I made this thread because I'm sick and tired of these forums being rated PG, and I think they should be rated M. And it looks like most people agree with me, too. I put "PG-Rated" in quotes in the poll because as we have seen, Lindens apparently consider only pictures to have M content.

As someone suggested, rating them M but with a rule of no naughty bits in pictures would be good for the people at work. But at this point, I really don't worry about that too much, I just think they should not be rated the way they are, which is:

"All areas of Second Life, including the www.secondlife.com website and the Second Life Forums, adhere to the same Community Standards. Locations within Second Life are noted as Safe or Unsafe and rated Mature (M) or non-Mature (PG), and behavior must conform to the local ratings. Any unrated area of Second Life or the Second Life website should be considered non-Mature (PG)."

Now in the game, that means you don't swear in PG-rated areas. It is ridiculous to have that same rule for the forums, yet it isn't the same rule. You can get suspended in the game for telling someone to f off in the wrong area.
But cussing up a storm, lengthy discussions in the General forum about abortions with coat hangers, telling people to go f themselves, and so forth, are apparently perfectly okay in the forums.

Given the absurdity of it all, I think the forums should be rated "M," and I've long thought that. But especially now, so that at least new players will have a clear idea. BUT - I guess it would be nice to have a rule that there can be no naughty bits in pictures, too, otherwise that could get awful fast, judging by some of the pics I've run across in the game.

If they insist on rating the forums PG, then they should actually make it that way. This sort of inaccuracy and inconsistency just drives me bananas. For myself, I would prefer they rate them M.

In any case, there should be some clarification that makes sense, and on the main page for the forum rules, where new people will see them. It only takes a few minutes to write.

yes they should be PG. forums already by their nature attract the most lewd, opinionated and angrily vocal crowd in a community. It is a fact of life and though not really lewd i DO fit the later two categories.

Because of this the general guidelines MUST remain PG in nature so at least there is some means of encouraging people to keep topics of discussion and vocal debates at some level of maturity. Without the current PG criteria (which is quite vague everyone must admit) there would be no more restraints against angry posts of pure idiotic levels. Keep the PG rating and keep the forums from degrading.

EDIT: (additional points)

Also nudity is a PG level topic regardless if its against policy to be viewed at work. To be honest if you're at work you should not be ON these forums unless you happen to work for LL =-). We should not set policy for the forums based on someone who is breaking another policy to be here. Simple nudity is considered a quite normal and even artistic form of expression by anyone shy of a puritan. Its only sexual and lewd poses that makes some forms of nudity an M rated item.
