Don't Leave rental boxes if it'snot for rent.

I just though. I post a newb experiance I had yesterday. Some people may find interesting. Or may prevent other newb from making an almost costly mistake.
I had heard that going to a mall and renting a space was a good way to sell items you make. So, I did just that. I went from mall to mall. And found one that looked pretty good. Then I saw a rental box. It said, rent was $150 a week and and you could have 50 prims there. So, I payed it. Then I arranged my objects. I though all was fine. Then I, went offline for awhile. When I came back, all my objects were returned to me, and fortunatlly, the money I payed, by the mall owner. I was a little puzzeled. But I IM. and said thankyou for returning my money. It couldof ended , there. I would of just gone on to think , well they just dont want me there for what ever reason. But, then she came back with serveral personall attacks, saying if I had any common sence, I should have known that space wasnt for rent. I told her, you have a rental box there, I understood that means the space is for rent. She explained, her tenant that had the spot before, was just being slow about paying the rent. and thats why the box opened, up. it couldof ended there. But, she kept tryign to explain, how i am lacking in the brains department, and should have known. I let her go on, and just tanked her again for returning my money, and wished her a nice day. I must say it dose make me a bit leary about, using rent boxes, apperently it doesnt always mean its for rent.

It varies by landlord of course, and the script in the rental box. I know in my rentals, the script notifies both me and the tenant when rent is coming due, which gives both parties ample time to "make arrangements" in the event that an extension needs to be granted, etc.

However, I agree that if there is a "For Rent" sign up, and you use it, you should be given consideration over someone that "oops, just ran late". Landlords need to be responsible for managing their properties to prevent such dilemmas.

Prospective tenants can also always right click on the land and edit to see if there are prims belonging to someone other than the landlord as possible indicator that there's a rental lag/dispute, though a new person certainly might not know to do this.

Rent boxes usual also provide a notecard with "the rules" for the property, and should include the landlord's name...so an IM with any questions can also rule out post-pay confusions.

But I wouldn't shy from a property solely because of a rent-collection box/object, they're quite handy. But again...landlords should be active managers of their properties (or have someone hired that does this)

You're right. The only way to truely know that though is if maybe someones objects were seen behind that rental box? If none were I'd wonder too if and why it wasn't really for rent? If I saw objects there and the box I would have then IM'd the owner to ask. Sometimes owners do let current renters slide a bit just to be safe and nice to them and find out if they want to keep the spot.

Failing that though I'd have no idea. I've rented space so I know its not always easy to know. You just have to look and hope sometimes I guess really. Which does stink. Hope you do get your things out there. It can't hurt to keep looking just if you want to be safe IM the owner and ask, "Is this space really for rent" Most likely though it is if nothing is there with the exeception of the rental box.

Please AR the hell out of that mall owner. There is no reason that person should harasse you and use crude language.

That is an unacceptable treatment of possible tenant. Just chalk it up that the manager was having a bad day.

As for the box, if nothing was in the space, it is assumed its open to rent. However if there is a rent box with stuff in the space, then it is occupied until the mall manager removes the tenants items. I guess not all mall owners have patience to deal with new folks.

I've said this before and I will say it again, I am tired of people who lack social skills in RL coming on here and ruining it for everyone else. And then there's the oh I have so and so disease, oh I am missing this or that, so that gives me the right to be a SOB in SL kind of people.

Gosh man, if you're not a nice person guess what, you could be a dismembered head in a jar, you still would be a person with no friends.

Sorry but it's time for reality check for some of our members. Coming to SL does not solve core RL issues, it just translates them to digital form and makes even more people miserable because of you in SL.

That Landlord was very definately out of line. I think you took the high road by simply wishing them a good day and moving on. But, it is they who seem a bit lacking, not you, so don't take anything they said to heart.

In an unrelated question, I'm actually looking to open a store and rent a stall or whatever in a relatively nice, low-lag environment. Anybody have any tried-and-true suggestions?

I had a similar problem with what I could only describe as a moron with no clue. I'd paid the rent, dropped my vendor after reading through what amounted to a piece of unintelligble shit posing as rules. The owner IMed me, and told me to read the rules - fuckwit sent the same crap I'd already given up reading since it made less sense than a 6 year olds version of reality. I didn't argue, cleared my vendor and told the idiot bluntly but politely and without course language to just refund my damn money.

Basically a note to mall owners - if a unit has a rent box in it, the fucking thing is there for anyone to rent. You want to do it a different way get your fucking rent boxes removed and put up signs saying 'I'm an idiot, you are not wanted here, piss off so my little clique can claim to superior beings to you!" That way at least we will know your malls are not even worth the effort they require to explore before even trying to find a unit to rent.

Oh, this was month ago.

Lets see what happend there, I went to some store wearing my slstats watch with a friend (who was about to be a customer of yours). She got harassed by some of you, I am utterly polite in SL, I never use profanity. I was talking about slstats and how everyone around us would be in it, and joking as I usually DO (yes it was joking). When you came around and starting going all elite about how I'm a newbie, about how I don't deserve to be on SL, then you did the freeze thing a few times and banned me from sim. I never went there or IM'ing you or anything.

I dare you to post a log of this incident with the profanity, I'm supposed to have used.

But yet, twice you've tried to post this on the forum. Yes, I've seen it last time and AR'ed it.

And now I know the reason why your posting this, it has to do with with a customer support thread by a friend of yours. Where she was extremely rude to the customer. You people need to know how to talk to customers. You are not above them, you are not designers, you are people who make stuff. Anyways. This is a personal disputeyou *can* use PMs right?

Edit: The other reason you went all nuts on me and your two posts here on that (which btw is against ToS?) is probably cause you saw me dressed in a furry outfit, wearing half my storm tropper outfit, immeditatly you assumed all sorts of things, I remember the childish stuff you said about my age, my social status, etc. Very not so cool.

Indeed you did show up in my store with another person, and indeed you did start spamming the area with "Now you will all be on slstats.com" and the like. But there the resembelance ends.

Myself and a few customers were chatting in a corner when you arrived. One of my custmers addressed your SlStats comments by saying "who cares". That seems to have pissed you off and you started calling us guys, said we had PMS, and commented that I was old. Among other things that followed after I asked you not to insult my customers.

No one said a word to the lady you were with in spacial that I ever heard. And the only comment to you before your sexist tirade was to politely dismiss your SlStats comments as being not important. I myself said nothing to you until you started insulting my customers, after which you insulted me, I corrected you, you called me old, and I finally sighed, freeze you and banned you.

If you had a space in a busy mall, and the rent was due and you had not paid, would you not want the same consideration of the current tenant that is a little late with paying rent?

On first occasion, I give 72 hours. Second chance is 48. 3rd is 24 hours. I never had to go to third chance yet, but there is always the late payer. I think a lot of them may have been burned from malls before, paying so far in advance then the mall leaves with no recourse of being refunded the money.

So basically what I am saying is that just because a box is there doesnt mean its ready to be rented. There are RL issues that take priority. If your unsure, contact the mall owner. Most I have met seem to be very reasonable people, although I havent rented from any of them.

Your view of mall owners could use a change? Perhaps seek out more responsible mall owners? Good Luck! Xplorer

I had a shop still open as of this morning (may be rented by now) it is in the sim Pruni which has a history of being kinda laggy but at 75 a week for a 10 x 20 shop and 50 prims allowed, it is worth it. There is a picture of it in the classifieds if you are interested Sir.

The standard rental boxes are set to warn people a few times when their rent is coming due, the box gets gradually larger again until the rental time runs out. Once that box is overdue the space is open and fair game.

When I see a box in my mall has become overdue, I send one IM to the renter and remind them that anyone can now take their space and they might want to come on over and take care of that when they get a chance.

If after they've been warned though someone does come along and rent it, my policy is that I will remove the former renters things and welcome the new renter... I feel there has been plenty of warning at that point.

Now on the other hand, as in one recent case, if I know the person is on vacation or ill or away from SL for one reason or another then I will simply remove the rental box and leave their items there until they come back. But that is MY job, if I don't do it in time thats not the fault of the person who comes along and rents. If that happens, I have to just accept that I screwed up and try to fix it by either offering the new renter a different space or giving them the one they wanted and apologizing to the former renter.

I was on vent with my guild, when a girl there wanted to buy some outfit, she was having trouble finding any women's outfits that were not thongs. Yeah lol...

Anyways, she was complaining about how your store only had thongs too, I was online in SL then, the rest of them were playing wow, so I went to check it out, and then heard you guys harassing her. Ok, 15 mins later. I was mad at my guild mate being harassed in SL, cause she was new. But that was fine, I was helping her find some outfit.

Try renting at the Promenade Mall, I have found it to be very fair and well run mall for many months now after various BAD experiences previous to this.

Well, I always contact the Landlord, before I go about renting . That way I can drag them to me and make sure I get what I paied for. It requires 5 minutes more work but 100% satisfaction.

Lost...you were correct in one thing. I was wrong to bring a personal issue to the forums. My posts have been removed and the issue taken to PMs as it should have been.
