Moreso, where is the post saying things are broken in the first place? All I see is that "Drum circle with Philip in his 'Jumped the shark' shirt" after two refreshes.

Obviously nothing is wrong, everything is fine, and there are no problems with Second Life. As there are no problems being posted about!

EDIT: Okay, Torley just posted "I just posted this in-game" and the exact announcement that was posted.
Obviously nothing else is wrong because nobody else has spoken up.

Who wants to read it here? I want to read it where nobody can leave any comments because we're too "unruly" to be allowed to say what we want. :(

Actually, if I were brand new, I would look for a Grid Status link right on the secondlife.com main page. Oh, what do you know! THERE IS ONE! Why dig down into the forums when you can go to the main site? I know you don't want the forums to close, but really... you're grasping at straws now.

http://secondlife.com/status/

I agree, though - it is a crying shame that this status message can't be flooded with a thousand posts with people screaming for the Lindens to fix it, as if the notion had never crossed their minds.

The part i don't get is why can't the SL client itself pull the 'grid status message' of sorts from predefined url (where the LL could put the status updates) ... instead of this whole 'jump here to check or maybe just there now oh wait we moved the page elsewhere recently again' thing. o.O;

Here as in on this website, not in some blog somewhere. /status works..as would a direct link as Joannah spoke about. Not snaking through to a blog!

Well, the problem is two-fold, Chronic.

A. There generally isn't a grid message until it has been taken off line. Occasionally there will be a message in announcements (also slated for removal as far as I can tell) that the grid is experiencing difficulty.

B. This game, more than any other game, website, or platform shoes on earth, is incredibly tricky to figure out whether it is your computer or something that is happening to everyone.

Having a place to come to like this, in immediate real-time, meant a person could know not to panic and it wasn't just him.

Plus - exactly how do the Lindens figure out that things aren't working optimally in the first place? I figure partly from seeing all the posts in General that things don't seem to be working.

coco

P.S. And yes, this idea of going to a BLOG for information about the status of the grid (I just did it) is just nuts.

(Not to mention that you don't even GET to the blog from the thing at the very bottom of the SL front page; you just get a sort of black-and-white message. You get details only if you know to check announcements.)

Blogs make perfect sense from the LL point of view....they dont have to listen to us (the customer) respond.

Damned irritating customers, ruining their corporate fun - how dare we have expectations of them?

You don't have to go to the blog at all. There is a status link right on the main site and at the bottom of every page, just like every other service that would require there to be a network status link. This is standard practice, and the first place people should be looking for a status link. It also makes the message crystal clear without it being buried in "OMGWTF the gr1d is down fuken LL duzzent know wut their doing FIX IT FICXC IT!!111!!11!" posts.

Also, they mention that it is network failure - which strikes me as being unforseen, and quite difficult to post a warning previous to the failure.

Okay! But you don't have to go to the blog for it. I am just telling everyone that there is a link from the main site, exactly where there should be one. This will tell you the general status, and if you want more details, then you can hit the blog.

I don't believe I suggested that they are supposed to post warnings previous to difficulties.

I also believe I said that I had already gone to the link at the bottom of the page. I believe I pointed out that if you want more details, you then have to "snake around," as another user put it so aptly, to find them on a blog.

You really have a very low opinion of the residents, don't you.

I wish LL would believe that as well! Maybe they will do an RSS and we can get the updates that way?

I for one am not going to keep going to a blog to 'read the updates' and whatever else they want to dish out there, they also have a place we can leave comments....why not just keep the forums, how lame is that?!

This is already possible. Add the blog's RSS feed to your reader. I did this a week ago.

Look, I am not trying to be a champion of the blogs here - but it just seems that people don't WANT to find the information that is plainly available unless it's in these forums.

It's not hard to get to the blogs.

The URL is pretty easy to remember: blog.secondlife.com .

Make a bookmark or favorite as the term might be.

Or get an RSS reader and read the blogs and comments in there.

As for that plainly available information, no, I don't think so.

First of all, I don't know how to add an RSS feed and I don't know what my reader is.

But let's say that everybody else does.

Even so, something passes off the first page of the blog in record time. You have to know who wrote it, or what topic it was filed under, in order to find it again. (Which is very good, by the way, for burying those pesky reader comments.)

Yet again, it's a case of taking something simple and straightforward and useful that everybody knows how to use, and turning it into something more complex and less user-friendly.

*nods*

I don't even have to be on a SL related website to see the latest blog additions. I just click the live bookmark for the blog's RSS feed to see a dropdown list of all new entries.

OK, grid status in three easy steps:

1. Go to http://www.secondlife.com
2. Scroll down (or look down, depending on resolution)
3. Click on "Grid Status"

I am sorry, but this cannot be any easier.

Again... the in-world message said go to the blogs

while I am savvy enough to check all lines of communications. some of the newer players are not.

Coco, if the grid status falls from near the very top of the blog while there are still problems to the point that even the newbiest of the newbs actually has to go digging for it, then I will definitely apologise and retract my words.

Chronic, for the third time, I did this.

I pointed out that the link on the bottom of the page takes you to a brief statement. (Did you read that part?)

Getting to the blog, where more details and updates are given, requires you to go to announcements.

Which I believe are supposed to be eliminated.

The updates used to appear on announcements, not as a note on the announcements telling you to check the blog.

I am sorry, I was under the impression that the in-world message said to go to http://blog.secondlife.com - please excuse me.

And I see what you mean about the link to Announcements - it should not even point to the forum at all. I am going to suggest to a Linden that they point it directly to the blog.

Not knowing how to get and install an RSS reader results from the choices made by the person who doesn't know. The information is readily available. Just type "RSS" into a search engine and read some of the links.
