Lordfly, you just put in "Games and Contests."

Then you READ.

Then my eyes cross after the second-dozen misspelled Tringo event, and then I can't see any other events.

From: someone

You read the whole list to see if there is a game or contest you don't know about. Like "Blood21" if you didn't know it existed.

I truly don't have time to sort through 300+ events. An events filter would do wonders.

From: someone

However, if you don't skim the whole list of "Games and Contests" once in a while, you will never know when a new game, like Blood21, comes along. You will lead a more limited life.

Every once in a while? You'll have to read it daily, which means slogging through 300+ events a day that I'm not interested in, in order to find the perhaps one nugget of joy that won't be continued because no one else will FIND it. And thus the cycle continues.

From: someone

If you are interested in "Discussion" - which I always am - then you click on "Discussion." Usually there will be only 3-5 of these; sometimes more, sometimes less. It's VERY easy to find discussions you might be interested in.

Today has nothing listed.

Yesterday has Philosophy 101, a Free Nano iPod, a BDSM class, and another philosophy round table.

The day before yesterday has no less than 4 BDSM discussions. This is hardly highbrow edutainment.

From: someone

Listen, all of you who go on and on about hating the events list, why not just don't look at it? (And many of you say you already don't.)

If we don't look at it, we can't find the joyous events you keep insisting exist underneath the 40 tons of Tringo, now can we?

From: someone

Why do things like charge more for them? Why do you want to punish the people who like the events categories and depend on them to play their Second Lives?

"Because there ain't such thing as a free lunch."

I've never heard of a club in RL that didn't 1) have a covercharge, 2) overprice their drinks, or 3) both.

From: someone

Because those of us who actually like Bingo or Blood 21, or best boob contests or whatever are intolerably low-brow?

Not low-brow, just obscenely over-represented in the events list.

From: someone

The categories addresses any concern of "quality" events getting lost in the lists, and any idiot can easily access those categories. The categories FIXED that problem.

No, they didn't. Any game that isn't *ingo is lost in the shuffle.

From: someone

I like the garage sales ads, too. Any idiot knows these are buyer beware, and they are FUN to check out. Yet another thing for me to do when I'm bored and tired of working.

Any idiot knows... of course, that's why there's always the accusations of yard sales selling freebies, or reselling sold content at higher prices, or price gouging in general... people fall for it. And it's not an event, it's a temporary store. This is not momentous. It's not worth my time to read.

Filters, please. Right after Havok2 and Html Integration (meaning sometime after 2012)

300 of them, at last count.

i haven't bothered searching, because it broke in 1.6.x.

Wake me up when the Events List isn't a fucking throng of $L schemes.

Enabran - if you want to see quality events, why haven't you been hosting them?

A lot of newbies get extra money if they can win at *ingo. There are very few other places where they can do that.

I agree that there is a lot of crud on the events list but if you can't spend a few minutes trawling for something interesting, then its your fault.

There has been an event listed today which has nothing to do with sexy avies or *ingo. A friend of mine, The Sojourner has created a competition for people to enter by building a halloween themed structure. I went to see the builds earlier and some of them are brilliant. Why don't you go have a look and vote for your favourites?

Alternatively come to the next Thinkers meeting. A group of people with interesting ideas who don't always agree but all have their say. Usually fascinating subjects so give it a try.

Recently, I sponsored weekly skydiving contests with a L$1000 prize. Skydiving is fun, and it's easy money. Why didn't more newbies show up? Probably because the event was lost in a pile of ALL CAPS TRINGO BINGO THONG CONTEST announcements. I'm willing to bet that most people don't even bother to look at the calendar anymore, b/c it's full of bogus events.

Without a calendar that shows legitimate events and not perma-ads for clubs and stores, there's no way for event holders to bring in a crowd.

Well, not sure what you mean by "bogus events."

All the *ingo events I have gone to have actual people there, and the event is held.

(I can't speak about the thong contest events, cause as I said, I don't go to those, but maybe someone else can.)

P.S. I don't get what everybody has against Tringo, Bingo, Slingo, etc. ANYWAY.

Those games are fun! I like to play games. I like to look on the event calendar, when I have time, and see it say, "7:00 pm" Slingo - maybe even at two places.

Donch'all like to play Scrabble or something? Don't you like games?? I have always loved games.

If your yard sale is all day every day 24 hours a day -- its not a yard sale. Its a shop.

Just thought we ought to get that terminology straight.

That is all.

Exactly! Your right too, I have nearly given up looking at events at all. XXX,bling, cum win some muny, big (name your favorite sexual part here) contest....blaa blaa blaa.

The only event I saw worth going to was was one by Soj this week a halloween building contest voting event. Unfortuanatly sl was running so crappy I finaly gave up waiting for the textures to rez. The relogging, crashing, and patching was too much.

hehehehe, this has been a pet peeve of mine as well. However, the events listings continue to get spammed by people worshipping at the altar of the almighty TRAFFICVS.

An event, people, is when you do something that BREAKS the status quo. If you're a tringo parlor, hosting tringo is not an event. If you're a store, selling items is not an event. If you're me, being a wiseass isn't an event. Get it?

I dunno, Lordfly.

Even on a very busy day, the event list has never been too difficult for me to skim. I regularly do it, without even filtering by category.

Do I have to look carefully to avoid missing an interesting event in the chaff? Sure. But it's not a huge chore... but then, it's not much difference than scanning a forum for intruiging threads. ;)

Well, Cubey, in my case it's because you held them at an ungodly hour of the morning. :D

(but then, I deeply feel morning at all is for other people.)

For crying out loud Coco, don't be so deliberately obtuse. Nobody's against games and you know that.

There is obviously a problem with how some people are using the events calendar. It's full of non-events, and there's an oversaturation of certain kinds of events.

A good calendar includes games and has a balance of activities that appeal to a broad range of participants, and *excludes* advertising disguised as events.

There are still some good events if you don't mind working your way through the *ingo and yard sale infested list. I admit it takes patience. :)

No, 7 pm is just late at night, instead. (Well, okay, 10 pm, but I usually go to bed around 11. My employment believes I am other people.)

Cubey - Skydiving sounds fun but unfortunately 7pm PST is 3am my time or I would have attended.

Martin - do try and go back to Soj's halloween competition - there are some excellent builds.

It is pointless splitting hairs over the definition of an 'event'. We all know what an event is in SL and it does not have to be a special occasion. Tringo IS an event, even though there is a certain snobbery about it by older members of SL, although I do agree that there is too much duplication in the list.

Well i got sick of all those yard sales, of people selling used.. second hand items.

So i gathered with some friends and designers and i decided to have a "super Sale"
Its not an "everyday" thing, its a place where designers get together and put part of their store's items for sale in a very cheap price.

The rules of the sale is for the designers to put the items NO transfer so it will avoid any "re-selling" of any type. (yard sales ), And they must put all items at least 40% of the regular price in their own store.

Results:

I have been hosting around 3 super sales, and they are all are great.
Everyone leaves the sim happy, because they bought something from the original designer and they saved alot of money, then in regular days.

The designer makes alot of money, as well as new custumers.
If a custumer bought something of yours for $50 and loved your work, when they get more money im sure they will go to your store and buy at regular price.

The designers love my sales as well as custumers, and they are always willing to do another one.

I wish you would quit calling me deliberately obtuse! Yes, people ARE against games, and it's obvious!

I know there are minor problems with how the calendar works. The idea Travis had about being about to put in "-tits" or whatever would be great. The things that are just ads, yes, those aren't terrific.

But if people want to complain about what the events ARE, I say they don't GET to. If Tringo weren't so dang popular, there wouldn't be so much Tringo! Ergo, people WANT Tringo. And I want and like garage sales! (Though I would prefer the full-time second-hand stores - assuming there are those - just go into full-time business as a resale shop.)

You can't force a "balance of activities." Oversaturation of a certain kind of events simply reflects the popularity of that kind of events. People want those events. Just because you or I may not like them doesn't mean they should GO. Or be limited to what looks proper, or whatever.

I don't have any problem overlooking the dozens of tits and ass contests. So why can't people just overlook the word "Tringo" if they don't like it?

Besides, keeping the people happy at those activities who like those activities means they will have someplace to wear the STUFF WE MAKE and take their sweeties home to the HOUSES WE MAKE.

coco

P.S. That's a great idea, Wuvme!

Best way to have your event well-attended is:

1) Make the title in lower (mixed case). 'Primtionary with Lisse' really stands out among the surrounding 20 events named '$$$TRINGO MASSIVE POTS$$$'.

2) Make a post in the 'Special Attractions' forum a few hours beforehand. With any luck, the title will be sitting there in the forums list as the last thread in that forum for long enough that people notice it.

3) Viral marketing. Invite your friends, especially those whom you know have enjoyed that type of event previously. Ask them to invite their friends.

4) Hold your event regularly, so that people are expecting it (1-2 times per week) but not so often that it becomes mundane (3-4 times per day!)

Here's the routine I follow when I log in:
-Bring up events listing
-Select Games/Contests
-Type in 'Primtionary', hit search. Check list, hit 'Notify' for any that come up
-Repeat for 'Textur', 'Build', 'Trivia', 'Quintzee'
-Blank out search word, search again.
-Skim list quickly, starting with the next hour, looking for anything I missed
-If really bored and there's nothing else, go to the next Tringo that isn't 'Speed'

That's the only way I found The Soujourner's Halloween Building Contest and I too am really glad I did (as I managed to find it in time to participate!)

I'd love there to be a better way, but can't think of one that isn't open to being gamed the way the current one is.

What pisses me off is the requirement that I have some kind of contest with a high L$ amount to get anyone to show up at all. I'm going to have to start my Pirate Jaunts at these tringo and yardsale events, robbing and plundering people.

hmmm
Yanno ever since the end of Linden support for events i have read about peopel no longer holding "good" events that all there is out there is Slingo et al. and how you need to bribe people to come to anything in SL. So i started out on a little project, to it had several purposes, mainly, to meet people...but i also wanted to know if people would come to something different. Thus was born my clown nose photo project and just to give you soem numbers it cost me apporx. 30,000L and 6 months...i took pictures of 220 residents and put 600 pictures on display..well during the one week it was up an dshowing where i had tip jars out i took in over 10,000 L9ndens in donations over all i have recieved 35,000L in donations, and over teh 2 week period that i had it showing 493 people visited And this was a "event" where not only did i not offer any prizes..i was beggin for money. So i guess my point is if ya wanna do a event that is different DO it! People WILL come, put out a tip jar if peopel enjoy they will tip. i look for different types of things inteh events listing and on teh forums it really isn't all that difficult. so unles sthe only reason you held educational events or cultural events was to get the what? 200Linden i say continue holdin it.
*blush* ok i'll shut up now
