You know what I love? Getting ejected from my vehicle due to ban lines.

I'm speeding along peacefully. Suddely, the edge of my boat hits a banline belonging ot a rather boring-looking property.

SMACKBANG! I fly off, and keep flying around unable to do anything or see anything but blackness until I relog.

Congratulations, ace. Now you have an extremely high-prim boat on your property, I believe. I'll be damned if I search it up. :P

Dearly Darling,

What a shame you lost your boat! Perhaps it will leak virtual oil or gas on the property and cause a prim fish kill. I hate ban lines too.

That wasn't ban lines that did that. Ban lines do suck though, so do overzealous security scripts.

OMFG! I *hate* that! I get the same thing when I'm flying! And don't even get me started on sim crossings! At least with a boat you can enjoy the void sims that seem to be popping up quite a bit. That is if you can find a non exclusive piece of land to rez the damn thing.

Can anyone explain why the visiblility of ban lines was reduced? It used to be you could see them sufficiently far away to avoid running into restricted property. The increase in ban height has also made flying even worse than it was before when all you had to watch out for were griefer security scripts.

Because they're eye sores and they ruin the view.

The old ban lines used to be these huge red bars that you could see as far as your draw distance, so they were always in screenshots and shit.

I would personally rather them not exist. There HAS to be a better way to "ban" someone than throwing them into an ugly wall.

It would be nice if there was a way to detect that a parcel had ban lines up in script. That way there could be some form of sensor that would warn pilots there was one ahead. As it is there seems to be no way to avoid them, particularly in sim crossing.

I love playing chicken with ban-lined properties! I rez the ugliest vehicle in my inventory, strap on my hyperaccelerated jumpjet and back up a half sim or so. I then hit the key and accelerate right into the banlines - sending the hunko junk careening carelessly into the property and me sailing waaaaaaaaay up high until the sky turns black and I can't breathe anymore and I'm just a set of floating eyes. Then I descend gracefully back down, wafting like an ephemeral piece of virtual down. Until a home security system targets me with the requisite "you have 0.00000001 seconds to vacate this property."

I pause hovering, waiting with bated breath until at last the system orbits me once again and I rush skyward like a meteor in reverse, pausing blissfully at my apogee, again breathless and floating eyes, until once again I start my descent. And again encounter another security system, repeating the glorious cycle over and over for hours! I've crossed the mainland several times like this and it never ceases to be such exquisite fun!

See when life presents the absurdly ridiculous to you, you can rail and cavort and cry out in outraged dignity that the universe has played you foul, or you can embrace the gift the universe (or metaverse) has chosen to offer you and turn it into a sublime and wonderful experience!

Embrace absurdity as the wonderful madfolk we all are!

hmm I had my property locked one day due to a desire for privacy (:D) and some guy tried to tell me I was violating the TOS because he couldn't fly across my land.

You can get ejected from your vehicle if a property that borders the edge of the sim has ban lines up and you try to cross into it. In my testing, I believe I always went to the (0, 0, 0) coord in the sim and left the vehicle behind.

I wish there was a ban line draw distance so I can turn it all the way up when flying and all the way down when not.

I wish there was a way to see ban areas on the mini-map.

The fracked things have DESTROYED flying and boating. They also make it hard to fly from one spot to another. All in the name of privacy and ascetics, you may think it is beating a dead horse but a lot of residents are PISSED!

I am very angry and it will not take much more for me to pull the plug on Second Life. I am limited to private sims that can be trusted. It will not take much more, when they sell SL to a large firm and kiddize it. I will pull the plug!

I never bother going looking for my vehicles when griefed by a security system in this way.

As far as I know you should be able to detect them using llGetParcelFlags. I don't know how well that works in practice though. I think I might experiment with that.

Why bother? You are the self centered one. There are other residents in SL other than yourself. Flyers like me just asked for the tools to AVOID the closed off lots. We want to be able to AVOID ban lines and security scripts. The Lindens have made this impossible.

An easy way to make it possible would be allowing you to enter banned parcels for like 20 seconds, then when you leave, seal them for 10 minutes or such.

I stopped being pissed a long time ago. For the longest time, I could freely explore the property that was locked out because the security system kicked me off connection, but I had full control of my avatar in an SL client that had previously rendered that very property. It's very ironic when the people you're kicking off your porn palace turn into ghosts who can freely phase through and look at all your crappy porn. :D

As for boating, you should turn property lines on and drive/sail down the strips of public linden property. These exist through most straits that I've seen and I've managed to cross the continent several times without edit-moving or re-rezzing.

If you REALLY want to be happy driving vehicles, get a flight/boating simulator and be done with crummy viewdistances, lag, sim border crossings, and pointless security scripts.

LOL I am self-centered but I admit it, you see I use to be conceited but now IM just plain PERFRCT!

Anyways Ranma you jump on the soapbox preaching security scripts should be this and that and ban lines need this and that, when as the post above stated you could just get a simulator and have much more fun and not have ot worry about the crap in SL. Yea I agree you cant build your own cool things in those simulators but ya know its still better than getting beat down in SL!

So take this time to plz just stfu and go play air force on a simulator, your is getting old. And nobody really wants to see or read your complaints that you cnat fly in SL anymore!

I would much prefer if SL improved to the point where vehicles could be enjoyable, because SL is a big social world. The flight sims are nicer for flight but it's pretty empty, and even in multiplay everybody else is flying. In the past it's been fun to pass over some land in a Cubey aircraft and see people below doing their own thing. In SL you could be flying a fictional spaceship and pass by someone on a dragon. So many times I'd meet other boaters on the water. That sort of thing just doesn't happen elsewhere, which makes it such a shame that the act of using vehicles in SL has become more painful over time.

Greater viewdistance, better LOD, a severe reduction (or removal) of sim border crossing effects, and a better universal security warning system would vastly improve the experience without hurting anybody else.
