For Andrew Linden: how's the Havok integration coming along? Any ETA on when we will get "joint" functionality back? Remember when you removed joints because their removal would ease the integration of the new physics engine?

Havok is probably another year or three out; they're all working on bugfixes. Remember, we bitched about them not fixing bugs?

Well, now they're fixing bugs.

Tada!

While there are actually a number of bugs releating to physics in the "Current Version Feedback Forum", here is one you started that brings up physics issues on the first page. If bug fixing is the agenda, and multiple physics related bugs abound, shouldn't the upgrade to Havok be on the table since it possibly could solve some of these issues in one fell swoop rather than patching the already buggy Linux release of Havok 1?

Social MMOery, they *do* have competition, though in terms of user commerce they don't really have any. But in any case, I have certainly come to appreciate personally that the physical world, which is what really drew me into SL in the first place, is not going to be improved in the near future, and that saddens me.

Sorry about that Ordinal, I know there is competition (ActiveWorlds, There and a few on the horizon for a start) but I was more comparing Second Life's position to the larger world of online 3D space usage. While chasing 600,000 users with free accounts Xbox Live is about to hit 6 million paid subscribers. Second Life doesn't crack the top chart of http://mmogchart.com/ (though this may be because they count paying subscribers only). I will stand by my opinion that social aspects of MMOs will always take a back seat to "gameplay" however you want to define it.

I don't think I can be described as an incessant complainer but this issue really does get my goat, and, as I mentioned earlier on back when this thread was new, if there was one thing that would make me switch from SL it would be a buildable, scriptable environment with a better physics engine.

Ultimately I am confident you will find that new world in two years time. I think it will be a very different world, however, less tied to the moneymaking foundation here. it will instead be a buildable world, an extensible world, perhaps with an aspect of commerce but not in the way Second Life exists requiring users to both create and pay to host their content. After 2008 with the release of APB (the Grand Theft Auto-themed MMO) and more extensive availability of fiber connections to the home either a major game developer or some sort of open-source private server based alternative will spring up, allowing both the creative and the technical to offer everyone an exciting, "living" world.
