However, I'm not sure I'd be too comfortable saying 'Dildo' in front of my grandmother.

IMHO the imagary of the word Dildo doesn't belong in PG sims, either - considering the *wide* audience we need to be sensitive to for those sims.

So I guess neither you nor your granny live in or near Dildo, Newfoundland, then.

I'm not sure what's wrong with images of a picturesque rural fishing village.

I'll never truly understand how, given two words that have the same meaning, one is appropriate and one is considered obscene. The word itself is obscene and not the object/act being described? And I'm not talking about the difference between something such as a racial slur vs a racial identifier, but more the line between, for example, a slang term for a body part vs. medical terminology.

I, for one, am astounded, especially considering SLrs tend to be more liberal than most.

The case can be made that putting "Dildo" as an AV name may or may not be an appropriate context for Dildo, making its use potentially offensive. However, I did not expect a non-slang term for an adult sexual aid would cause such a reaction with this crowd. (Or, am I being presumptuous in saying that "Dildo" is non-slang?)

Is "condom" M-rated, too? How about "Vagina"? If normal, non-slang words that deal with sex are considered M-Rated, does this mean honest discussion in a PG area - such as this whole forum post - is banned?

"Condom" shouldnt be considered an M-rated word because of its importance in the discussion of safe sex, health and educational issues. "Vagina" should not be considered M-rated either for some of the same reasons. But the context in which these words are used could result in "mature dialogue" that offers no educational or informative value. "Dildo" on the other hand really has one meaning and offers zero value for eduction no matter the context in which its used.

I'm assuming your query pertains to what is inappropriate for an PG sim versus Mature. You're most likely not talking about a conversation in which one were to say the words dildo, asshole, or even douchebag (if one were attempting to explain to a friend in need how the correct procedure for douching for example) then it would seem silly to find it offensive. Much like I am doing here, no drama, just words. However, if I were using the words dildo, asshole, or douchebag to apply to a person, it would indeed be swearing. It is far harder to imagine the SL conversation using the word dildo in a matter of fact and descriptive rather than a manner which one would categorize as being "swearing".

Now, if you are considering the advertising of dildoes for sale, that would violate the spirit of a pg sim in which the expectation is to be free from mature content. Even if you aren't displaying them or an image of them you are still selling or advertising their sale. It's not a swear word in this instance but it is mature content.

I'm not advocating the use of the term in PG sims, but it certainly has some value for education. If you are, for instance, engaged in any sexual education discussion, it would be entirely appropriate to discuss the item in question.
