Jeska Linden: Hello everyone - we are currently handling an attempted grid-wide attack from earlier this evening. Login has been limited to Lindens-only, please try not rez or build objects until we have cleared up the issue. We apologize for any inconvenience.
Jeska said that to the world at 6:30 SL TIME!

We shouldn't have kept bumping that loser thread, " Lindens removing stuff off my land". I guess it gave them ideas.

Thanks for the info, Jeska and Altruima. Please tell me charges will be pressed and an example will be made. This kind of thing is getting way too popular.

Formula for preventing grid-wide attacks
12-12-2005 18:53
2-Step forumula for preventing grid-wide attacks: 1) Shore up your software to prevent such (not always easy, but can be done. Just get someone creative to try and figure out ways to crash the system and fix the problem before the wrong people figure it out). 2) Several step process: * Contact FBI * FBI takes over * FBI arrests culprit * Linden Lab posts running account on what happens * Other griefers *might* think twice about trying same thing Now mind you, griefers are pretty durn stupid, so even this might not clue them in. But it might make the rest of us feel better to learn that dufus #18 is in his 7th month of jail awaiting trial for being involved in an act of computer vandalism. Shoot, even griefers might be smart enough to figure that one out.

There was actually a half-assed attempt to do this last night - except the iscript kiddie ('cause that's all they are, really...) forgot to properly set up the self-replication scheme, so you got a bunch of annoying cubes that said "Object: cannot find object Object" when they tried to spawn more.
I happened to alert the lindens m'self, I think a few others got it... so they were forewarned for when it happened NOW.

Jeska Linden: Everyone will be logged off in a moment in order to shut down the grid, identify the affected sims and roll them back before the attack. This should correct the content problems. In the interim, please login to preview ( http://secondlife.com/preview).

Being forewarned, why didn't they do something about it? 2. Another self-replication grid killer? ( if that is the case....) When is LL going to wise up and stop up that particular leak? I mean, how many times do the kids have to get into the gun cabinet before the parent locks the cabinet? chee... 3. What do I care? I have recently discovered that there are other things to do in life than SL and you know what? They're fun too-- and a LOT less stress...

They did. Note the current rapid response. No, it's not the happy magic "stop it perfectly" response we might like, but they clamped down on it quick and I noticed very little general grid slowdown (I was riding out the storm in a private sim).

What exactly is a grid attack???
12-12-2005 20:05
I am trying to read everyone's response to this mess, so i can figure out what is happening. I have played alot of other online games, and although new to SL..I have never seen this happen before. I am thinking that someone came on and 'hacked' into the game? Just trying to get a clue what is happening. Thank u in advance for the explantions

Just trying to get a clue what is happening. Thank u in advance for the explantions All the sims that make up SL is collectively called "the grid" (funny it makes even more sense with the current default texture ). So thus a grid attack is basicly an attack on a global scale wich affects a handful to all of SL.
