Could you be a slightly more antagonistic?
From: Jeska Linden
We have just kicked everyone off of the grid due to a system-wide problem, possibly due to Resident action.
Sure maybe someone pulled off another griefball attack today, but you don't really have to be so open about your contempt for your customers, do you?

Hmm. I doubt he meant anything at all by it. But even I gave thought when I wrote a post in another thread and started to say, "then we were kicked off" and changed it to, "then the game went down."

But then, not everybody is writer.

how not to inflame customers
11-10-2005 18:38
I posted hastily, let me see if I can make this a little more clear:
  1. You have a goodly number of customers who have cause to be irritated with SL service over the last few weeks
  2. You've recently had a grid-killing "griefball" attack that was pretty well publicized
  3. There are numerous, pretty obvious, gridwide attack methods that are not too hard to conjure up if motivated
  4. Linden Lab is probably pretty irritated over the 1.7 hassles and the associated bad karma
All that could prompt the rather contemptuous "possible resident action" claim. You folks are human, too.

However, the one thing that I can guarantee will only exacerbate ill-will between your customer base and LL is to come out with contemptuous finger pointing as you've just engaged in. If the grid had to be taken down for any reason, just say that; you don't put out fires with gasoline.

Oh come on - contempt? Jeska was very polite about it considering the event. "Possibly due to resident action" is waaaay more polite than I would've been.

How about pointing some of that toward the f*cktard that started this instead of the ones who are attempting to fix it and are probably not all that happy at the prospect of having to stay at work until 11pm??

How do you get contempt out of "possibly due to resident action"? Christ, if they just said the Grid was going down, then every other thread in General would be about WHATS GOING ON and THEY NEVER TELL US ANYTHING and SL IS UNSTABLE and NICE PATCH ASSHOLES and on and on and friggin' on.

Sounds like they're actually trying to give us a little information like we're always screaming at them to. I sincerely doubt they hold their entire customer base responsible for one or two griefer's actions, unlike some of us to do LL themselves.

"Possibly due to resident action" is the sort of information I want to know.

I usually agree with a lot of what you have to stay Malachi, but I think you are way off here ;)

I still don't see the contempt, Malachi - maybe in your post, but not in Jeska's response. I figured people would be happy she led on to that little tid-bit - at least then they could blame some f*ckhead instead of doing the usual LL bashing.

All that could prompt the rather contemptuous "possible resident action" claim.
  • [/list]

The wording is nothing to be offended over. "Possibly due to resident action" hardly smacks of contempt.

Now, if the wording had been "Possibly due to some chunderhead customer who thinks it's funny to cook up malicious scripts", I would be slightly put off.

But only *slightly*. And for, oh, maybe two seconds, because I'd totally agree with the sentiment.

WHY must these griefing fleshwastes keep futzing with the grid? STOP IT ALREADY AND GO PLAY IN TRAFFIC. X(

    Hi!

"Everyone" getting kicked off does mean EVERYONE. I was in-world too. *smile*

So ... you can see me putting a "Kick Me" sign and kicking myself. But I kick gently!

The announcement has since been updated with what happened.

Thanks for your patience, I really do mean it, I know how much you all want to get back in SL!

    A noob perspective
    11-10-2005 18:54
I've only been in SL for a month but the single biggest complaint I keep hearing over and over is that LL does not communicate what's going on or what they are doing or why they are doing it.

Then when they do they are called contemptuous?

Any of you ever moderate a forum or run a MUD or anything along those lines?

You are damned if you do, and damned if you don't. Eventually all the complaining is just a dull roar in the background. I don't know the original poster so I can't say if s/he is a habitual hothead, but c'mon joe, give em a break. I was glad to know what they suspected and why they pulled the grid down.

And I'd like to see the resident response to those kinds of messages _encourage_ them to be more informative in the future, not less.

Thanks for the attention to this thread, Altruima. SL downtime has a way of making people go bezerk, including me. ;)

Well to be fair, I would accuse you all of murder if I had the chance, just because I could. So LL saying that a resident did cause a grid problem when a resident did cause a grid problem is being a little soft. You're all lucky your not class 2 sex offenders right now.
