Never fear.

I suspect private labelling will be available at some point, and there will be as many different names for SecondLife as there are islands.

In other words, Linden Lab will give you the ability to customize your own front end client splash screen (with the caveat that people can still click on "map";).

They'll call it something like "Linden Land", and SecondLife will be just one portal into it.

At least I hope they do something like that ... cause SecondLife sure is a dumb name.

I don't quite get why some people are so down on the name "Second Life". I think it's an incredibly evocative name, and is one of the things that initially attracted me to it. At this point, there is zero reason to change the name. The barriers to entry to SL have nothing whatsoever to do with its name.

I suggest that it be renamed "Mr. Valen's Planet." Then, Sinclair and I can go around popping our collars and saying "Yep" alot.

Exactly.

I may have been told to "get a life" a time or two, but I have never been told to "get a first life".

Seems like sort of an invented issue to me.

That was my exactly my reasoning too, only cruder than the way you eloequently put it. It makes no sense--but those games are wonderful because they're done with such whimsy and confidence! :)

I believe that "Final Fantasy" is so-called because when Square wrote the very first game in the series, they were about to go out of business, and they thought it would be the last game they ever wrote. As it turned out, that game turned their entire business around, so they kept the name later into the series as a kind of ironic-joke-thankyou-thing. :)

I quite agree. I believe a voting proposition is in order.

In a cynical mood, it could probably be renamed "Reality Check". :)

Or "Bliss". ( http://www.despair.com/watchmore.html ) :)

Of course, many of these same folks then feel compelled to post in the comment section of some online article, or message board or whatever, saying that people who do not spend all their spare time watching pro football or rigging elections for fun and profit should have their heads examined and their bowels purged. It's inevitable--one simply has to let such commentary roll off one's back.

I <3 you Aldo :)
That post was wonderful.

I'm thinking they should change the name of this place to Earth 2. But I think that name is kind of strange.

Better Than Life!

.... the name of the highly-addictive virtual reality game in Red Dwarf. An apt description of SL :D

*snickers* Us at club republik made a ploy of that game in SL :). its says Better Then Second Life : real life sorta thing hehe :). It was to make fun of the camping chair issue :) But in all honesty most game titles dont fit the game. Final Fantasy for instance. There really isnt a "final" of anything in those games lol. What you guys kind of infer would take the name Half-Life as to having half a life.

The name really doesnt matter it actually makes sense. Its a second life. Its like the real world inside a virtual world (of course without the rules of gravity and the ability to build easy). Again its up to you to get it. And CoCo it still is our world they just run it. We are able to use our imagination. The motto still works until they totally take over all land or make it like the sims where everything is premade. But i digress no real reason to drop the name at all. It was changes from LindenWorld or whatever because it is like a second life.

The people that take it as not having a first life are the same people that have a problem with people that play any mmorpg or online game alot. These people disgust me as they never really try it. Second Life for instance can teach alot of real world skills as well!!!

Hello there,

Someone ring a bell, for this is my very first post.
Excellent idea Ingrid, I am very discriminating about who I talk to about this
"game" in RL, for so many people just dont "get it".
In addition telling someone who has never heard of it, that I am really excited
about this computer thing I do called "Second Life". is totally hilarious.
With this name the wondrous and magical virtual environment that we mutually
engage and work in from the comfort of our homes, will carry the stigma of being for people who have no real lives.
Being in my third week I am confident that to some people I do not have a right
to an opinion, but that has never stopped me before so here goes

Within this amount of time, I have met some absolutely wonderful people.
Some were neighbors and others just at random while exploring.

I have been able to experience things in this virtual reality context
that are just simply impossible in RL.

This is a tool that is incredibly powerful, at present but especially in the future.

I have read several articles referring to the coming "Metaverse" which I interpret to mean "above and beyond" our current collective perception of the
current "physical reality" Universe.
Another reference was to the 3D internet and the coming perceptual challenges to the masses. Once that damn breaks then seeing Grandma and the kids all out buying new graphics cards will just be a normal thing.

As it seems that the next huge conceptual leap for the masses to accept
will be the ability to interact with anyone anywhere without limitations.
Which we already have to an extent with the current Internet.
What present and future technology will bring is nothing short of mind blowing.
I suggest for the present that we refer to this "game" as a "mutual reality context".
The simple fact that the ability to see and communicate with a symbolic representation of the other person, creates an additional layer of bonding.

I hope that this virtual environment becomes huge and universally popular
not only for the markets it creates but also for the continued mixing of cultures in a non threatening manner that allows people from all over the globe to mutually engage in similar challenges together, even be it something as simple as flying, deep chuckle.

I have recently discovered the creative pleasures of spending time in the sandbox. Yesterday I saw person building a classroom, and although I know this is already going on, it was just very inspirational to me.
As I suspect that indeed life itself is just a form of school and that the REAL
truth whatever that may be is much larger than any of us has yet imagined.

So as human culture and technology advance it appears that the only limits there really are, are those that we impose on ourselves. Which should be especially easy to see for those of us who inhabit a world where the actualization of our imagination is a normal occurence.

Thus with that windy and loquacious debut post my vote for the NEW NAME
is....

The Metaverse!!!

I mean why not grab it while its still available.
Obviously it will soon be a global human icon. I have even pointed out to people in the past that xerox started as a company and not a copy. lol.

Great thread Ingrid! ;)

I'm not real hip on the 'Second Life' name from a Jerry Springer standpoint. Sounds like you're having a secondary existence on the side. Maybe I've just been reading too many of those posts about users worrying about the influence their SL will have on their 'first life'.

Something with a little more market appeal would be cool, though it would indeed take research to find something both fitting and not used by every software company with a people-simulator or online community service.
