Hon, 1.10 isn't until tomorrow :) Today we're stuck with stinky old unfloppy prims.

mmm hmmm... thats why i said i was checking the preview grid. Which was indeed down for maintenance.

You know, I'm just expecting a lot of lag... just a ton of it... only because that's what happens with new features :D

It'll be cool having local lighting that actually works like its supposed to. And not lag out the arse. I can see this being a lot of fun at the clubs and whatnot. My framerate in the preview grid blows the main out of the water, so here's hoping for that.

Mine hasn't got above 2 fps in preview, no matter how much stuff I turn off.

Hmn... that's double what I get on 1.9

Do not hold your breath. Seen it, not impressed.
I have seen it too. I am very impressed. This is the first update in a long time that actually has me excited. I don't care so much about the floppy prim, but the lighting effects are quite beautiful and I do not find they have any negative effects on my frame rates.

In addition, occlusion culling is pretty exciting and I am interested in seeing how this change effects architecture within SL. I think we will see a lot more indoor environments and walls to block stuff. I do not fully understand what gets culled when you have a wall set to partially transparent, or that has an alpha channelled texture. But it should be very interesting.

Has it been tested enough to publish to the main servers without problems?

Will scripts break and inventory go missing? Will permissions start changing on their own again?

I hope it's a flawless update but after enough years in MMOs and enough experience with SL, I'm approaching with caution.

In other MMOs, I would actually just avoid logging in at all on update days to give the techs time to repatch (or even back patches out, which also happened) and chase down database weirdness. I'm anxious to see what this update does, though, so I'm sure I'll probably log in tomorrow night to peek... and make my first floppy prim :)

Secondary question: How long before we see floppy stuff for sale? I'm betting some of the better hair designers already have them waiting and we'll see them for sale in a day or two. Floppy hats, skirts and tiny ears not far behind. In a few months some genius will come up with something nobody else thought of, and create the new craze in SL.

First we have to survive update day. What's your plan?

I believe its possiable that up to 75% of the Second Life public will not be able to log in after 1.10 is introduced those that do, 50% of them will crash often.

Really? How odd. There's an at least 10% improvement over the frame rate I get on the main grid.

Even with my moster 256 MB ram card (Nvidia) I only have the 2 lowest lighting options in the preview that are not grayed out. That tells me that this will be very very very bad

Most people are looking at the Flashy stuff. (Oooo! Sparkley!)

As a PHP programmer, I am almost wacking off about the http functionality.

There are a LOT of database things that this will address. My test in the preview made a call to my "tagline/sage" database on my webserver and spits out a witty saying every 15 minutes or so.

This means I can keep a lot of the actual "work" on my webserver and not make LSL do all the work with its limited memory/mips. It also means I can get over a lot of the limitations of SL/LSL as far as comunications go. *whoopie*

Wonder how much more Lag that will cause?

The Critics and soothsayers trying to silence me. But its true. I have a Nvidia GeoForce 6600 card (notice this is what LL recommends) and I only have the bottom two lighting options un-grayed out. I noticed massive lag around moving prims even with that feature turned off.

I believe there is a 100% chance that someone will yank statistics out of clear blue sky. I believe there is a 0% chance they'll resemble reality.

It's gonna be like most updates. A few days of roilling hell as the grid settles back down, a dire need for a patch for problems that only full-on use brings to the surface, and then Second Life as usual, only more flexible and better lit. :)

By far the worst problem I have in the current version is tremendously slow texture loading; I'm able to fly all around in a land of gray with white outline textures, every time I teleport I enter a gray cardboard scene.

The preview grid has been consistently much much better at delivering textures.

I expect that when the new code is moved to the main grid, it won't improve the texture loading time for me at all.

We will see so many floppy prims for a while it will drive people crazy.

There will be seaweed and octopus, squids, and such in the ocean and rivers and lakes.

Many people will have driver problems and find their hardware is not able to deal with the improvements very well.

The http request function will enable the programmer users to do some neat stuff that people will like.

The horizon won't look right now to a lot of people.

Some people will be taken completely by surprise by the downtime.

People will be surprised and disappointed that linked floppy prims don't work like one would hope.

I predict there will be a flurry of 'I can't get on' posts. Followed by a flurry of 'OMG WEDNESDAY AGAIN!@!!!!one!!!eleven!!!' posts.

After that perhaps a few statements that occular culling will cause a lawsuit.

1 - 3 threads of how its ruined SL and people are leaving (for a couple of hours)

A thread or two about how the High Masters of Zion (or other mythical group) got features in while (insert fav feature here) didn't get in.

One or two locked threads... tension .... drama....

The usual.

Actually got 40 fps in one nearly empty sim. Even if it was because the sim was empty, it was nice to see the fps get that high.

I'm going to go slowly insane trying to figure out how to turn off floppy prims until they're used sensibly.
