Worse than event postings all in caps, is when you have event hosts who insist on using caps for everything during the event. It makes me wonder where we find them sometimes, honestly.

Agreed, STOP them all.
I myself use a voice repeater, which simply turns my text into light blue and allows the event participants to distinguish what the host says. Works better IMHO. ![]() _____________________

Yes, I despise both Event Listings in all caps, and annoying people who speak in all caps. The only event I've been to in the last few MONTHS happened to have someone speaking in all caps at it. I literally left the event solely because of that.

There are legit reasons for a host to use caps durring an event, usualy for the purposes of "shouting out above the crowd", in a figurative sense. Particularly quizzes and such, when you have people givving responses to the questions at a very rapid rate; people look for the capital letters to more easily catch responses and instructions from the host.

It doesn't work Elle. Proper case is a lot easier and faster to read than all caps, which is seen as chilldish and AOL-Like. Zoe has a better idea which is to use a repeater to change the colour of your chat text. In quizes, just ask for no chatter. I tried that once. Told people I had to take their first answer, which was something like "Hi <name>, LOL!!!", which was wrong. People got the message after that, and shut up... _____________________

So Sorry
01-21-2005 04:53
Im so sorry, I have been guilty of using all caps in my class.
I have a wireless Mic that i use in order for some of the students to hear me beyond 20 meters. And it was made to repeat and shout in all CAPS. I will talk to creater and see if she can fix. |

Nothing wrong with Caps lock by a host during an event
01-21-2005 07:46
I've been at crowded events where the people attending *ask* the host to use caps lock, so that they don't miss the important stuff the host has to say. This thread started with a mild rant against Event postings using all-caps...., and that, to me is also not a problem. You want to make your event painful to read? -- that's up to you....
In my view, there is nothing wrong with a host using all caps to differentiate her chat from that of participants.... However, I understand that this is one burning issue about which there can be legitimate differences of opinion.... to each his or her own ........ -Jeri |

OOO I want one!!!
01-24-2005 11:29
*grins sheepishly as a guilty caps locker at events* But, in my defense, the sceners DO need to know when they are near the end of their scenes so they can prepare to wrap up and to distinguish my voice from the others, i.e. ((3 MINUTE WARNING)). I need a loudspeaker, but did a search for loudspeaker, dj equipment, etc, to no avail (couldn't find a shop that sells one). Can you please tell me who makes yours Zoe?

Odd, SL must be running great if this is the best thing we can find to attack. This is nonsense. The fact that there are other (maybe smaller, or larger) problems doesn't invalidate smaller problems, that ALSO need to be solved. BTW, I just reread my original posting, which.. may have been written when I was a bit tired lol ![]() I meant stop CAPS as stop caps in the event descriptions (I mean, when I do a search for events, some people like to EMPHASIZE THAT THEIR EVENT IS BETTER because IT'S NAME AND DESCRIPTION IS WRITTEN IN ALL CAPS.) Yeah, maybe add some ***** and !!!!!! and $$$$$$-s, just because THAT'S what makes events 'better', not content. Gosh. |

Agreed, using Caps Lock in conversation violates an unwritten social rule of chat/conversation.
But the event calendar isn't a conversation. It is a notice. Notices adhere to a different guideline than casual conversation, IMO. For the record, if *everyone* adhered to the same guideline (meaning no one used Caps Lock in their event subject), I wouldn't feel compelled myself do do it. However.... Allow me to share a second-life example: Event Posted for 7pm: ******************************* Game Show: Payment Podium ******************************* (Event in progress) John Q. Customer: What's going on here? Travis Lambert: Hi, John - Its our game show, Payment Podium. John Q. Customer: Neat. I wish you would have posted it to the calendar tho. Travis Lambert: I did, John. John Q. Customer: Hrm.... Its not there. I just looked. Travis Lambert: Look again, John. John Q. Customer: Oh- I must have missed it the first time. Maybe you should have posted it in Caps? Grrr..... (Yes, this conversation actually happened.) Will I start using Caps Lock for Payment Podium? Probably not. Will it always nag at me that turnout might be a little better if I did? Probably so. Travis |

It really surprises me the kind of stuff that bothers people. There's so much real crap going on that caps locks seems like it should be the least of peoples worries. I post my events in caps cuz I think it looks better, I never dreamed it would bother people. Seems petty. In consideration of others I will stop posting in caps now that I know it's a problem

I post my events in caps cuz I think it looks better, Looks better? Yes, you might say it, but I might say it is more intrusive for some (eg. me) and I think if you're writing an about text (description) that should be well written to be an easy read. Compare this: Event description: GOOD MORNING SECOND LIFE!! ICE DRAGON RESORTS INVITES YOU OVER IN YOUR PJ'S AND NIGHTIES TO COMPETE FOR BEST PAJAMA'S CONTEST! WE WILL HAVE 2 WINNERS WHO WILL EACH RECEIVE 250L EACH!! THE MEETING SPOT IS RIGHT BY OUR TRINGO HALL WHERE GAMES ARE ALWAYS GOING ON! WE WANNA SEE YOU THERE FOR DANCING AND TRINGO IN YOUR JAMMIES. THIS EVENT IS ONE OF MANY GOING ON EACH AND EVERYDAY @ ICE DRAGON RESORTS. MAKE SURE YOU COME FOR BINGTRIS TONIGHT!! COME ON OVER AND WIN, WIN, WIN!! MAKE OUR RESORT YOUR SECOND HOME. WE WELCOME YOU WITH A SMILE ![]() And this: Event description: I give clues and you try to guess what word i'm thinking of. you could be the one that walks away with the money in the pot and a nice inventory item. ![]() Event description: Primtionary! Primtionary is a game is very much like pictionary. Contestants are given a word and have to build clues on stage using prims, everyone in the audience then guesses the word being built from the clues. L$25 of prize money is awarded to the builder and first correct guesser. If you haven't seen Primtionary before, teleport over to Argnet and come play. But yes, it might really be a matter of stylistic preferences. Though if you opened a local newspaper and everything was written in a 1000 styles, that would annoy some. |

It
could be worse. They could use a carriage return after every single flipping word. Nothing is more annoying. Especially in IM. Wow, that was kind of hard to do. ![]() |
