Here's what I propose: The the right of the chat bar, the the left of the Gestures drop down, insert a drop down for your current status with the following options: (1) Available (2) Away (3) Busy (4) Invisible (5) Off Line 1, 2 and 3 would function exactly as the current Normal / Away / Busy options. Option 4 would remove your green dot from the map, and make you appear off line to everyone BUT your Friends. Option 5 would remove your green dot from the map and make you appear off line to everyone, INCLUDING your friends. There are a bunch of proposals out there right now which are all calling for this functionality: http://secondlife.com/vote/index.php?get_id=721 -- 162 votes http://secondlife.com/vote/index.php?get_id=541 -- 26 votes http://secondlife.com/vote/index.php?get_id=479 - 217 votes http://secondlife.com/vote/index.php?get_id=52 - 924 votes That's a total of *1,329* cotes, just from those four proposals - and there are many more similar proposals. Now, to take this suggestion a step farther, so it makes even more sense, and removes a HUGE amount of hits to the database and user servers: completely remove both FRIENDS and CALLING CARDS and put everyone on a level playing field. Then instead of having other people offer cards or friendship, give everyone a white list and black list that they maintain. Anyone on your white list (think friends) would be able to map you / see your green dot / see you as on-line even if you're in mode 4, invisible. Anyone on your black list would never see your green dot, and always seen you as off-line. Think about how much work this would save the asset server - I have over 3000 calling cards and many, many friends, most of which aren't even in SL any more. These have to be streamed with my inventory every time I have to log in. I find this ridiculous, and out-dated; over 50% of my inventory is calling card / friend related. Also, LL, here's a vote I found which can be closed, as its requests "Allow LAND owners to turn on teleport to a point they select" - that's in with 1.8: http://secondlife.com/vote/index.php?get_id=266So what do y'all think? Isn't this long, long, long overdue, especially with P2P stalking now completely possible? Regards, -Flip

So you make your green dot invisible and get inside an invisiprim - might this allow people to snoop on others unaware?
The reason for not having the green dot on the map - is that so that people who know where your land is can't see you are home?
Perhaps the green dot should only be able to be hidden when you are on your own land?
If people are on my land I want to be able to see their green dots on the map.

Be strong (or a bastard) and just delete all your calling cards. I deleted all my cards and my Second Life has been alot calmer since. Just explain in your profile that you don't collect cards and people don't seem to mind. I also rephrased my busy message. The default busy message has a way of making you look ignorant.
A good message is something like:
"Fuckoff!!!"
No, sorry, that's bad. A good one is:
"I'm not available right now. Can you please leave a message?"
I really don't have a single calling card. I'd delete God's card if he gave it to me, and maybe even Jennifer Lopez's. Just be openly busy and people will respect it. Don't go hiding in the sky or people will come flying up and will then feel stupid when they see that you're in Busy mode.

From: SuezanneC Baskerville So you make your green dot invisible and get inside an invisiprim - might this allow people to snoop on others unaware? Perhaps they could make it so your green dot is always visible to anyone in the same sim. We desperately need these features. It's not just about privacy. It's about being able to get work done. Busy mode is pretty useless since everyone knows you're online. They'll keep IM'ing away even though they're getting your busy message, and they'll stand next to you impatiently waiting for you to notice them. It can be incredibly difficult to get needed things done when you can't have long stretches of uninterrupted time. People shouldn't have to rely on alts for this. If I need to work on a new product I don't want my alt's name as the creator. We should have the friends list and privacy features of any other chat program.

I don't seem to have this problem. I am not questioning the desirability of "more privacy" but I find that that I need to know if people are nearby in order to feel a sense of privacy. Also, people use the green dots to judge where the action is in deciding where to go. Loss of green dots on the map would make that not work as well. Does the presence of one's green dot on the map do the green dot's owner any real good in general? Assume for the sake of discussion that it doesn't , and that 90 of the users turned their green dot off. That would make the map's view of how many are where where pretty distorted. Oh, also, it's not just invisaprims that allow snooping, the "go underground" animations do that too. So someone turns on all their privacy features and goes underground on your land and watches you do the stuff you wanted to do in private.

Yes, Yes, Yes and Yes again.
I need a way to be able to log on and work without interruption. I don't want to hide - I don't mind if someone can see my green dot or my Avatar. But when folks can map me, or get a popup that says I'm online - some take that as an invitation to chat.
So many times I'm deep into a script, and the IMs start stacking. Yes, I can simply throw my Busy tag on - but that doesn't stop folks from mapping me and TPing right to where I am.

My ideal proposal would be slightly different a bit simpler:
(1) Available (2) Away (3) Busy (4) Offline or Invisible
In mode 4, you appear offline to everyone including friends. A friend cannot map or tp to you.
The green dots remain though. Those green dots are important to the privacy of others around you. Please don't take away the green dots.

So griefers, like myself, just need to make ourselves invisible so we can stalk people in total anonymity?

Give us the power to be in world but invisible! If we are to become totally invisible inworld, other people should be invisible to us, and chat lines to other avatars should be cut off, to prevent spying, eavesdropping.

Fine by me. All I want is a way to log on & use the script editor, build objects, or access my inventory - in peace. Although - I'm not supportive of Avatar invisiblity. There's zero point to that other than making it easier for griefers. Its chat invisibility that's so long overdue, and what most of us are clamoring for.

Maybe if you enter Hide mode you can't leave your own land or the land of a group you are in or you you have to get permission from the landowner to be on their land? This is starting to sound like the often requested offline version of SL - where you can build, script. import textures, bvh's, etc. without entering the grid at all. If you were restricted to your own land, you might even be able to make a case for avatar invisibility - so you could be in your store working while the customers are there buying and not get in each other's way.

From: Roxie Marten Okay I will play stupid. Why is this long over due? Afraid someone might see you take a virtual shower? Nope - just because its next to impossible for me to log into my primary account and either get work/building done, or spend a quiet evening with a few friends, before I become completely swamped in Instant Messages. SL for my FlipperPA account may as well just be AIM or Yahoo IM. Cancelling cards and friendships leads to far too many explanatory conversations and hurt feelings. However, if we go to a white list/black list, all those hurt feeling will go away, you'll never have to worry about rejecting someone's card, and so on. I thought they fixed the glitch that allowed for invisiprims? I believe you can still go invisible but you can no longer hide your group tag / name. Try it, and let me know if its possible - if it is, I haven't figured out the new hack. My group tag and name text always appear, even when in an invisiprim. Hiding the green dot only on your land or land you're a group officer of sounds like a good implementation, Sue - I like it! Regards, -Flip

Actually, while we are asking for privacy features;
what about a 'localised rendering' option; the same as 'localised sound' is. Anything in the parcel is invisible to the outside (the ground just looks barren), and anything outside the parcel is invisible from the inside?
