Greetings from the SLCC 2006 Team! Linden Lab have been kind enough to donate four simulators for the in-world portion of the 2006 Second Life Community Convention. One of these will remain the beautiful garden that already exists, however, we're looking for individuals from the community to send us proposals for a build for the other three. Depending on the number and quality of proposals we receive, we may accept one, or more than one; we're open to any ideas coming from the community, as well as teams of people working together. We are willing to pay for your hard work in US$, but keep in mind, we are still a small team of non-profit volunteers with a limited budget to work with. There are a few logistical requirements we'll make clear from the outset: (1) We'd like each of the 3 simulators to have a sizable viewing area with seating. This will include a large view screen and stage for the video being streamed from the live event in San Francisco, and the avatars of those currently on stage. (2) The seating near the screen would ideally be "within earshot", or 20 meters or so. We want people to be able to chat with those on stage to provide a truly interactive experience. This will allow people to chat in text while listening to the audio from the Convention itself. (3) Sponsors will require space within the three simulators as well, depending on their sponsorship level. These guidelines and sponsors will be given to the building teams in advance so the sponsor's spaces can be logically integrated with the build. Also, the view screen area will need space around it for sponsor's billboard prims. (4) A Ventrilo server will be opened between the two locations at appropriate times, allowing from questions and answers in audio for people unable to attend the Convention in real life. While this won't affect the build directly, it is important to remember that we are putting forth a large effort to improve on last year and integrate the SL/RL experience even more so. (5) Builders will have access to the sims from August 5th to August 21st. Major building should be completed by August 12th. (Parts can be built in advance in other locations, and kept in inventory, then assembled) Other than that, here's how to submit a proposal: (1) Write up a proposal, explaining what you'd like to build, how much space you will require. (2) Please include details of the theme, and how the video screen will be built in while generating a beautiful, professional, fun build. (3) Include your price in US$. (4) Please submit your proposals via email to SLCC2006@gmail.com and I'll forward them along to the team. (5) Proposals must be received by July 23rd, 2006. Also, if you'd like to submit a creation for the Design Showcase, contact Jennyfur Peregrine in world. The design expo is going to display the history of content creation in Second Life, from 2002 through 2006. More details are available here: http://www.SLConvention.com/design/Regards, -The SLCC 2006 Organizational Team

Take a look at the Warmouth infohub stage that I built... a larger version of that but with a video screen included wouldn't take too long.
Is that the sort of thing that you're looking for?

Lewis We're not looking for anything in particular other than what was stipulated in the first post.

We really don't want to put more restrictions on it than necessary; what we're hoping to get out of this is as many imaginative ideas as possible from the wonderful SL community. Thanks! -Flip

does this mean that Fort Mason (Cowell Theater) won't be recreated in SL?
also, the design showcase has sounded pretty cool.. maybe it would help if there were a visible link to that page from anywhere on the SLCC site? perhaps an additional button at the top, "Design Showcase"? although that would interrupt the visual flow of the pages.. so maybe just a more prevelant short explanation of it and the associated link in their own paragraph?
just trying to think of a way to make it more visual to the community..
also, i'm "sticky-ing" this thread so as to make it highly visible to the community at large, for it is their help that is needed to make all of this happen in a relatively short period of time.

While doing the NYLS build last year was incredibly cool, we wanted to open up the possibilities of the in-world build to the limitless imagination of the community. Thanks for the sticky - and throwing a few more links on the web site to the design competition is probably a good idea. Regards, -Flip

Regards, -Flip That made more sense because it was also entered in the State of Play design competition thingy. It really wasn't functional as far as the actual SLCC on-site viewing. I'm sure the Fort Mason Center is kewl and all, but I dunno if we necessarily need a scale version in world.

While you're at it, how about UNstickying that PvP thread at the top? We've got PvP abuse back in the client now.

From: FlipperPA Peregrine That is correct. Just making sure, since we packed 4 sims last year and SL has grown from 70,000 to 350,000 residents, and the real convention has grown from 150 attendees to 450 projected.

right on..

i can see where the sense of last years model doesn't equate with doing the same thing this year, plus.. like you said Flip.. it would be nice to see what unhidered creations might pop up!
(*scratches head* ..now i'll have to figure something else out for "non-pictured" nametags)

(*scratches head* ..now i'll have to figure something else out for "non-pictured" nametags) I'm wondering if technologically speaking we could set-up repeaters as a back up in case the SLCC sims get full. If Linden Lab thinks 4 sims should be enough to support the SLCC in world events before and during the convention then I can't argue too much. While there has been a lot of squawking about the lack of community involvement there really hasn't been an outpouring of involvement or concern in any of the community based things going on. So I suspect that 4 sims will be more than enough when it comes to the builds and what not.

Respectfully, I beg to differ. Perhaps because you have been only an organizer for the last two months of this, or perhaps simply I've heard from people you haven't, or perhaps simply because you indeed have had to take a lot of aggressive forum crap and simply are skewed in viewpoints (all valid reaons), I definitely have seen another side. - Myself and other developers have been maintaining regular contact about the SLCC in-world build over the last 3 months. We were told we were waiting on Linden Lab to approve a donation. - I've also *personally* gotten dozens of IMs over the last several months inquiring about the in-world build volunteering or volunteering in general. I have always passed along interested candidates to Jerry and Flip, because at the time they were the primary stated organizers. (Before more organizers joined in.) - I have seen several posts asking for a variety of ways to directly obtain community feedback, and while it's debateable whether or not they were in good spirit, they certainly qualify as "concern" as you stated there lacked. Repeaters are certainly a plan B, but I think almost everyone agrees that repeaters are simply not the immersive experience as is being *at* an event. Please, don't take this personally - this is questioning what Linden Lab's thought processes are, not yours. My immediate guess is, "4 sims was good enough for the anniversary, it's good enough for SLCC" - but that's my guess.

Four sims was more than enough for the third birthday party, because there was very little there of actual interest, and the few events that did go on were as laggy as hell anyway. I don't see this little gathering as being any different.
Let's also not forget that these are being donated, free of charge, whereas anyone else would be paying thousands of dollars for the privilege. I guess it's all down to who you know.

Lewis: I'm confounded by your logic. Four sims was more than enough, yet "the few events that did go on were as laggy as hell anyway" - doesn't that mean there were not enough sims to handle the load? Avatars create more server-side and client-side lag than anything else in SL except items created to exploit holes in the system intentionally to create lag. Spreading avatars out - as was done with the BBC Radio Fest on four sims - really does help cut the lag down and make the experience much more smooth. While I'm extremely grateful for any donation to the cause, Hiro does bring up valid points about the growth of SL. Jennyfur's idea about repeaters - or even just allowing the stream to be re-broadcast on private land - is not a bad idea at all either. I'm not sure the three usable sims will be able to support enough people, but as I said, I don't want to appear ungrateful at all. Having the video and audio feed available at other destinations is possible, but that undermines the two-way immersive nature of the event, since the only in-world broadcast to RL will be from the Linden donated sims. Hiro: I think Jennyfur was speaking directly about her experience with trying to get community involvement in the Design Expo. After all the clamoring for more opportunities for anyone in the community to be involved without having to be organizing the whole sha-bang, she's gotten a total of five submissions. Regards, -Flip

Regards,
-Flip Make that eight whole submissions. I guess I will have to start bugging my designer friends to submit stuff and then zOMG it will then be accused of being a FIC fest.

Lewis I have to disagree. When I went, there were dozens and dozens of users in each of the four sims, and I was there for a span of a few hours, during the protest and parade.
