With so many bugs and broken features already existing in SL I am disgusted that you would let a pile of junk like this make it to an update while so many other things need fixing, instead you introduced another severely broken feature

Spending an hour trying to work in SL with this inventory is like trying to give a speach while someone punches you in the stomach at random intervals... It's painful and pointless

I just laughed for 20 minutes after that post. hahah And the sad part is it is totally true!

NEW INVENTORY MANUAL (swiped from press, variable velocity)

re: bugs... see this thread

You've Got Inventory!
How to use the new "inbox" and filtering features

Right below is "Show all folders", which--like it says--displays all folders when doing a search. Unchecking it will only display folders containing matches.

This one absolutely drives me crazy. I use the search function...a lot. I also have a lot of folders set up...a lot. What this means is that EVERY time I do a search (see second sentence) I either have to scroll through a long list of empty folders that have nothing to do with my search....or....I can go to Filters, select Modify Current, and uncheck the Show All Folders box. Every time I search. Why this box does not save it's checked or unchecked status between searches is completely beyond me. For that matter, if you're doing a search, why would you EVER want to see folders that DON'T have what you're looking for?

In any case, it sure seems to me that showing only the folders that contain matches should be the default setting. Either that, or save the status of the Show All Folders box between sessions.

MY OLD INVENTORY BACK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I do not like green eggs and ham and I do not like your new inventory Sam Linden! Seriously I am bugged big time since the update I have to clear my cache everytime I open it or I cant open my files. This is no way for me to spend my game. I dont like it at all. I think its a waste of my time. I have to log out log in log out log in. By time I get an outfit I like on Its time to go to bed. And why and who organized my stuff? Its all GONE! The things I made which were called objects with no name but I knew what was in it and where it was I found in the trash. I really wish you would reconsider this because taking a class on how to open my inventory and finding what I need was not on my agenda today.

This new inventory sucks.

Fix it.

Will this oh, so cool new feature stop items from disappearing from inventories?

No. I had no problems with items disappearing before the update. Now I do.

What was that nonsense about "scalability"? We can't even get what we have to work right, much less scale it.

After my initial anxiety of not seeing things where I thought I had left them, I clicked on "sort by date" and all was right with the world again.

It was interesting to see that ";(" comes before "*" in the alphabet.

Same here... it's like getting a new couch, it just feels wierd and ackward at first, but soon, you get your ass groove going back into the cushion, and you stop accidentally opening up the cup holder in the arm rest, and it just starts simply working again. I do wish settings would persist over sessions, though.

Bugged it...

I just filed a bug on the new inventory, entitled "'Show All' button is missing".

If there's a way to search for an item, then, when found, show the _rest_ of the content of the folder in which that item was found (as we could do when the 'Show All' button was there) I'd love to hear about it.

Happy scrolling!

In a word, it's crap.

this is a mild description they took what was a managable system and turned it into a disaster.

Exactly - this is the biggest complaint about the new inventory that I have. Being able to sort folders by date FINALLY is great, but the Show All button made it extremely easy to get to the contents of a folder after you found it (since it only shows the items in the folder that match the name you are searching). Torley, you posted a huge explanation of how the new inventory works - but this single, deal breaking features seems to be MIA. Why was it removed, and is there another way to accomplish the same thing (without going through about 50 steps?). Instead of making things easier, this has made it more difficult to manage inventory.

Haven't experimented with the new inventory system all that much, but I will step forward and point out *one* good thing about it.

Searching is much faster. Thank you! I can tell it in the inventory window or in the texture picker to search for a texture name, and it actually finds it right away. Before, I could go brew a pot of coffee while I waited for it to find one texture that I knew the exact name of... Most of the time I could also drink half a cup of coffee before it was done sorting through my 8K or so inventory items...

Personally, I didn't have any trouble realizing that clearing the text in the search field would show everything again. I'll admit it's less intuitive than the former 'show all' button, though.

Now to be critical...

The "recent items" being limited to the last login is almost useless. It would be far more useful if you could specify a DATE, and show items recieved or changed since that date!

And I'll agree with most of the other critical comments here. Having the window scroll on it's own because someone else logs on or off is insane. Having it show unrelated folders when doing a search is just plain odd. Etc...

*blush*

I feel partly responsible... having made the proposal to have incoming items filtered off into a central inbox. (I would still prefer that they arrive there and not automatically get dumped into my existing folders... but can make do with a 'view' approach instead.)

Object focus is clearly not behaving as intended. (if it is, then the intented behavior is just wrong! :))

I hope some of the other enhancements coming down the pipe will allow adding 'custom' tabs. As it is, it's too cumbersome to find what we use often.... It'd be a huge win to park a tab on our favorite textures folder and another our utility attachments (as arbitrary examples), and know that when we flip to that tab we'll see exactly what we're looking for. (that is and still have a tab for global inventory and one for recent items, etc, etc)

And like browsing the web... being able to option-click or right-click on a folder to "open folder in new inventory window" instead of the cumbersome file->open new window would be much appreciated.

Anyway... it's a step.

You are not limited to just items received since your last login. Click on Recent Items, then Filters-->Modify Current, and specify how many days back you want it to go. I was easily able to see everything I have received in the past 7 days, which is very nice - I have a gift from someone I didn't even notice I had :)

strange idea i had last night while looking thru the new inventory window... i started thinking about it like i was just sorting my browser bookmarks.

sooo, wouldn't it be kewl to have a menu in the menubar - 'Inventory':) - with all your organized subfolders below it? and then, upon coming to rest on an item, the resulting submenu from that are (generally) non-edit functions, like 'wear', 'attach', etc etc?

i know i sure can scroll submenus a lot faster than navigating a window of nested folders...

ok, ok!! :) i know the mantra... 'fix what's there first'...:)

P.S. I know the filters aren't the most apparent things to find and there's useful stuff in there which isn't dang obvious. Glad to see the spread of knowledge.

One of my early questions was: "Okay, so say it shows items Since Logoff... what if I crash?"

^ very typical enduser thing, so Hours and Days got added. And more to come. :)
