I came from my mother's womb.

Oh. Actually... Back in about 96-98 I was playing MUCK's, the only ones I really ended up spending much time in would be FurryMUCK, SPR, and some other furry-based MUCK's I don't recall the name of - Role-playing Sonic the Hedgehog characters and storylines... I was Lucas the fox, RoboSonic/MechaSonic, and Knuckles, among other characters.

Then in 98 I quit the MUCK scene, the furry scene, and pretty much so the game scene almost entirely, save a little StarCraft and/or Halflife... Then in about 2003 I started playing Final Fantasy online... I was "Raiael", a White Mage, Beast Master, and about every other job I decided to try... On the server "Shiva"... Then about 1 year after THAT I got home from work and went to log into FF and they were doing some sort of update so I just started looking at webpages, bumbling around the net, and I think it was Slashdot where I learned about SL... And I never turned back...

Are you listening, Squaresoft? _one_ night updating/downtime is all it takes!

I joined TSO in mid-October, 2002, while it was still in beta testing. Before that, I had been beta testing Asheron's Call 2. In mid-December, 2002, I read a post on the official TSO forums (before they closed) by someone that was having trouble deciding whether or not to subscribe for TSO after the beta ended. Part of his argument was that new things, such as this might prove to be even better than TSO. Curious, I took a look at the link, and immediately signed up for "Second Life" -- although, the subscription process said I was signing up for LindenWorld.

Within a few weeks, I was in, and never looked back. Well, that's not completely true. I continued to play TSO for a few months, because SL was only open 6 hours a day back then. TSO was fun, but, nothing like SL. By August of 2003, I had cancelled my TSO account. THAT'S when I never looked back. ;)

I came from a number of places. But, this is where I call home. Its the first place in a long time I actually do consider to be a home place. The rest, can be extensions such as, Planetside (which I beta tested), TSO or WoW. Though I hardly ever go into those places now. Especially TSO ~shudder~.

Second Life, is the only place to be.

I came from PernMUSH/BelgariadMUSH/SouConMUSH/DinoMUSH/FurryMUCK/IdyllmtnMUSH/DawnSistersMUSH and a bunch of others I can't remember...

I was an avid Sims fan, but never played the online version.

I'm also a veteran of Nethack/Moria/angband etc.

No other online worlds in my past ...
10-10-2005 13:01
... unless you count text-only Yahoo Chat 1996-98, the Books & Literature rooms, where my screen name was AnnaCinders and I pretty much pwned those arenas as one-third of the Lesbian Power Trio with LuciaLibra and cssndra. Ah, the halcyon daze of yore ...

I'm not much of a gameplayer, really (except for Taboo or Scrabble IRL, and even then not so frequently), have never played a MMORPG or whatever, tend to just stand around and twiddle my thumbs in IMs if pallies Malachi or Seldon, say, are playing Greedy Greedy or Settlers or whatever ... and so this is my first 3-D virtual environment.

And it's such a wonderful place NOW that, when it improves --- like, less lag? --- I'll be constantly, I imagine, boggled by awe and joy. But maybe that's just me. Maybe I'm just easy. You know: like Sunday morning.

Welcome to SL, Atomic! And may your time here be bright and no more complex than you'd want it to be. You're among good people --- well, for the most part --- in these forums, that's for sure.

Another TSO immigrant here. Discovered SL in the TSO forums. At the time, I was waiting for There to "invite" me into beta. There might have won if they had invited me sooner. 2 weeks after I started SL beta in mid May 2003, There sent me my invitation. After a couple of weeks of SL, There didn't seem very impressive. I liked the vehicles... and that was about all I liked about There.

2-1/2 years later, I'm still here. I still own the very first parcel of land I purchased in SL. For some odd reason, I still look into TSO every few months. I don't think anyone I knew from Blazing Falls still plays TSO.

In search of a hug
10-10-2005 17:18
I played TSO for about two and a half years (Savvy Katt in Jolly Pines), before deciding there was no point in paying $9.95 a month to be bored out of my mind. I then went to There, where I spent too much money dressing up my paper doll, errr avatar. There has no hugs, which I missed, and I was curious as to why SL could have hugging, but There couldn't.
So I came to SL on a research mission, and still haven't left.

WOW... this is going a ways back in MMOGs / MMOWs... but here goes.

BBS days (MajorBBS):
InFiNiTy CoMpLeX
Galactic Empire

Early 'net:
nethack
PennMoo
PennMUD
irc (of course)

Early Web:
Virtual Places
The Palace

Early 3-D:
AlphaWorld/ActiveWorlds
WorldsChat Space Station
Worlds.com
WorldsAway

Around this time (1997) I was an attendee and panelist at User Interface '97 in Boston with the likes of Jakob Nielson and Bruce Damer, who wrote the book (back then) AVATARS!, covering ActiveWorlds and many others.

In 1997, I started working at CDnow and got really busy career wise and didn't do much stuff in online worlds / communities for six years, until November 14th, 2003. I saw an article in Slashdot on that day about Second Life allowing users IP rights to their creations and decided to check it out for a week - ONLY a week - and see how far online worlds had come.

I bought one of the lifetime accounts with 4096 about 3 days later.

Regards,

-Flip

I used to play Quake3 Arena, Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory, America's Army... that's right. I used to kill people (and monsters) for fun.

Then I discovered the pen is mightier than the sword. Or the chain gun, for that matter.

I became an SL addict in February of 2005. Shortly thereafter I became a Katt Kongo addict.

:D

I used to be in TSO as well. Hibiki in IH, AV and BF and I also had an alt named Nick Papageorgio (sp?) in those cities as well. I discovered SL via some website and decided to look at it myself and just got sucked into it and never looked back either. After trying out SL, TSO looked like 1 big colorful chatroom whereas your avatar could do tricks and make Gnomes. SL is the only place I hang out now, I have even forsaken playing/purchasing any games at all. I still need to finish Painkiller and still want to buy Half Life 2 and Doom 3 but alas, SL sucks me in everytime. :D

Hey man welcome to Second Life. I started in TSO at the end of 2003. I think I live in Interhogan and was ReallyRick. I then moved on to THERE at the beginning of 2004 and was ReallyRick there too. (see a pattern?)

I have been a party of the SL community since June of 2005 and cannot believe I did not arrive here sooner. Enjoy the world and hope to see you around!

Hey! I always thought your name sounded familiar!

I am an explorer from a distant city-building game forum at Tilted Mill. We are looking for new land on which to build cool ancient cities! I found this Second Life (ahem) nontraditional game while researching online and seeing it mentioned in Wikipedia.

Now I are a Resident! I have to "tone down" my enthusiasm when I make reports back to the home office. lol (grins)

First off, I would like to introduce myself to the community. I recently downloaded SL and got a basic account (for now). I came from TSO (The Sims Online); my main avatars there were Maxoid and Megalomaniac. I used to be a very active member of the forums there.

So that leads me to ask; where did you come from? Is this your first online game? What games did you play before SL, and are you still playing them now? What were your avatar names?

I look forward to getting to know you guys a little better. :)

I came from 3 online games. The Realm, VZones (Newhorizon) and Runescape. I got real bored with them all before coming to Secondlife. This world challenges you, and you don't have to fight rats.

I "came" from the Internet.

I guess before SL, I participated in many vw's -- mostly text-based MUSHes and MOOs where I could program and create and roleplay, etc.
