self-duplicating
10-23-2005 19:12
There was a similar self-duping script last year, when I was playing under my old account name.

I seem to remember it causing all kinds of grief then, too. I seem to remember that it was accidental. But once the user who created the self-dupper got the script started, it was pretty much impossible to stop.

Maybe we need a "generation counter" for all rezzed objects. If they rez from another object (rather than from inventory), they get a bump on the counter. When the counter gets to a certain number (5?) then they can no longer rez. Likewise, scripts that rez items should not be able to rez items indefinitely... of course, I guess the sim limit will kick in at some point and take care of the problem.

There is a generation limit it was put in place last time this happened it is 4.

But it dosn't work.

Add the Stillman sim to that list. I was working at 500m when I was bombarded by dozens of those spheres. I tried to get info on them, but before I could file an abuse report, I was booted out like everyone else.

Particle bombing to Websnake nighttshade
10-23-2005 19:33
Monte and Thundberg got bombarded by these balls as well. I wish people wouldnt particle the sims. It would be nice if the Linden lab found a way prevent particle bombing.

From: Websnake Nightshade
So, I come back from being AFK, to find my parcel of land completley layered in little physical balls with G-Man (Halflife2) on them, so I do what any intelligent resident would do, greif reported....at least..I tried to. I then realize that the whole sim was down just looking at the minimap (the red tint stuff gets when the sim crashes). So I took the oppurtunity to look around, these werent just in my parcel, they were EVERYWHERE. Now, same with everyone else, I cant log back in. Out of boredom until the grid is back up, I petition we make a list of all the sims hit with this.

Greifer Name: Ol Fitzarraldo

Griefer Item Name: GriefSpawn RC3 redo (Redux? I saw redo..)

Texture/Shape: Gman Face (Reports of other images as well, including stereotypical racist images), .25 m sphere

Contains the scripts: Rezzer (no copy) (no transfer), Particles (no copy) (no transfer)

Contains the objects: GriefSpawn RC3 redo (Redux?)

List of Sims Hit:
Keener
Telea
Uba
Ess
Baird
Eilibia

I speculate how this was done...

It is impossible for one person to spawn these in every sim all at once, so I speculate that there was a temporary rezzer placed high above each sim and timed days before this occured. These rezzers were either placed manually or rezzed automatically and moved globally to the center of each sim. The way described by the people experiencing these attacks describe as the spheres raining from the sky, so I can only think this is how it was done.

You'd be wrong.

Pretty simple to just have an object self-replicate.

Self replication
10-23-2005 22:08
You know...if you just make a shape self replicate, it will usually just fill the sim and stop reproducing. At that point it's usually easy to delete.

To make something self replicate WAY past prim limits takes a very easy and deliberate trick (which I won't recount here) to go into numbers higher than the prim limit of a sim.

For it to happen in so many sims at once is nothing but a vicious attack.

And for the record.. we still need to get LF zombies on and island and have some fun! You know.. FUN.. what SL should be.. when you're not monotizing of course.

hmm if we can make the zombies eat the flying fish.. and fish eat the lemmings.. and lemmings eat the zombies we can have an eco system!

You may have something there. I regularly houseclean my properties for unwanted objects left by others (usually daily) and over the last few days did notice that a single object owned by the same AV appeared in three different sims, unfortunately I didn't note the name of the AV in question.

And none of them have been affected by this nonsense.

Moral: keep your house in order! ;-)

Yes, however, a self replicating object is not able to reach island sims, and I have heard that some of those happened to be attacked.

not many adventures happening in SL

Livigno brightly survived to it, just the space server took it down

Absolutely not. We must not cripple valuable functionality because it is occasionally misused by a griefer. To be consistent you would have to limit physical object speed to prevent abuse of guns, and have to kill pushes altogether.

I have automatic builders which script-rezz and autoassemble structures, which rely on this functionality.

I also have self-replicators, but as a responsible scripter I build in not only a "die" command, but my own limits on both the number of allowable replications, and their geographic extent, matched to each particular use.

This is the same as buying a gun, and being sufficiently responsible never to abuse or inconvenience others with it.

Griefing is griefing, and almost always involves abusing or perverting facilties or rules which cannot be reduced/tightened without damaging legitimate use. How often has this happened ?

This is like some aspects of the Patriot Act. Let's diminish or abandon some of the very rights and freedoms and personal protections our ancestors long fought (and uncomplainingly took casualties) for, in order to reduce the likelihood of attack by very very few, with likely attack casualty rates infinitesimal compared with, for example, current road accidents. Hysteria. Throwing the baby out with the bathwater.

If such griefing in SL became frequent, I am sure we could design countermeasures off our own bat, without curtailing scripter's current freedom. But I see no reason to believe it will be necessary.

As much as I agree that putting limitations in SL for the sole purpose of tentatively restrict abuse is a bad idea, I think the servers should at least not allow to be put in an unstable situation. There's only so much these servers can handle, thus they should not be able to go beyond.

Totally valid for LL to consider whether they can improve server-level protections. But not by any simplistic limitation on existing functionality for individual scripts. Functionality with valid application, and on which scripters are currently relying. Not by anything as crude and damaging as what the poster proposed.

Not to even consider how most schemes I can imagine could probably be readily circumvented by the ill-intentioned. I could easily give each replicant a random name of its own, for example. Or a even randomised appearance. No object need rezz more than two others. Heard of the grains of wheat on the chessboard ?

Fortunately script kiddies (I mean the troublemaking script kiddies) are usually too arrogant to hide their tracks that well: his name was all over his objects.
Isn't that consolation only to the slightly naive, Leigh ? You think this likely to be a name, or an identity, or on a creditcard, or at an address, or from an ip number, any of which the perpetrator cared about LL banning? On the contrary, tracks could well be covered perfectly. Unfortunately. That's the problem.

this is the second time there was, um, allegations of credit card fraud directed at certain groups

do you really think (and maybe not you directly, but anyone) that people who are part of a rowdy community forum are involved with an identity theft ring in order to grief SL?

cost/benefit

I'm sure it was just some performance art, guys. ;)

Please don't say it was that. It will give the "Performance Artists" a bad name; and I've only just started it up!

Gee, Mulch. I never dreamed of alleging or even suggesting any such thing. Just that if I planned a serious griefing attack worthy of permabanning, like this one, I would be sure to create a one-off avatar for the purpose. Borrowing the credit card of a pal who would never want to join, for instance. After all, such an identity now comes free, and can be killed even before it's banned.

One of our vulnerabilities, I'm afraid........

I was next to U Kneek in Isere when the attack came... thanks to that lag monster, Isere actually withstood the attack for at least 10 minutes.

alright, no pun intended. I wasn't around to see this ball thing, but when I logged on I had a message from my house doors saying Griefspawn RC3 redo had tried to enter my house in Laka. (I get this anytime something rolls up to my door or someone tries to get in not on my admit list).
