Welcome to SL... Sl is the most fun when out exploring and seeing other peoples creativity... especially if it inspires your own... most people you will find are pleasent and enjoy helping newbs... some however are here to create stress... best bet is talk to a few elder residents and explore... that will give you the ability to decide if SL is the place you wanna hang out with friends.

Also dont get into alot of buying anything yet... one you most likely dont have alot of money in SL and you will find enough people out there giving you things that your inventory will be full of enough things to sort without adding to it with your own buying

ah cool im a newb then! :)

Are people generally friendly in the game, or have you got too be very cautious?

Ohh yeah, But you won't get talked to alot , to meet people you have to do the meeting, Trust meh when I say, They don't come to you. Well soon they will, once you meet alot of people. Umm, not sure if that helps, but good luck anyway and remember, Have fun!

Someday they will come up with an Idea. This idea, will make them not screw up everytime. And then we will all be like ZOMG it works. The end.

Hi,

Find a really rich fairy god-mother to hook you up!

~donk~ (sound of reality biting)

Like that's going to happen. There are no such thing as fairies. Or are there?

Seriously, there are soooo many things to explore, find, do, meet, and the more time you do all of the above, the more fun it will be.

For the most part, you can get hooked up with help fairly easily. SL has official type people in various roles, like Mentors for instance, to get you general information. They also have several official places to get started. In addition, there are some great people who have spent some of their time/money/assets on setting up zones that are newbie friendly. Yadni's yardsale is paramount. There is also a Gnubie store that has sponsors from all over SL offering a few items from their supplies for very reasonable cost.

Even if you have *nothing* when you arrive, that likely won't last. Reach out. Say hi.

Who knows. You might even find a fairy god-mother.

jes

hi dean, welcome!

yes, you can own objects and handle money without going premium, although acquiring money for nothing is harder to do.

a lot of non-premium account people just buy their linden dollars through various currency exchange services, and even 5USD worth of linden dollars will buy you a lot of spending power. premium is really only a must if you're going to own land somewhere - wait a while and get the lay of the land before taking that step - there's plenty of other fun to be had!

Yes, don't read the forums on update day. People tend to get a bit doom-laden. ;)

Welcome to SL Dean! And on a Wednesday. Oh dear. :D

I've only been here about a month, but I can tell you I have had a blast playing. I find that one of the easiest ways to meet friendly people is to simply be friendly.

I do not mean "Hi, let's cyber" friendly, but even just a simple "Hello" is a great start. Ask questions - lots of people are willing to help out as long as you do not seem to be taking up an excessive amount of time. Politeness and condsideration of others seem to go a long way here just like RL.

Albion

There is more action here on update day than any other time of the week - best day to look in here (well it will be until the Lindens committ the ultimate fuckup and kill the forums).
