Makes that whole walking away gesture kinda meaningless, don't it? One of my favorite lines from "All About Eve".... When Eve opens the door and tells Addison DeWitt to "Get out": "You're too short for that gesture." Now: "You're too lagged for that gesture."

From: Meka Rakosi While probably annoying if you don't know someone, because its like nagging someone for their phone number, but whats so bad about asking people you know this?
As in response to why asking someone for their Skype (any other msg service) is 'wrong' is most definitely because (in my experience & how I meant it in this thread) it was usually preceeded or followed by: 1. "have a webcam?" or 2. "wanna cyber?" Which were my other two "things not to say in world." Other than that, yeah - it is a great way to communicate with the SL community. But someone combining them with the other two questions/just meeting you - is a bit creepy to me personally. I have another that happened to me the other day... "Go away! Leave us alone!" - and they were on land owned by me I have to admit I got a giggle out of it rofl.

From: Joshua Nightshade When I joined two years ago people were able to maintain the reality of this being a game, not an actual world, and thus didn't flip out when you made reference to said reality. Now I got screamed at the first day I came back and asked how old someone was because that's "not a SL appropriate question." Jeez, give me a break. It's not unreasonable to be bothered by questions about one's RL. Unless a resident is looking for a date outside of SL, I don't see any reason he/she needs to know RL info. I only give RL info to my closest friends, and that only after I've gotten to know them really well. It's not being rude or avoiding reality, it's just that it has no bearing on your life in SL.

*chuckles* You know, I knew it wasn't a place I really wanted to try and hang out at when I went to this supposedly "popular" club, and within five minutes of walking in and standing there I not oinly get spammed with about 35 of those dang "XXXXxxHOWLXXX" thingies, but then some guy PMs me with "where r u from"... *sigh* Where is the Roleplay (that doesnt' involve sex or slavery!) And I'm a bit of a newbie, but I have one to add.. PMed to me the othre day while I was talking with a group of us hanging out at this particular fantasy sim (not dirty..hehe), and someone who was new who was trying to "fit in" (at lesat that is what he kept saying) "Why r the rules so strict when this place doesn't even exist in RL?" I replied that I had no clue what he was talking about, as the rules never bothered me .

Annoying N00b stuffz ...
08-22-2006 13:56
I don't appreciate un-reciprocated IM's, the HI w/no follow up, response, introduction or relevance is annoying but fair warning that the person IM'ing me probably won't provide me with a new interesting person to get to know. So it's like a PMRC sticker that says "Dull person here, avoid"
I had a rough time getting going as a n00b, I kept NOT meeting folks and so I was poking around (literally) in the dark and lag, getting very frustrated. So when I meet new folks that are trying to find their way, I'm interested in helping them join the larger SL community.
However that doesn't mean I'm interested in spending time with fools of the non-entertaining type.
Stuff folks have said that ranks highly on my wtf-meter usually involve the instant begging for money, bragging about being a griefer, walking in the door/entering chat range and hitting on women in the worst, most clumsy variation of the Jake Blues "how much for your women, the little girl?" restaurant scene.
I've heard "This is stupid, you can't kill anyone. There's no goals or prizes!", and wonder what website they looked at when they spent an hour d/ling software.
I've been asked if I'm an NPC just a few times, however there was one fellow who got very angry with me for "not" being one and insisting that I wasn't one. He didn't think it was possible that I'd have the answers to his questions and be a regular player. He was only asking typical and reasonable newbie questions about altering clothing, opening boxes, getting around etc.
Still not sure why that ticked him off so much, but I was cracking up at the thought of it.
I usually tell folks SL is very much like RL, you get out of it what you put in. And if that excites someone and makes them interested, I figure they'll do ok. If they think that's stupid and that money and stuff should just come to them, I figure they're not long for this (SL) world and hope they find a simplistic game that will stoop to their nanite-sized intellect, leaving resources free for the rest of us!

Things not to say. 1. "Hi" (please say more then this cuz most people don't know what you want if all you say is hi) 2. "Where i get guns!" (Please use question marks when asking a question, and also a complete sentance would be nice) 3. "YIFFY!!! ^.^" (just kidding i love that gesture. ) 4. "when you leave can i have your stuff?" (hell no it goes with me) 5. "WOW a doggy person!"

Also things newbies need to not say.
1. "Can i have a copy of your hair/tail?" (Most things are no transfer... And cost money!) 2. "Can i have some money?" (Sure some people will give you it but most probably you wont get much by panhandling except a ban or 2 :/) 3. "Where do i find this or that?" (the toolbar on the bottom of the screan has a button on it called "Search" which can help you with this)

"Can I have a copy/trans version if this shirt to give to my clan members?" The shirt was part of a $65L ($0.52) AV.

I'm Sorry!

From: Didge Undertone Dear Mrs. Shadowdog Tiger,
The above quote nearly got me fired due to the mass extrusion of liquids from my nose onto the keyboard from which I now type.
Thank you for the humor.
Ever Yours, Didge Undertone Dearly Darling, I'm so sorry! Can you tell your boss it was just Grand Ma having a senior moment and saying things she shouldn't?! Ever Yours, Mrs Showdog Tiger

If you are that pissed off with people saying ASL, port to Eosn, then port up to ASL, make a landmark and give it to them, making sure it clearly says 'ASL'

I only give RL info to my closest friends, and that only after I've gotten to know them really well. It's not being rude or avoiding reality, it's just that it has no bearing on your life in SL. This is my point. If YOU choose to be Lord Of All Knowledge Relating To My Real Life then by all means, if I asked you how old you were, be as snarky as you choose. But it's the dictation that "it has no bearing on your life in SL" as if you're Lord and Goddess of the SL Bearings is what ticks me off. Two years ago, when I started, such a question would get an answer appropriate to the question itself and not a defensive, offended remark as if I'd asked you how big your penis is. This paranoia is a new development as far as I'm concerned and I find it exceptionally stupid. I have my personal website in my signature and SL profile, which, incidentally is my real name. While I know not everyone is so free with their info as I, if I were to ever come across someone who was otherwise a reasonable individual but got defensive when I asked them details about their real life I would assume the individual is shady and/or underage and that would be the end of our interaction immediately.

From: Jack Harker This is when you ban them. Well obviously, but I rarely ban people that quickly. First I point out that I DO own the land. I only freeze/eject & ban after at least one warning. I've actually seen people on several occasions being rude or greifing, only to find out that their victims include two estate managers and three land owners

I wasn't meaning to be snarky at all. If you're fine with sharing personal info, that's great. Speaking for myself, I'm not. My age, my geographic location, etc. shouldn't affect how you relate to me. Neither of those things has anything to do with my Second Life, so I see no reason to make them public knowledge. I'm pretty sure there are others who feel that way as well... which is all I was pointing out.

But you made a generalization about what was appropriate to ALL of SL and made it seem as if I was somehow an outlier. In my own dealings I haven't seen that to be the case. I don't mind what people personally feel as far as what they share on SL but when they say "This is how ALL of SL behaves and you're a freak" that bugs me. Especially when it's not true. But I didn't take any personal offense from you and hopefully vice versa.

From: Loki Pico I thought this would be easy, but I got stumped too soon, so add to the list. These are things you should not say because they are socially awkward, a conversation killer, or outs the speaker as, teh noob. Basic "how to" questions should be excluded, because we all been there I will start... "Where are you from?" "Can I have a copy of that?" "Furries are gay." I've said all those things

"Is x your alt?" or "Are you an alt?" "What are the names of your alts?"
I also hate "you do how this [object], message [place], [object] was ?" (From someone learning english) I would not have gotten upset if it was not a series of IM's with me trying to clarify what he was asking. In the end I gave up. Please simplify the question.
"Can I take a picture of you for Something Awful" Said from neighboring property while I was busy building and testing *cough* items.
