Which do you have? Which do you recommend for or against, and why? Which has the best featureset? Which is the most resistant to shield-breakers?
So far I'm aware of Sion (which I have), and aubreTec and DFSS (which I don't have.) What others are out there?

I normally dont deal with shields that much. The best defense against any kind weapon is a single prim...sit on it Edit: Although I can think of a shield that involves the avatar sitting on a prim...with a simple walk animation in it...and it glows a pretty blue color when it is shot. Plus it can also attack. I dont remember the name of it. I think you can buy it at Galatic Mall or someplace...

I've never seen a shield that was at all useful against shield breakers. The only one that worked was the phantom and that's since been patched. hehe, If you want a shield though, sit on a non physical prim and script it to move you in some semblance of a normal way. I think that makes you pretty much untouchable.

Sion is crap. Go with Powershield or Protec.

Oh, I know about "sit" shields that make you immune to push. I'm talking about the "keeping you from getting killed over damage land" kind.
Jonas, what about Powershield and Protec? How do they beat Sion?

There's not a single PvP shield that isn't totally raped by a half dozen Crusader rounds. edit: Well, except for the lame stuff that uses Phantom-like sploits to prevent collision events.

Shields are for wimps
06-06-2006 19:01
There is no way to make it so you can't be killed. No shield is unbeatable, and the "sit on a prim" thing only works against lower class weapons. I have yet to find a person that I could not kill, no matter what shield combo they used. And I have seen them all really. Sure some are a bit harder to kill than others, but you can still kill them.
Bottom line: tactics are waaaay more important than shields. I don't even use one. They are just a waste of money in opinion, since I can kill an av no matter what shield they use.

Some of us would call the auto targetting hud based kill/mega orbiters "lame" too though I'm all for restarting the shields vs guns arms race again, its gone a bit stale in the months after phantom.. (that, and that accursed shieldbreaker bullet.)

Shields are cute and definitely useful against the silly shit that pushes you to 10,000m, but ultimately it's tactics that make success or failure.

Ahh... now the name rings a bell. Owner of Templar botworks, creator of the siegebot and more recently crusader. Had a lot of fun with those

Maybe best not to bother

If what you want is a way to *win* in a damage enabled sim then shop around all you like, but you won't find anything that's unbreakable I don't reckon. Your best bet is to get the top notch weapons surely. Fry the sucka that tries to fry you and there's no need for a shield right? However, if you're trying to keep yourself free of grief attacks while building/scripting then as the earlier posts said, sit on it! (spin if you like, depends upon your target omega ) I'm sure the weapon vs shield market is quite profitable, but the lack of any sort of punishment for dying in a death enabled sim (due to instant teleport) would certainly make me think twice about buying a shield. Just my 2cents, feel free to disagree. I don't want any arguments, as I'm quite drunk. Dave

Shields are useful against griefers but far from foolproof, and proTech is about as good as you're going to get. In, say, Rausch, shields are nearly useless. But if you just need day-to-day anti-griefer protection, a good shield will stop a typical bullet that might otherwise have been a problem for you.

Are griefers really that much of a problem outside the combat sim to justify the cost of a shield? I can count on one hand the number of times I have been "griefed" in the 16 months I have been in SL.
Wearing a shield all the time just adds to lag.

SL has "rough neighborhoods" that are sometimes still good to visit. I have shielding and consider it money well-spent as it has helped a number of times. But that's just me, I suppose.

Shields are useless if your going up against a nuker/orbiter etc, but they are good for the lower rung fighters ; ). Honestly I like protec just cause it lets me know who's shooting at me, and the interceptors usually give me an idea of direction.

Don't Bother with Shields... They all suck! I use a "Non Physical Vehicle Ball" i had modified to control just like regular flying/walking. I res it and sit. The ball allows me to move around just like normal walking/flying except im sitting on a object that does not rely on physics to move it. I refuse to wear shields anymore cuz even while using 3 of the top brand shields i still get orbited (And i used to be a huge shield fanatic). Your best bet is to grab a non phys ball. I have supplied a modified one in my freebies shelf at Wolf Valley (Yiffy's Freebies). The Ball will not protect you against damage though. But that shouldnt be a problem if your like me and don't prefer to ingage in combat, would much rather socialize and build stuff.

Locking your door won't keep a determined burglar out, but it does make you less of a target overall. It's really the same thing.

Would this be a bad time to point out that ProTEC has a non phys ball as part of the system?

While this thread seems to have the attention of shield makers and users, I'd like to put in a request to make these things friendlier to nearby physical vehicles. I do realise the technical difficulty and processing overhead involved, but why even bother looking forward to Havok 2 if you aren't going to be able to use physical vehicles within 100m of all the Joe Don'tShootMe's wearing a shield? Of course, not ALL shields I've seen have this problem.
