My neck hurts

OK In First Life I am all of 5 feet tall so I decided it would be cool to make my Second Life AV the same height. In First Life I can deal with it because most people aren't that much taller than me..only a foot or so but Second Life is a killer. I may never recover from looking up at 7 foot tall people. My neck is killing me.

I am not being critical of Second Life giants but what exactly is the deal?

2 Reasons:
  1. No height indicator in the avatar appearance sliders
  2. Why not? This isn't carboncopy live. This is your world your imagination.

Hehe as a person with a low height setting, I feel ya. I've had some people be almost twice as tall as me before.

Really it's not a huge deal though, in perspective, which do you think is more accurate? The height scanner that gives you a number, or basing your appearance based on the rest of the world.

Be 6 feet tall and you'll look 5 feet tall.

But but but if I base my height on the rest of the world I will be 9 feet tall and look gawky.

There is no way to win this one I see.

WoW... you just hit on the very most problem I have with SL avies!

I made my SL avie the same height as me in real, 5'7". Everyone towers over me. So, I decide to give in and make my avie 6'3" ...everyone STILL towers over me... These people must be slideing that scale up all the way and makeing themselves 8 feet tall!!

This is crazy... So, I am just takeing mine back down to a realistic 5'7". I wager a guarantee that every person who make themselves giants in SL are in real 5'5" and shorter.

What, do these guys think that taller is better? If so they are very wrong. In real I would never want to be any taller than I am. I have been in martial arts for 26 years and have never lost a match against anyone over 6 feet simply because it's too easy to use their height against them.

My answer to you Susie is to just continue being you. Let these clowns continue their unrealistic dreams of grandeur. It's all they have to be happy about themselves.

It's animal instinct, the bigger animals are stronger than the smaller ones. It's the reason why peacocks have those wacky feathers and some lizards can inflate their heads.

But in an intelligent society we know how to use weight distribution, kinetic energy, and gravity to it's maximum potential so being big doesn't necessarily mean strong anymore. But in an instinctual sense there's still the concept that bigger is better. Especially with guys.

I'm only 5'6", I think. Join the few, the proud, the shorts. Look on the bright side of caring about being short, you know anyone over 6' is airheaded bimbo anyways. Height, maxed; breasts, maxed; hips, maxed; everything else (IQ included) minned. I think there is a direct relationship between bling and height. ;)

Seriously, it probably started as a game with each person trying to be taller than the next; until everyone reached their maximum height.

Either that or I would say the excuse would be that at a greater height, you have more surface with which to blend curves. But... I would be lying.

I don't think taller is better. Proportionately speaking, taller AVs look better compared to the rest of the world IMHO.

I don't think I'm a clown with unrealistic dreams of grandeur and I have plenty to be happy about myself. I am sure Susie can continue being herself in spite of my and everybody else's tallness.

I think you didn't read Fran's post: *why not? your world, your imagination*.

I sure haven't ignored your points of pure logic. Within days of entering SL someone gave me an Av measure thingy and when I found out I was 6'3" I quickly corrected the problem.
As far as reality vs unreality goes I choose the reality path so I wouldn't look like a goofball.

I've tried to set my RL height (I keep a free height detector in my store, and hand them out to anyone). It's not just the height, though, it's the shoes! I've got this pair of...well, what appears to be modestly heeled shoes. A few pairs. Look at them while I'm wearing them and you'd swear that they wouldn't add more than an inch of height.

But no. It's five inches. Another pair that appears only slightly taller, adds seven inches. So, I've made my avie just a little shorter to compensate a little. I don't want to have to go in and start wrestling with modifying my entire shoe collection..

I'm a 6'1" female in real life, so I made my av tall as well. Nothing to do with "unrealistic dreams of grandeur" only a representation of my real self, and I think it looks better on the avs. But thanks for the snotty comment, and the implication that being tall is somehow grand. It's usually only short people that think that being tall is something grand. Tall people usually just think it's hard to find pants long enough.

The reason is probably because, even though SL uses real world measurements for everything (in meters), 3d graphics have a tendency to look too small. I'm not sure whether it's a difference in field of view compared to your eyes, the fact that the actual size of the objects is only a few inches tall, or something else entirely, but I've noticed it in several engines.

Case in point: One day, for fun (because I'm crazy like that), I decided to make a scale model of my current place in Half-life 2. I diligently measured everything, found out the scale the game uses, and built accordingly.

Not only did things look too small, I couldn't even get Gordon Freeman to fit through the doorway to my kitchen/dining room. We aren't talking "bedroom door" size opening, either. Gordon must've put on some weight...

So, I wound up scaling everything up by something like 25-50%. Then it looked right, and I could pass through the doors.

Same thing here. When I build characters to a specific real height (as measured by an avatar size thing I grabbed at the Stillman Bazaar) they *invariably* look ridiculously small.

...What Susie and I are referring to are the ones who make themselves eight feet tall or so. Nothing wrong with 6'1" ...heck, nothing wrong with 6'5" or even 7 feet if that's what you are in real life. Eight to nine feet tall is just silliness.

i need to check to see how tall it actualy is with the height slider all the way up.

It's not just the height slider. Length of the legs, hips, torso and neck will also change height. Head size and shape might affect it too.

I should go change my av to 5'11" then, since that's what I am in rl... and I need to change her hair to brown and remake her face... also have to fiddle with breast size and muscle mass...

Oh, and I should get rid of all the clothing that I don't have in my closet here at home... and I need to find a place to rent that looks exactly like my dorm room. Also, i'd better walk everywhere because I can't jump 8 feet in the air, and flying is right out.

You lose your wager. My FL avatar is 6'3". In SL, my avatar is not quite at the maximum settings, because it looked as close to my FL avatar's proportions as possible, but I never measured exactly.

In FL, runt males almost always have delusions of adequacy, Napoleon complexes, and claim to "know martial arts", but whenever these things are tested for real, they're weak little beta male yappy-dogs. You can try to hit or throw someone who weighs twice as much as you can lift, but they won't even notice you. Please be serious. If I thought you'd listen, I'd tell you to carry a gun for self-defense, not to rely on your fantasies.

In FL, there are enormous advantages to height, and some annoyances. Tall people can reach the top shelves (hell, at your shortness, you'd have a hard time reaching a middle shelf!) and change lightbulbs (see, light comes from electrically-stimulated wires in hollow bulbs WAAAAAY up there in the ceiling. You might not be able to see that far, but it's there) without a stepladder. Tall people can see over crowds of "normal" midgets. Tall people get more promotions and are treated with more respect than short people; it's almost comical when you look at groups of business executives, or watch a waiter leap to serve the tall person and ignore the nigh-invisible midgets. As long as the runts aren't better-armed, a tall person is in almost no danger walking around at night.

The down sides? Good clothes are slightly harder to find (until extreme height, they cost about the same). I recently annoyed/amused a short Macy's clerk by asking if they had "adult size socks, er, size 13+?". "No, sir, we only have childrens' sizes. Have you tried Rochester Big and Tall?"

Compact cars, of course, are almost impossible. My friends take pity on me and let me always ride shotgun if I must travel with them, and even then it's like Bob from The Incredibles in his little box car. Business-class air travel is uncomfortable at best; good thing there's first class, and I'm paid well enough to afford it. I'm not quite at the size where joints would be a major health problem, but for the very tallest, that's an issue. It's all pretty minor, though.

In SL, there's little or no difficulty, because every area has to be big enough for camera movement anyway, and clothes expand to fit. Because tall characters are scaled proportional to the world, they look better, but that's about it. There's no physical advantages. However, the psychological advantage is still there--you've just proven it with your mean-spirited little rant. You're so crippled by shortness of spirit that you can't even make yourself tall in a world where you can be an Olympian God if you wish. How tragic.

I'm 5' 3" in rl, so when I made my avi, I used a height bar and made me that tall. After a week at looking in ppl's belly buttons, I moved my slider to 60. Still short to the world, but not a pygmy.

My best (as recorded by llGetAgentSize) is 2.318691m, or 91.2870472 inches = just over 7 ft 7 inches. Can anyone get a taller av with some crazy combination of the sliders?

wow... that's kinda bigoted..
my av is tall.. but in RL i'm around 6'1"... and i made my proportions basically the same as my RL proportions... in fact, i've worn pretty much the same crazy outfits in RL as in SL...
but IT'S NOT RL... so why not let people be whatever they want.. you'd be surprised what the freedom of SL means to some people.. in RL.. i am mostly too incapacited by pain to walk...
SL gives me wings where in RL i have none!!!
so let us have our freedom.. please..

Way to go Jacobi. It truely is sad that with all the people wanting to be 8 feet tall it gives realists no choice.

Maybe there is a market for belly button lint in SL?? After all, it is a world where an average joe geek can paint themselves up to look like a vampire so they can pretend to be cool..i guess the saying is true '*why not? your world, your imagination*.

back on topic from before greifers butted in where they weren't wanted....

It was ignored because it makes sense. You lose all the forum fun that way :D

But yeah, seriously I once ran around in a shorter avie, but it didn't look as pretty when she was taller (easier on the eyes). So that's my reason. Besides, it's SL, I run in it with my imagination. Why should I let my RL height issues get in the way?

And for that matter why should I let other people's 'realist' issues get in the way of how I have my fun in SL? Afterall, you see space alients, tinies, smurfs, furries and they're not real why should a tall avie be an issue? :p
