After reading about the new free accounts that require no billing information to be entered whatsoever, I just have to ask what in the hell is LL thinking? Are they so desperate to bulk up the low population numbers that they will resort to forgoing even the pretense of preventing underage users from getting into SL? Cory Linden's comments about SL surpassing World of Warcraft seem ridiculous enough, but now this just seems to be some last ditch effort to inflate the population numbers. I thought the cell phone authentication method was bad enough - but not requiring any verification is just opening up the floodgates even more to griefers and underaged users. Is it really worth forgoing all common sense to just get subscribers at any cost? They're still requiring a credit/debit card for registration, even for a BASIC account. _____________________

yes.
For the next few days please don’t be surprised if you see either the old registration form or the new form. While we investigate early results of the new registration system we will likely be tuning it off, updating it, and turning it back on throughout the next few days. Chris Linden |

in the meantime, continue to half way register for names, canceling when you see the old registration screen, thereby removing them from use for all time! muahahahaha

I am unaware of any situation involving the extension of a line of credit which doesn't require a social security number. Enlighten me. I don't have a social security number. _____________________

They're still requiring a credit/debit card for registration, even for a BASIC account. Merlyn, They stated in the announcement that the new "non verified" registration is being launched in a limited manner. Chris Linden pointed out that you will see both versions of the registration page for a period of time. its very random. For the next few days please don’t be surprised if you see either the old registration form or the new form. While we investigate early results of the new registration system we will likely be tuning it off, updating it, and turning it back on throughout the next few days. - Chris Linden See the full official announcement: /3/af/112077/1.html Ano, you may want to put that link in your original post. That seems to be throwing people about the change who haven't seen the official announcement. _____________________

This bites. If we're going to go that far, we might as well SEPARATE PG SIMS from the Mature ones. When this is all said and done. I'm NOT gonna go into a place where I know MINORS are going to be. I can just see the lawsuits coming one right after another now. |

I was actually thinking about returning to SL on a regular basis. But now that LL has proven they don't really care if we have minors and griefers on the grid, well...hell with THAT!

So 'locking' a name that way reserves it for you. Still to be answered is weather that link will work to send you to the new part 2 form, when that is active again... _____________________
Sorry, LL won't let me tell you where I sell my textures and where I offer my services as a sim builder. Ask me in-world.

hehe, didn't know that, but even if that's the case, most of the people who do that are violating the number of alts rule anyway, so they probably won't, and the name is unavailable for ever for everyone else.

God, does anyone IN the US ever remember there's a world OUTSIDE the US?
Hi, I live outside the US and we don't have social security numbers outside the US. We do however, have: * PayPal accounts with PayPal VISA debit cards * Prepaid VISA debit cards you can buy at the local minimart (like 7/11) and top up like a mobile phone card * Visa debit cards linked to a bank account you can open at 16 * Visa credit cards that can be given to you by a parent * Visa, Mastercard and American Express gift cards Anyone who thinks the requirement to have a credit card has EVER kept teens off the main grid is, flatly, a moron. _____________________

Some of the following might be wrong and I currently have no way to test it.
Looking at the Lindex pages I don't see anywhere where a CC is REQUIRED. Here is the scenario I envision. A well to do trader gets several alt accounts using this new system.waits the 45 days for tier to $2000 on trading. Then passes each alt L$ to trade. Once they have made that first sell they can then buy because the cash is in the account from the sell. No CC. Heck of a way for a trader to get around tier allowances for trading and rather a scary concept. |

I don't think anyone was under the impression that there were no underage people in SL. But it was a deterrent. Especially when in it was mandatory, or at least some kind of ID was mandatory. If adults were hesitant to give over that sort of info, I would expect it would be an even stronger disinsentive to kids. But I guess I'm just another moron. Along with LL, who obviously think their numbers will boost with open registration. |

I see nothing but bad from this. I'm going to start running around on a permanant sit-shield unless I'm in a private skybox somewhere.
LL, please, for the love of all that is sacred, please abandon this idiocy that you've condemned the userbase to! This will only drive the good people who create useful content away, and usher in a horde of misshapen troll avatars tossing grey goo, orbit springs, and half-life spheres. LL doesn't have the staff for abuse reports as it is and you want to quintuple their workload? _____________________

Change bad! BAAAAD! I can only assume this policy is motivated by LL's ill will toward me personally and will have a simplistic outcome that snowballs ad absurdum.
For efficiency of discourse, please cut and paste the above paragraph to all future threads on policy changes. _____________________

Sam When I tried the other day I had to logout from my current account in order to get to the new signup page, otherwise I was seeing the old signup page. Might be worth trying that. _____________________

I am seeing a rash of Japaneseish kids with very bad japanese remarks in their profiles. I know these kids are not japanese. But What they have written is not very nice. It seems already the problem is gretting out of hand...............

this would totally explain the increasing numbers of n00bie griefers we have been receiving on Samurai Island recently. I can't get any of my own work done if I am dealing with Grieefrs all day and the Estate bann is getting filled up far too quickly!
