I have a question for all of you that attended the SLCC. Actually anyone who knows or has met a fellow SLer in RL can answer.

Did you call each other by your SL names while you were there or your RL names?

That is a great question. I was wondering the same thing myself actually. :)

hehe - well...

Everyone there called me Travis. With one exception...

I was in the bar, and it was dark & loud. I was all distracted, and Postmark, who was sitting next to me tried to get my attention...

"travis!"

"Travis!"

"STEVE!!!" -- then I looked :D

honestly. most people referrednames. knowing that's why we were there, many of us called each other by our SL names and, i think, most of us expected it.. possibly even preferred it!

if you were talking to someone, you would refer to a previous meeting via SL terms.. who would know "Joe, Steve, Bob, Jane, Sally, ec.."? more likely to say "hey, did you see Anshe?" or, "Neph is so sweet!" or.. even the mention of the name 'Philip'.. you don't think Rosedale, you think Linden!

so, SL names were more prevelant.. RL names were mainly used between people who already knew each other outside of SL (whether online or off).

PS - great question!!!

Mostly I heard people calling others by their SL names. I know I only reffered to people that way. And after reading the program, I realized I was the only person on a panel at the conference that did not give their RL name. A handful of people know it, but honestly, I'm as much Pen as anything else. So I would have prefered being called Pen even if people had known my First Life name. Both are my *real* name, so I don't see the difference. :D

I used SL names with most people just because I was having a hard enough time remembering that. There were some people I already knew real life names before attending, with them I used RL names because I already knew them that way.

SL names is what I heard the whole time - with a couple exceptions. For example SNOOPYbrown was called "Jerry" because Jerry's always gone by Jerry on www.accelerating.org and the Future Salon website.

As for me? When all the Lindens call me Hiro in person ... I guess my name is Hiro.

Being that my first RL name, and first SL name are the same, I'd be easy. :D

How do you know the people claiming to be a certain avatar really are that avatar's operator?

I just returned from the thing in amsterdam, it was great! w00t and no we called eachother by our sl names.. one of the other residents asked me what my RL first name was and i just said, billy. :) I wouldnt call anyone by their RL name unless their sl name was something off the wall.. like doodlebird or something or if i had serious issues pronouncing it. I guess some people see it as a friendly thing, getting to know eachother and such but oddly enough.. my RL friends that i have gotten to play sl call me billy aswell.. :\ it sticks i guess

heheh after calling these people one name for so many months, there was no way i was going to remember a whole other overlay of names for the same people. If I knew you as flipper, flipper you were. :)

yeah I just bypassed names.

Hey how YOU doing?

Nice to meet YOU.

etc....

Too much info, but it was fun to meet everyone I did :)

on the flip side I assume it was easy for others considering my first name in RL is the same as in SL :p

I've only met one person, and I went by Lo Jacobs.

However, I do think that -- depending on the nature of the gathering -- if it's a smaller one, I'd go by my real name.

But, who knows.

I wasn't there (obviously those of you that were there are saying)...however, I have met a few SLers RL. When I have, most of the time, like 95%, I call them by their SL names. I do that when I call on the phone too. I know their real names, but to me, the names I refer to them in my head and the names I have the fond memories associated with, are their SL names. It's interesting though...a lot of people that talk to me rl or have met me combine both my names together RL nameKat...*shrugs* *strolls away to try to get the insomnia to let me sleep* :P

Yeah, but what about your names? ;)

I've been Flipper in RL for about 20 years now as a nickname as well, so its not odd for me to be referred to as Flip. A few people called me by my RL name, because I had some friends and business contacts who attended to check out what the hubbub was all about.

I called everyone by the SL names, with the one exception Hiro already pointed out, as well as Randy Moss (RC Mars) because of working on the RFL together.

I've met a ton of SLers in real life now - in England, in Philly, in San Fran, and in New York - and we've always gone by SL names. The really amazing part is how easy it is to transition from SL to RL - its a very natural transition to go from SL friends to RL friends. You can almost just "tell" who's who in RL by their SL personalities.

Regards,

-Flip

This is great info to know. Grim and I hope to meet people irl in SF in the near future. This was something that was on my mind. I can't imagine trying to learn RL names after knowing someone under a different name in SL. Goes to show, be careful what you choose as your SL name hehe. It will stick.

I have a group friends from Internet for about eight years now; we meet regularly in various parts of the country. And we ALWAYS call each other by our play names, even on the phone. Over time, we've learned the real names (well, most of them), but it would feel funny to use them.
