of clothing look bad, and so it would be a good idea for club designers to avoid them. Yes, the floors can look very cool in isolation, but if they make the dancers look bad, it's a poor tradeoff; there are other ways to make a club look good.
