SL Should Pay Users for Down Time

I think that SL should pay Avatars when they have down time. Business owners and Land owners lose Lindens when people can't buy. We pay each month for a service and when they are down we get no lindens, credits or RL money back. It is a very big inconvience to most of us when the site is down. Some just come on during a specific time of day or night, and can't when SL is down for so many hours.

at the very least, perhaps they might want to consider a message which says "as was announced a week ago, we are currently upgrading SL to version 1.7, please be patient" rather than whatever non-message they have now.

I mean, are they purposely trying to freak people out?

Upgrades aren't considered downtime.

You ain't lived till you been through a real SL downer!

ya know, it's sad. you people jest, but the there is a logic being this complain which is amazingly valid.

any other responsible company would see a complaint from a new user like this and try to understand the root cause.

all they need is one sentence explanation on attempted log in to explain, but no, they couldn't be bothered.

Suzi, this same arugment was given when SL was going through some technical difficulties.. so LL responded by giving everyone that was logged in around the time or something like 3500L (cant remember exactly so if you do please correct me) And what happend was the linden dollar-usd went to complete shit. Does anyone have the data for this time? I mean.. when you flood the world with money.. it creates bad things.. thats alot of system created money.. and i think they do prorate and give for outages..i remember seeing somewhere that i was credited like a dollar or something for outage.

Also, we are lucky.. eve online goes out what is it a hour a day? World of Warcraft every tuesday for several hours.. maint is what keeps the cogs turning.

c'mon Blaze! It just goes to show that nobody reads the TOS that they agree to.

So let me get this straight... You want LL to pay us for a scheduled version upgrade? Did you spoon crack on your rice krispies this morning rather than sugar? :D

Wow, that's just brought back some memories. I used to be a big fan of a UK band called The Wonderstuff who did a version of "Will the circle be unbroken" Now you've got me singing it and I'm going to have to dig out the CD with it on!

GOOD DAY TO YOU SUZI!!! :D

Have you read the Terms of Service?

Right here... http://secondlife.com/corporate/tos.php

Check this part out:

From: someone
3.8 Service Credit for Unscheduled Downtime. You will be eligible to receive Service Credit toward recurring service fees (e.g. monthly account fees, 90 Day account fees, annual account fees, and land use fees) for Unscheduled Downtime. "Unscheduled Downtime" is an unplanned or unscheduled interruption in Service availability for a period of at least twenty-four (24) hours during which you are unable to access the Service. Unscheduled Downtime is measured from the time the Service is 100% unreachable for a period of at least twenty- four (24) hours until Service is once again restored. The following are excluded from the calculation of Unscheduled Downtime: (i) scheduled maintenance downtime; (ii) problems outside of our Service (upstream providers, or your inbound connection) not affecting 100% loss to our Service; (iii) interruptions or failure of Service caused by you or your representatives (including inaccurate configuration, third-party software, abuse or over-utilization of resources, hacked servers, attacks, exploits, or server hardware failures); and (iv) causes beyond Linden's reasonable control and occurring without Linden's fault or negligence, including natural disasters, wars, terrorist acts, riots or other violent upheaval, governmental restrictions and actions, and performance failures of a third party outside Linden's control. The amount of any Service Credit will be based on the pro rata percentage of Unscheduled Downtime during your billing cycle (e.g., if there is 1 day of Unscheduled Downtime in a 30-day month for your monthly account, you will receive a Service Credit for 1/30th of your recurring service fees). Any Service Credit will be credited to you during your next billing cycle.

Pay for down time? Hell no! No one in their right mind would do that.

Pay for unplanned down time? Maybe. Some ISPs and ASPs will provide a per diem refund for unplanned, unannounced down time. However, planned down time - for upgrades, new releases, patching servers so 31337 SA Goons can't hack your viewer and steal your customer's code, is absolutely necessary.

Read the Terms of Service! :-) If they were to pay for downtime - planned - they'd just have to raise their prices to $210 per month to give us back the $15 we'd get from the downtime.

Regards,

-Flip

Haha, yeah, Linden Lab should pay me, all right. Actually, I should be paid just for hanging out in SL, while we're at it.

God forbid I enjoy the progress of an all new point release. No sir, the service better be UP AND RUNNING, or I shall demand payment in flesh!

Read the TOS
10-24-2005 14:17
Yes, I know what the TOS says. I read it. but it doesn't mean I don't have an opinion.. It doesn't mean I agree with it and it doesn't mean it can't be changed. That was my original thought. But now reading why things are the way they are I understand much better. Thanks to Flipper , Torley and Billy..
Have a good day all.
