Hi as someone who joined the game after tringo had already been established, I have to ask - what used to fill the events caledar before tringo, did no one do anything, or was it all hot body/blue hat/dance contests? I have no problems with tringo and even play sometimes, but I guess my concern is that it seems like there is never much else to do other than that on the events calander. I've only been here a couple months and am feeling a little stifled. Any suggestions?

Very nice question. As I look back I have to laugh. In the past the Lindens supported all events with 5 or more av's in attendance for a period of 30 minutes or more. The host would get $500L for prize money to distribute and $250L to pocket. They changed that citing inflation to what you see now. Only certified instructor educational events are eligible now for the ducks.
I used to host the Tribal Drum circle Monday through Friday. Each day was a different b uild theme for prize money voted on by the 'tribe' of contestants/attendees. WE had Drumstick builds, Drum builds, Native American artwork, cowboy and indian night etc. I would love to bring this back maybe on a once a week type event. The calendar used to be filled with all sorts of events such as this. Show and Tells, Best Textured build, DIY Airplane contest etc. It is shameful what we have now but c'est la vie. Second Life goes on. _____________________

For the real answer see Lecktor's post above.
For the silly answer, there was Bingo! And quite a bit of it too, but not to the extent it covered the event calendar like Tringo does. _____________________

I sure missed the great variety of events SL had before... some still around, but the host don't get paid, which is sad...

Well, I appreciate the feedback. I basically just spend my SL time building and wandering around, which is certainly fun in its own way, but it would be nice to be involved in larger and more organized activities too. It seems like, even though events arent LL subsidized anymore that people would still want to host events on their land for the sake of getting dwell. (of course I'm not a landowner or an expert on dwell so who knows). Maybe people are just short on freetime and ideas?

Um, yeah, secondlife was nicer back then, but not really that much, there was certainly more to do, like Lecktor said above, but people tend to cling on to trends, and secondlife is kind of growing too fast for the lindens it seems. Or something. Does anyone else here remember the day they said they were going to stop announcing events, and that you had to search for them yourself?
Anyway, eventually we will have a lot more things to do, people arnt going to stop making things just because there is one huge ultra popular game out. In fact, I played a game of spades yesterday. But until people are actually rewarded for events that better the community, you cant really expect that much. Except tringo and goth contests. |

Oh, and of course people do host events for the sake of getting dwell, just do a search in the events menu for "the edge" those are the events people want, in fact the edge gets +30,000 dwell. We should all follow their example. Definately.

Before Tringo there was a lot of Bingo, raunchy club events and gambling. Ah, for the good old days of the NO HOST CHAT

Our next photography contest at the Photography Studio in Grignano starts June 6th - to enter take a screenshot using one of the backdrops (which will be up on the 6-15th and will have a theme) and your imagination, props, and costumes. Right now you can see the exhibit of shots from the first contest. They are very, very cool - even if you don't want to enter come and see what Second Lifers get up to.

I can imagine the Lindens are happy to not be announcing any more.
![]() Xxxxx Linden shouts: It's almost 6pm! We have tringo once again in 19 locations, and if you don't like tringo, just visit a random club because Tringo's all there is until next Thursday! Now imagine shouting pretty much the same thing every hour until next Thursday. ^_^ _____________________

Before Events Funding Cuts
05-26-2005 14:44
Before the events funding cuts, we used to do lots more varied events and tringo was around, but was definitely balanced out by other stuff. Sure there were contests, but there were also more fun things in a variety of event areas, partly because the Lindens paid a modest fee to the hosts for doing them. ($250 with an additional $500 for prizes).
I saw more frequently stuff like poet's open mics, build contests, and I used to host more frequently events like scener's competitions (like improv theatre, but in game) and round robin storytelling. Now, the only way for hosts to be paid is if the club owner is willing to pay out of pocket at his or her own expense without fully being able to recoup those costs through dwell. This is a complex issue and I don't think events will recover until we find a way to have incentives for good hosts to do this work. Who wants to work for free? not many people, and certainly not for long. Many club owners also have sold their properties or stopped doing events altogether due to this issue. I'd like to see it turn around but i am not sure how without subsidies for events coming from somewhere. Anyway back to your question, this is why we have so much tringo. It is one of the few events that actually pays for itself. Games like Tringo, Slingo, Acrophobia and others where you pay to a pot make it possible, sometimes, for the host (who does all the work of making the event happen) actually gets an incentive for doing that. No other events are able to make enough $ for the host to be paid unless people were charged at the door, and so far the SL community seems reluctant to pay a door charge. I started asking for tips at events, and have gotten very low response, even when people had a great time. Fundamentally, the culture of SL must make a shift for people to believe events are worth paying for before we get a diverse events calendar back again. Also, a box office script would really help. Best of all would be if we got some form of events funding back, but Robin's last answer on that was an unqualified and unexplained "no." Hi as someone who joined the game after tringo had already been established, I have to ask - what used to fill the events caledar before tringo, did no one do anything, or was it all hot body/blue hat/dance contests? I have no problems with tringo and even play sometimes, but I guess my concern is that it seems like there is never much else to do other than that on the events calander. What we really is a new events filter--A button that you check that says "Filter out Tringo/Slingo", so that you can find other events

I think I feel the way Toy does...isnt this supposed to be a game not a job? I understand that people want ways to make L$ (me too) but if people hosted events that they actually enjoy it seems like that would be a reward in itself.
I think I'm going to have to start a new thread on the topic: What if there was no L$ in SL? Would people stop playing? Would people still make or do anything? |

I see people at Classic Games Park in Fuchsia, and others playing Prim Attack in Luna, so I don't think the money and/or event requirement is necessary for people to enjoy themselves here, particularly established players. There are also events like Captions which are very well attended, and prizes are secondary to the entertainment and socializing. Tringo is similar in that it tends to be a very social, unthreatening atmosphere. I think many of those people would play regardless of the size of the Tringo pot.

I believe...
05-27-2005 04:56
that the state of events changed when stipends were readjusted.
For me, as a Mentor and sl host, I didn't mind putting in my own money. The money we got "paid" by the Lindens for events only partially paid back what I put out. But, when the Lindens cut both it just about buried me and my partner because we really sunk alot into events. The majority of all of my events were also held on Linden Land so no dwell either. But the upside to this for me is that it forced me to finally figure out how to do the one thing in sl I always aspired to.... make clothes. I do hope that I am even semi successful when my line hits the sales market so that I can again fund my events. I got the most pleasure hosting my Free Raffles and my themed Show and Tells. I really want to go back to doing these. _____________________

My favorite type of event was always the Show and Tell types at stage 4. You build/script something and show it off. The audience then voted on the best. There were 1st 2nd and 3rd place winners.
I really miss those. _____________________

Yeah I remember that. One of my main pet peeves. Pretty much attendance at events dropped to an all time low in the weeks and months after that. Particurlarly in the SL Basics type classes. Many who taught those just stopped doing them altogether as a result. Then came the fun spam from calling card lists, spam going out on group channels, 3-4 hour events, TP contests and incentives which then of course increased the spam and look where we are today. I'd suggested an automated announcement thing complete with an on/off toggle, but I guess it wasn't technically possible, as it got shot down. Currently the process for "approval" of education events is quite cumbersome in my view, and limited in its definition to begin with. And if anyone who's done the research, preparation and RL work hours it takes to put together these sorts of classes, the incentive doesn't quite cut it. Hence a lot less of those types of events. anyhow I'm done now - basically what Lecktor said ![]() _____________________

Weel..way back, there weren't many events, but the ones that were there included poetry contests, building contests, house parties, bingo, charity events (used to be alot of those), fashion shows, discussion groups, and formal occasions like gallery openings, art exhibits and socials.
Those are all still around, but seems like they aren't cause they are lost in the crowds. to me, who cares how many events are posted. I am fully capable of scanning through them when I'm looking for something to do, and picking the ones I'm intersted in. Hell..i remember when it was a big deal if there were two events at the same hour of the day, and folks being pissed about the competition. Now there are like 20 an hour. _____________________

Here's the event calendar for a year ago today. A pretty short list compared to what we see now, but remember there were fewer people around to keep entertained back then.

My favorite type of event was always the Show and Tell types at stage 4. Misty Rhodes is putting her first show and tell on in a long time this evening at 6:00! It's going to be at the Oak Grove Linden teaching area 179, 189. _____________________

The only event I ever held was a clogdancing/Celtic music festival and it was only for fun and there certainly was no profit as it cost me $1500L to put it on. I may have gotten some dwell, I can't remember. We had a good turn out (crashed the sim) and I would love to do more as long as my money holds out and I have an idea of what people want.
One person suggested a ghost story around the campfire event at our Forest Reserve but I am so worried that no one will show and then I will cry all night. I really don't want to put on a "naked schoolgirl" event. ![]() |

I would like to see more discussion event and classes.
I still think we need to have a board at the welcome area for newbies to view about events. I really think we have too much tringo bingo so on, it' gets old fast. _____________________

But what really impressed me is that Jinny Fonzarelli already hosted the Thinker's events one year ago... hehe ![]() ![]() _____________________
