LL changed my ALTS NAME! without telling me! ROFL

Well it all started as a joke!

LOL i made an alt, for laughs and married my main account, wuvme

I dont have use for alts, but i decided it was funny, since all of you know i wuv dildos..

So a new last name came along, and i thought it was funny, this was before sl was free.
I paid 9 bucks and made:

DILDO DULCE

lol and married him with wuv!

Anywho,

I was gone for a month i come back.. i looked at my profile, and saw a different name under my PARTNER..

it was "Darling dulce"

ROFLMAO

i was like WTF!

And then i tried to log in using "Dildo dulce" and it would not let me log in.
If LL let me create a name, why would they change it... and NOT even say a WORD to me.. if it did not have another account i would have not been able to log in, and they picked a name that i dont want.. do i get my 9 bucks back? NO
am i stuck with a name i dont like.. YES!!

was a joke. was reading the "coverage" last night of the griefsphere on the Harold and they mentioned on one of thier links that LL changed the name of a character from Bukkake to "Butterfly"

I think this is another example of their sense of humor. Which you sometimes see on the Police Blotter page as well.

awww wuvme i think that's not very fair. they should at least have notified you and asked you to change the name. i know that in other games they namelock the character if the name chosen isn't very 'appreciated' and it won't be able to be logged on unless the name is changed.

i guess it's just another incident of LL playing god again maybe instead of naming him dildo, you could just make him into one giant dildo avie now

The most interesting part of this is... I was under the impression changing an avatar's name was not possible.

Changing an av's name is possible, when you consider the basics of database design. And rule #1 is that you never use words as a primary key. So, in their database, the primary identifier is not your name, but rather, your key. The av's name is just another field in the database, like the bio, partner name, etc. So, in theory, we can change av names willy-nilly without affecting anything system-side.

However, since the Lindens control the database, they have control over name changes, and they've chosen not to allow name changes except under extreme circumstances. I heartily disagree with their policy, but that's what they've decided. EVERYONE should know that not being able to change names is an administrative issue, not a technical one.

While this is funny and to wuvme, innocuous, it's ah ... kind of unsettling at the same time that this was done without the least bit of notice or opportunity of choice, no?

And for that matter, while an image of a dildo might be inappropriate for PG areas, I would question how clear-cut calling the word "dildo" inappopriate.

You may not select as your Account ID or Avatar Name the name of another person, a name which violates any trademark right, copyright, or other proprietary right, a name which may mislead other Participants to believe you to be an employee of Linden, or a name which Linden deems in its discretion to be vulgar or otherwise offensive. Linden reserves the right to delete or change any Account ID or Avatar Name for any reason or no reason.


Lets find a way to convert wasted space on the forums into food and we can solve the world hunger problem.

Kazuo, I think most people are aware of the TOS' stance on AV names, but the discussion really is about:

1. How funny this is.
2. Whether or not the word "Dildo" is indeed "vulgar or otherwise offensive"
3. Why LL gave no notice of the change. (Though, perhaps they sent IMs to the alt, and wuvme never logged on to get them, and they were not xferred over to the new alt name.)
