Security Question Not on File

This issue has come up a fair bit, especially posts 9, 14, 17, 27 of /108/8e/135877/1.html
the "Omg I forgot my security question answer..." thread, and seems like it deserves its own thread.

I agree with Skye, if you typed in gibberish that you promptly forgot for the answer, then that's kinda too bad. If you forgot it, I feel for you; it might happen to me someday. But, at least you're lucky enough to have a question! :)

So, 2 other people on the forum, myself, and my friend/business partner have gotten "we do not have a security question on file for your account" and a link to the blog which doesn't even mention this possibility. Anybody else get this (that can get into the forums)?

Also, I thought (but correct me if I'm wrong), that the security question/answer was mandatory and not an optional choice. Otherwise, how is it missing? Did it maybe get compromised too?

Anybody get any info from support on this yet?

Yes.. heres the thread that I started a few minutes ago.. quite puzzling because I thought we were forced to create a security question??

My oldest account, which I rarely use now but want to keep still...they sent me two emails, and they each directed me to a different security question...neither of which worked. Eventually I realized I had changed my email address for that account since I registered it, and checked the new and current email and there was a third email directing me to yet another security question which thankfully DID work.

Seems to me this system is sending security question emails out to every email address that has ever been associated with an account...not just the current one. No idea though why the security questions associated with each email were different, or why two of em were not even valid security questions.

I am not encouraged by my own experience with this system to think those with issues will have much luck getting things resolved.

Did they have the security question requirement way back when you all first created your accounts? Seems most all of you are from 2004.

Be sure there not a spoof e-mail from the person who hacked the server!
why break the enryption on the passwords when they can get you to hand it over!

Yes, my main account is receiving the message that they do not have a security question for that acct. I went to Live Help and they referred me to Support. I've emailed Support twice and have not received any kind of help and it been a couple/few hours now. I cannot log my main account into Second Life as a result.

I have no idea what recourse to take except to continue sending emails to support.

Yes I get the "no security question on file" crap as well.

After emailing LL and getting back the standard reply, I emailed them back to point out that I would gladly use their password recovery tool, but their system appears fucked and isn't giving me the chance!

Suffice to say, no reply on that one yet

Your right - all accounts need a security question when you open them, it's a mandatory field so obviously something else is fucked up their end.

Yes this is true- but whats the common denominator.. ? This account I am trying to verify is from like 4-5 months ago- so its a NEW one basically, and not on my Nytemyst Grace account .. its for an alt I use to test things and take photo's with for products.

anyone have any clues on it?

My business partner is having the same problem with the secutiry question. I spoke to a Linden via LiveHelp in SL and she said phone support would be available on Monday.

My partner is going to liquidate and leave the game if he has to wait until Monday to even start waiting on the phone. :( We've been asking each other how many people will leave the game over this?

DAMN! I wish SL would actually work!!! I'm starting to think it's all just part of the big experiment. :)

. . . now i have to go looking for some &*$%#@ rental store again . . .

In response, to Bobby and Nytemyst, yea, my account in particular is also fairly new, about 3-4 months, just before they stopped giving out stipends to free accounts.

Most likely, yes. I joined in October 2004 and had no problems changing my password (got it on the first try too).

Yes, I got the "No Security Question" message. I called the 800 number, got the recording, then called the 415 number on the support page of secondlife.com.

Spoke with someone immediately, she set up a security question for me, went back through the reset password process (had another email sent to me), still no security question.

Called back, spoke to Cyn Linden. She said the person I spoke to earlier didn't save the changes she made to my account. Cyn set up a security question for me, I went through the reset process again, and was all set and back in-world in no time.

So, the moral of the story is...Cyn Linden is really kewl :)

Yes. And mine happened to work, in a stroke of luck.

Though one of my two alts is SOL.
