Time to drop "Second Life" as the name for this place?

From: Ingrid Ingersoll I don't really but I do wonder about how many people write it off before even trying it based on the name. A cool name can do wonders for a product. "Second Life" just isn't very cool at all. when I joined the name didn't make me think bad things. Then again I was playing There before... so my name expectations where not high.

Seriously, who governs what "cool" is?? How do you know we aren't the cool kids and all those nasty remarks are being made by the not so cool people?? huh? ever think about that?? I didn't think so. SecondLife is a great name, and if they don't understand it, they have an obvious lack of imagination that is required to actively perspire (yes I know it means sweat) in OUR world. I don't know about you all, but I do perspire during some of my builds and projects, damn them tiny objects.
Anyways, seriously, who cares if people think we're cool. We're not in High school anymore John Boy.

When a friend of mine told me about Second Life, I admit I did snicker at the name and imagined it to be an online hippie commune. But I was open-minded enough to dismiss that impression and I gave SL a try.
We can rename Second Life to be more mainstream, but it feels like that's just dumbing it down for those who lack the attitude/mentality to enjoy SL to begin with.

From: Ingrid Ingersoll it matters... $$$$$ I don't see it as a negative if the name "Second Life" has had any effect at discouraging folks to try it out based on just the name. If its had any effect at all, it has perhaps throttled the influx of new residents, giving the Lindens time to work out the kinks before it really explodes. By then, I hope, Linden Lab won't be the only grid in town and won't have the only asset server that we all depend on. I think the relatively slow and steady growth, and the introduction of it as more of a game space/playground, will be a good thing in the long run as it develops into something more substantial. It needs to go through puberty. There's still a lot of things that need to be addressed before folks can depend on it for more than just entertainment.

I love the name. What a silly argument those guys put up! You could also say- Hmm why read fictional books? Get out there and get a real life! Why watch drama on TV? Get out there have a real life! Why paint and draw pictues? Have you a problem with real life? And so on.... I mean have these guys no imagination?

From: Aldo Stern But I digress... Boy, did you. For a much more concise take on "get a life": From: someone Originally posted by Gary McGath, in news.admin.net-abuse.email, July 1997 It's a sad commentary on our culture that so many people are convinced that having 'a life' means not valuing or caring about anything. To be 'alive' apparently is to live as a vegetable, consuming, reproducing, but never thinking or having any strong response to anything.

From: Hiro Pendragon Question: What is SL being called in foreign markets like Korea and Germany? It's called Second Life in Germany too. Learning the English language is mandatory in most schools in Germany nowadays. So the name is just fine in Germany (Europe) too, I'd think.

From: Musuko Massiel ""wouldnt we do better as individuals to face up to our problems engaging with each other than just trying to come up with alternatives? and the people having problems with "real life"..""
The internet allows us to interact with thousands of people many, many thousands of miles away, and meet new people we would never meet by just bumping into people on the street.
There is no "right" way to meet and interact with people.
And immersing yourself into a fantasy means you have problems with real life? Well, I guess we'd better do away with literature then.
Musuko. Exactly!! I 'would' get rid of my hundreds of books...but 'reading' is still an acceptable form of entertainment (remember Farenheit 411?). I find it incredible how people who never have experienced something can have the right to deem another's experience as not 'real'. I have given up getting frustrated with the scoffers; they just will never know how great the online community is; especially in SL.

Torley, I think the idea of FF is that it's supposed to be the last story in each world. But, Final Point) I've always thought that was annoying because I wanted a sequel to my favorites, Final Point II) it's not very hopeful, because it implies that the world never has legends and epics and stories after that, essentially rendering it a static world, and Final Point III) X-2 and Advent Children both throw that right out the window (even though the latter isn't a game). Which is fine with me, because VII and X were my favorites.
Anyway, I've never much cared for the name Second Life either, but I think there's no practical way or incentive for LL to change it now, not without major changes and upgrades to the world itself at the same time.
Probably it will change naturally when LL opens the software, and people start forking the code to build their own sorts of worlds by removing the limitations SL has imposed. I wouldn't be surprised to see people referring unofficially to variants as "Third Life", the Metaverse (duh), the Wired (Lain), the Digital Web (Mage), the Matrix (shadowrun/the matrix), the Game Grid (Tron), etc. for awhile.
If you want it changed sooner, probably the best way to do it would be to get the USERS to subvert it from the inside ... agree on a new name and use that primarily. From LL's perspective, that would make the process significantly easier.
I'll not hold my breath, though.

Let's call it Fate Gardens. I could be compelled to vote for that.
Seriously, Second Life will always be called Second Life and will always be remembered as that experimental virtual world that Philip Rosedale conceived and dominated. It'll likely even migrate to ghetto status and remain a viable playground for years to come. But the name will never change.
The good news is that groups will soon (I use that term very loosely) indeed be able to fork their own versions into independent grids that they can name whatever they like. That's going to be very explosive and exciting.

If it hadn't already been used so much, I'd go with "Another World".
Or on a similar note, they may have missed out on There, but what about "Elsewhere" or even "Somewhere"?
Or could be really cheesy and go for "Metaverse Alpha" or something like that..

Another World General SLospital As The Grid Turns Two Lifes To Live All My Alts The 1/4 Days of Our Lives Port Caledon Dark Foot Shadows or Since SL is not There then maybe we should call it Here. Then when folks ask what world we play in, we can say, " I play Here." "You play here?" "No I play in Here." "Where?" (Points to computer screen) " Over here!" "Oh... there!" "Auggfhhhhh!" Where's Abbott & Costello when you need them?!?

From: Elvawin Rainbow ElvaLand!!! plants her flag and claims it Damn! That's dashed cunning of you! ... We stole countries with the cunning use of flags. Just sail around the world and stick a flag in. "I claim India for Britain!" And they're going "You can't claim us, we live here! Five hundred million of us!" "Do you have a flag? ... No flag, no country!"

It makes no sense--but those games are wonderful because they're done with such whimsy and confidence!
