Am I losing my mind, or does http://www.secondlifeherald.com/ nolonger exist?

I get a 'server not found' message for at least the last couple days (if not longer).

What happened?

Might be some whacky routing at your ISP, Ghoti. Try hitting it from a proxy such as http://www.the-cloak.com

That's very weird.... both at home (comcast cable) as well as here at work (a university) it does not work. 'Server not found' error.

Yeah, it works through that site... this is so strange.... other than being in the same town, these are two totally seperate ISPs.

Anyone have an idea how to track this down?

Both ping and tracert tell me they can not find the host.

Your ISP is summarily detecting and destroying bad reporting before it can get to your computer.

See if you can get to foxnews.

The two ISPs possibly have the same upstream provider. If so, the route will be borked on both of them. These things are usually fixed in a few days, but often there is not a lot your ISP can do about it. Unless, of course, you know someone there who is nice enough to route traffic through their secondary provider (if they have more than one). :)

So should I let me ISP know or something so they can feed word back upstream? I wonder what else is being blocked.

I'm betting they both do have the same upstream... ti is more than likely Merit, which I know does the school, and I beleive does all of southeast Michigan.

There might not be anything the ISP could do, especially if the blockage is a few hops up the pipe. That's why I suggested they re-route your traffic through their secondary upstream provider if they have one. However, not a lot of ISPs will do this for the customer. I work for a small local ISP (around 8000 customers), and we're quite personal with our customers so we do things like this for them once in a while.

try pinging/tracert the IP: 204.9.178.60

If this doesn't work then its a routing issue. If it DOES work then your local upstream/isp has a fucked up DNS server cache that needs to be flushed i.e. rebooted.

I have the same problem at work, but not at home! Weird. Time to do some tracerouting if I get inspired. :)

It's likely waaay up the pipe, then. If so, there is a good chance it will be fixed soon. In the meantime, www.the-cloak.com will work in a pinch.

It's at least two ISPs, Lupus. Ghoti has tried through two, and I don't know if Flipper uses one of these two or not.

This is exactly the case. The domain name fails while the number address succeeds.

BTW, this is the kinda bullshit we can look forward to without Net Neutrality in place, eh?

Basically what this means then is name resolution on a DNS server SOMEWHERE is borked.

Mind you just because its two different ISP's doesn't mean they aren't sharing resources. I was shocked and amazed when switching from AT@T back in the day to netzero in the same town that my call in number was <GASPS> the same number. They were sharing an IPX at a 3rd party reseller giving them presense in that town ;)

On your windows machine type ipconfig and snag the Connection-specific DNS Suffix

Then try:
nslookup
server (then insert whatever you got for conn specific dns suffix)
then put in the domain for the herald
if it comes up with an oddball IP different from the one I posted it means that the herald has switched IP addresses and the DNS server is caching an old one. Happens ALL the time.

Call the ISP and have them source ping/and/or flush the dns cache via HUP or reboot.

*nods*

Normal propagation is usually 24-48 hours, but can sometimes be a few days.

it tells me

> nslookup secondlifeherald.com
*** Can't find address for server secondlifeherald.com: Non-existent domain

You could put an entry in your local hosts file for this address/name.
