Has there ever been any content in SecondLife that you would think of as "ground breaking"? Something created by a user that made a serious impact on the grid and changed some kind of aspect of the day to day affairs?

I once saw one of Cubey's planes hit the floor at great speed. That was pretty ground breaking. I think the hole is still there in Morris.

I think there have been lots of tiny ground-breaking (.25m2?) things that have inched us along. More like hoeing or weeding a flowerbed than excavating for a dam.

And Washu's wigs :-D

Kris Ritter's first dance machine, and later, CrystalShard's couple's dance bracelet. Also, Francis Chung and Rathe Underthorn's ROAM device.

The widespread use of animation overriders and offset animations for giant avatars.

I am not sure if it is ground-breaking or not, but Snapzilla has certainly added something to SL. We now have a visual history of the past year of life in SL, even if it is mostly pictures of Willow Zander saying "OMG LOOK AT MY NEW SKIN" :) It has also become a verb, like Tivo, which is kind of cool I think. I am excited for the integration of HTML finally into SL - it will open up even more possibilities for sharing.

The Dominus Shadow made by Francis Chung & Co. -most likely just set a new standard for vehicle making

HyperTeleporter/P2P Teleporter by Hank Ramos -great freebie alternative to ROAM, not as ground breaking as WetIkon ROAM by Francis Chung & Co.

X-Flight -I don't think nude photos of Pamala Anderson are as wide spread as this little script

WetIkon Animation Overider -Probly the best and most wide spread animation overider in SL, also made by Francis Chung & Co.

Freeview -multimedia control by CrystalShard Foo, set the standard for all media viewers hands down

SL Exchange -probly the best web based SL market out there (its owned not created by Anshe Chung so its all good)

Ginko Finacial -although controversal at the moment, made saving your lindens possible without owning an alt

JEVN/JENC -most wide spread networked vendor/catalog systems. Dunno if its the first, but its currently the best until someone comes up with something better.

I'll probly think of more later, but lets face it.. Francis Chung and Company make some of the best quality stuff out there.

Good sugestions everyone. Just to ad one,

I have said before I think the highly stylized/painted/hand drawn clothing I first saw by Nylon Pinkney as opposed to photosourced or just hand drawn made to look realistic is a cool trend started in sl. Its cool to see it embraced by many and see the technique refined and remixed with different peoples own style.

absolutely.

also...the people that have done work attempting to work shadow details into thier builds. that wasnt groundbreaking so far as games in general go, its a common enough method, but when people started to do it, it was a revelation. :)

i don't know if it changed the grid, but in terms of expanding people's ideas about what was possible, I would say Chinatown, maybe even Midnight City but I'm biased there.

i hear stories about the first White Star builds really changing building concepts in SL... wasn't around back then tho

I would like to ditto the comments on Francis and rathe's ROAM, and Nylon's gorgeous hand-drawn art.

Without mentioning anything that's been said before...

I think the sit-hack teleporter could be considered ground-breaking. I'm not entirely sure who figured out this trick, but Kex Godel wrote the first implementation I ever saw. That possibility has influenced how properties and builds are laid out.

Another one is Cristiano's Snapzilla which has really changed the way people share photos and memories with each other :)
