Why is it that as soon as someone buys land, their first instinct is to build a split-level family home with a white picket fence?
This is a land of pure imagination, and this is the best we can do?
I think TV has murdered our brains.

If you think that is the worst they can do wait around awhile. The first thing most people do is to chop down all of the trees so they can have a barren wasteland to put their club or shop on that might last a few weeks if they are lucky.

Different strokes for different folks. Also, sometimes people start out making ordinary houses before they move on to more interesting things. Another thing is that people make their dream house - the house they wish they could have in real life. For many people suburbia is a unattainable dream. Another 'nother thing - it's fun to appreciate the seemingly ordinary, especially with the virtual twist. I am happy when anyone tries with their true heart to build something they like.

Check out this sim. Owned by governor Linden. It's cool! Looks like Levittown. All the houses are listed as sold, and two or three have been occupied and customized. Unfortunately, the customized ones are hideous. I don't know how these prefab homes were sold, I'd be curious to hear if anyone has any info about this area.

Perhaps they live in a tiny apartment in a high rise apartment building surrounded by other high rise apartment buildings and being in a separate dwelling with a yard is something they've wanted for a long long time, so it's fun to pretend to be in one.
Or perhaps they want an innocuous cover for the torture chamber in the basement. Possibly it has something to do with presence of free split level houses and picket fences. _____________________

It's also nice building practice to create something easily broken down to its components....ie basic and familiar shapes.

If you dont like it, dont look at it.
Who are we to judge what anyone else's dreams are? Ive never had any land. The first building I made was basically a split level house. They are simple to make. That and there are freebies out there. Who knows why people do what they do? I have a lot of questions about behaviour i find odd, but I also have a live and let live attitude. |

I sort of like the ordinary among the extrordinary... But yeah, I do sort of wish that people would put some sort of "Themselves" into their prefab houses, either by getting themed furnature they like, put up photographs inside, even having your lawn practically a forest of linden trees. At least, that's what I'd do.

People are still fascinated with trying to make a virtual place feel real or in trying to imitate what they've seen in books, movies, and games. Eventually originality will break out here and there.
