Frustrated with the term 'hater'

Is it just me or does it, like chatspeak, make you look like an ignorant uneducated jackass?

In the eternal words of Fred Durst, "drink yo' hatorade!"

1. Why do we always need threads to generate useless copycat threads?
2. How does that belong in the SL forum?
3. Is it just me or does posting that kind of thread make the original poster seem like a person with a severe lack of imagination and interesting things to say?

This has nothing to do with any thread. It is about a in game conversation, where a freebie reseller was calling everyone 'haters' every other word.

Don't assume based on things you don't know..

Not an unreasonable assumption Jonas, considering two threads down or so there's a thread entitiled 'Frustrated with haters'.

OK. It's not one of the countless copycat threads. I very much maintain my opinion of those though.

But, again, how does your original post belong in the SL forum? Did you give it an SL context?

Ok heres the context: Yesterday during a chat conference a person who happens to sell freebies was called on it. He proceded to call everyone 'haters' just because of them calling him on the freebies, and use chatspeak. Heres a paraphrase:

P1: u all just haters
P1: u betta not come 2 me
P1: i blast u haters!

Now..this doesnt look like a decent person, now doe sit? It looks like a ignorant uneducated jackass.

Thank the PC movement. Relatively popular new terms like 'Hate crimes' and 'Hate speech' have promoted the usage of the word "hate" in ways that are less personal/subjective/specific as it had been in the past. ie: "I HATE brusselsprouts!"

Now that it's tied more to a category or class of 'crime' or 'speech' it's only natural to drop the clarification and just refer to people that hate as 'haters'. Yes, I know it's associated with hip-hop faux-"hood" culture, but if a word has become relevant and precise for the desired purpose, why not use it?

Banished Words List for 2007?

So how can you tell how decent a person is by their speech? Just because somebody is uneducated does not mean they are not decent. Did you ever think that perhaps you and whoever else backed that person in a corner and he was just lashing out in defense of himself?

I'm thinking the person lacking decency might be the person making the accusations.

What a silly post. While the basic, "correct" manner of speech changes more slowly, language in general and slang especially has, throughout recorded history, constantly changed. Complaining about a particular slang word as though it occupied some unique place among the countless others, past and present, is a colossal waste of time.

You can say whatever you like and support the "dumbing down" of the english language. I can tell you by those three lines of his that its not a person I would consider as decent. That doesnt mean that you have to make the same assumptions that I do. I myself prefer not to subject my ears to that, while your ears may be alot more tolerant.

It's a completely nonsensical word. It has no affect on anyone 'cept morons. On me, you'll just get a rather endearing expression of bewilderment.

I just discriminate against those who prove that they have no desire to educate themselves, and have locked themselve sin a s'moron.' Grammar helps you look intelligent. Use it. Am I the only person under 30 who appreciates decent grammar in todays students and adults?

Somewhat less obvious was the poor usage in the sentence, "Grammar helps you look intelligent." That's not entirely correct; that is, not just any grammar does that. Good grammar does. Poor grammar, however, does not.

If you want to play the grammar Nazi game over this foolish obsession with a particular slang word, we can definitely do that.

I don't know. Perhaps it would drive my point home more clearly if I started some similar threads, such as:

Frustrated with the term "groovy"

Frustrated with the term "cool"

Frustrated with the term "yo" (albiet not the Spanish word "yo," which is perfectly correct)

Frustrated with the term "grats"

Frustrated with the term "lame"

Frustrated with the term "gay"

Frustrated with the term "whack"

I mean, this list could go on forever, and I haven't even gone back farther than 20th century lingo yet.

I *do* hate the term "haters," especially in the forums.

I see that in a thread title, and I think, "Oh boy! Drahma ahead!" But no, it's just some whinging about SL features

Please don't put words in my mouth. I never said anything about what he was doing, but you started with..."we were having a conference call..." and calling him on something he was doing. Let me think, that would make me a bit defensive.

I appreciate people being able to spell, and make coherent sentences. Just because somebody can't, doesn't make them not decent, or un-educated.

There are several people with good grammar that I consider "ignorant, uneducated jackasses."
