Yeah... a manual would be nice. I thought from the release notes that this would be neat, but now I'm having a hard time grokking the change.

I've never sorted my inventory .. it was always easier for me to leave it as it was .. which was sorted by date.

The first time I took something tonite I was thrown. But I went up, selected sort by date .. and things are back to normal.

Guess the default is sort by name ... LOL. I think Im going to really like the "recent items" tab though.

Hopefully there'll be a manual for finding things that come up missing. I had 5 new animations in my inventory tonight, freshly uploaded. I'd tested them, made a new folder, did some other things, went back to my house and suddenly pieces of my floor started disappearing. So did items from my inventory, including most of the junk under "Objects" and the new animations.

I relogged and nothing changed. Is this what they refer to as an "update"?

Previously, when you did a search, you could highlight a folder with a found item in it, click on "Show All", and the folder would stay selected, allowing you to look at the rest of the objects in the folder.

Now you can't do this, or so it seems to me.

Why we can't leave the search term in it's field ,and right click on a folder that has an object that meets the search criteria, and select "Open this folder", excapes me. It would nice.

Why we can't have an option to search folder names only also escapes me, it would make having a well structured folder system a lot more useful.

Indeed thank you for the new recent items tabbed inventory that I have to manually move shit around to use when I'm creating things (you know - creation - the making of the world thats supposed to be our job and shit).

Its such a collosal pain in my arse I don't know how I lived without it.

I'm so happy that I can now take longer to do shit while making stuff, while the prims I'm editing still vanish before my very eyes every 20 seconds.

Thank you.

.... oh sorry did I forget my <sarcastic fuck> tag?

My bad.

Oh yeah and the jumping inventory when one of your friend cards updates it's status.....

scroll.....
scroll.....
scroll.....
scroll.....
scroll.....
Someone logs on.....
scroll.....
scroll.....
scroll.....
scroll.....
scroll.....

And why the hell do I need to scroll past all the empty folders after a search?
--(Edit)-- I found the ultra hidden easter egg feature to not display every folder

I wish I didnt run the update, this blows

Inventory screen; menu option SORT->BY DATE

Doesn't fix all the *cencored* that was done to the inventory, but at least puts it back to something we can -sort- of manage.

I agree, smack the programmers who did this and explain to them what TESTING is before implementations of a piss-poor interface.

I hope I'm proved wrong - but history shows a good indication of someone going 'tabbed inventory - DONE!' and moving onto the next shiney.

I thought these minor updates were to fix problems introduced? Since 1.10 prims have been up and vanishing for no reason whatsoever in the viewer (that is to say for all purposes like colliding they are there - but you can't edit them nor see then).

Tabbed inventory would be a godsend if implimented in a manner that actually lets you save time and be useful.

for instance:

Imagine if you could right click a folder and have the option to make it a tab

then be able to drag soemthing to a tab and have it go there..

now your on the way to making something usefull.....

Sorry but I felt that I just wasted 5 minutes of my life downloading this for bugger all fixes and more headaches.

Hmm... I've been playing around with this a touch, and I think it will be something I can get used to once I figure it out. While with all updates, it is quite slow at first to learn a new way, but I am thinking once I learn how to work all the options, my inventory will be easier to manage than before.

NEW INVENTORY MANUAL (swiped from press, variable velocity)

re: bugs... see this thread

You've Got Inventory!
How to use the new "inbox" and filtering features

Ever got something from a friend but couldn't find it in your inventory? Perhaps you just logged on and started digging, only to give up in despair after wasting time because you have thousands of items and lost track of what to search for. Or what about shopping? Ever find it inconvenient to buy something and not have quick access to use it right away?

We've listened to the community about these frequent problems, and delivered--literally! Second Life 1.10.2 introduces a new inventory "inbox" which shows recently-received items, AND better filtering to help you find what you're looking for.

USING THE NEW TABS
As soon as you open your inventory (push the Inventory button on the Toolbar or go to View menu > Inventory), you'll see there are two new tabs titled All Items and Recent Items--just like tabs in the Instant Message window. Click on Recent Items to see what you've received since the last time you logged off from Second Life. If there's nothing in there, don't worry--just ask a friend to send you an object or buy something from a store, and voila! You'll see it appear. It can get pretty addictive to watch the list grow--just like checking your inbox in an email program.

Tip: Spend a few minutes a day sorting your inventory. It all adds up in the long run. Especially now that having an "inbox" makes it easier for you to sort in the first place, don't wait for crap to pile up--save yourself time and trouble and sort often!

Note: You only have one actual inventory. These tabs simply give you the convenience of viewing your inventory in clearer ways, sort of like seeing in the dark with night vision goggles.

LITTLE THINGS THAT MAKE A BIG DIFFERENCE
There are several subtle-but-welcome changes to the Inventory window, including:
  1. X marks the spot - An X, which clears the current query when pressed, appears at the very right of the search bar when it's typed into.

  2. Sort menu's "Folders Always by Name" - When checked and you've set Sort menu > By Date, this forces your folders to be displayed alphabetically, as was the case in previous versions of Second Life. For example, "Animations" will appear ahead of "Clothing". If unchecked, then folders with the newest received items will be sorted by date too, meaning if you just got a shirt in "Clothing", it'll appear at the top of the list. Try it and see!

  3. Filters menu - Lets you modify and reset the current filters. Filters are useful because they let you show and hide types of inventory items for a more uncluttered view--and newly-introduced, you can set a time for which recently-received items are displayed.

Tip: The All Items and Recent Items tabs each have their own unique filter settings. What you filter in one tab doesn't affect the other. While it may initially be confusing, you can use this to your advantage because you can sort inventory with two different views at once, simply switching between tabs!

FURTHER FILTERING
If you've never used filters before, try this to get a hands-on feel:
  1. In the Inventory window, click the All Items tab and open a lot of folders by clicking on the white triangles. They'll "expand" and the arrows will rotate to point downwards, indicating they're open.

  2. Select the Filters menu > Modify Current.

  3. In the filters window, uncheck all the inventory item type checkboxes and watch things "disappear". Don't worry, you haven't lost anything! It's still all there--just hidden. Check the boxes and look as they're shown again. It's easy to recognize a type of item by its icon (the little picture to the left of its name).

You can toggle all item types with a single click by using the All and None buttons.

Right below is "Show all folders", which--like it says--displays all folders when doing a search. Unchecking it will only display folders containing matches.

Keep going down and you'll see "Since Logoff", which is enabled by default on the Recent Items tab. It's short for "Show me the items I've received since the last time I logged off from Second Life". If that's not good enough for you, alternatively, you can specify a time range. For example, entering 7 days and 14 hours means, "Show me the items I've received since the last 7 days and 14 hours".

Tip:
If you ever think you've lost inventory, be sure to check that your filters are showing everything!

ADVANCED INVENTORY MANAGEMENT
There are a number of tricks which aren't immediately obvious but are extremely useful for highly-efficient organizing of your inventory:
  1. An old classic: using File menu > New Window so you have two Inventory windows open at once. You can move stuff back and forth between two folders, and yes, you can have a different view in each one. What's more, each Inventory window has its own set of filters--however, this is usually inconvenient because of the amount of screen space it uses. Which brings us back to why the All Items and Recent Items tabs are handy for showing multiple views in a single window. Speaking of those shiny new tabs...

  1. You can drag stuff from one tab to the other! VERY useful if you want to sort your Recent Items. Just click-and-drag any folder or item (hold Ctrl when clicking to select multiples) from within one tab to the name of other tab: you'll notice the view switches immediately. Move the cursor over the folder you're looking for, and release the mouse button. You'll see the folders spring back quickly, and your stuff's been moved!

Note: Main system folders, meaning the ones with special icons like Body Parts and Objects, can't be moved. Neither can the Library's contents, or the trash.
  1. Even more advanced: by altering filter settings, you can actually turn Recent Items into another All Items tab. How? Click the Recent Items tab, then open Filters > Modify Current. Uncheck "Since Logoff" and make sure no hours or days are entered. There you go--this functions similarly to having two inventory windows open, but is more compact. Conversely, you can check "Since Logoff" or enter a time for both tabs, and then you'll have what amounts to two Recent Items tabs. If you're ever unsure of your changes, just reset them from the Filters menu.

WHAT'S AHEAD
We've already aggregated a lot of feedback from the community; the new "inbox" and filtering features are the first pass in a series of inventory improvements to come. Hopefully, having these additions today makes putting everything in its right place easier for you. Enjoy!

Seriously.

You don't upload things and work on projects...

Items disappearing
06-07-2006 22:51
Will this oh, so cool new feature stop items from disappearing from inventories? Then again, I guess that's not as important to fix as being able to see what you bought before you last logged off... or something... Thanks, that's exactly what I need!

things that should not be affected by folder sort but are.

Trash folder

lost and found folder

And maybe all system folders should default to the top there isnt that many to scroll past

-----------

Bad behavior.....

***Inventory jumps to top whenever.....
Something is rezzed
something is deleted
something is picked up
a friend logs on
.......or off

Selecting close all folders is not a remembered action.... close them all... then create a box... delete the box.... presto all folders are open again

Bad Design.....

The inventory useage should adjust to it's users not the users adjust to inventory....

let us set up our own tabs, our own feng shui... what would be so hard about implimenting something like what Siggy mentioned?

Why not break out folders opening to a new window??

-------------------------

Inbox Im sure will be cool.....

Until someone passes me something and my search is foiled again by jumping to the top.

Heck it doesnt even have to be a search or sort by date to make the inventory 'update'

Give me a refresh button to choose when I want it to update and jump to the top....

---------------------
Filters to add.........

by creator
by permissions

-------------------

My take.... Roll this one back to the older yet still broken inventory and impliment the new one when it works and is not something developers have to fight with and instdead is a useful tool.

i.e. when the new feature is really an upgrade, then offer it as a patch, not when it is 1/10th complete.

I agree. I have worked un UI design projects before. This takes the cake as one of the most anti-user implementations of a new feature I have -EVER- seen.

Ever!

And it is buggy and broken to boot.

People rely on inventory in the game... some for money, all for some reason. It acts like it is possessed now, and is unusuable. I had to go on hiatus from the game once this was introduced as it is by far the biggest blunder I have seen in many months.

Please -PLEASE- remove this update... roll it back, simplify it, or close it down. It is horrific in every way. That's not hyperbole either... besides the bugs, everyone look at Ashen's excellent post. That post highlights how things "work" under the new changes. This is by design! Never mind the fact that search is broken, etc.

I will stop ranting. I just get frustrated when I pay for a broken service when the solutions (in this case... "do not roll out before we run this by some users";) seem so fantastically obvious.

a within inventory slideshow feature would be nice so we can preview textures and choose to delete them as we see them in the slideshow preview

I can think of at least a dozen freewares out there with this feature, simply google "slideshow viewer" or look on tucows or c/net downloads....

With so many bugs and broken features already existing in SL I am disgusted that you would let a pile of junk like this make it to an update while so many other things need fixing, instead you introduced another severely broken feature

Spending an hour trying to work in SL with this inventory is like trying to give a speach while someone punches you in the stomach at random intervals... It's painful and pointless

Mmm... I'm not a fan... I would have preferred an actual 'inbox' folder, that everything people gave you went into, until you sorted it. This way is more convoluted. If you logoff (or crash), before you sort your stuff, you have to fiddle about with the filters to change when it from 'since last loggoff' to a time period... and then you only see the folders, not what item and where in the folder.

And the way as you're sorting stuff, delete a box you've rezzed, and it jumps from where you were looking to the trash at the top... too much scrolling...
