Well apprently they had time while the gird was down to make a new interactive map on the homepage.

Looks like click on RED DOTS will pop-up photos sent to Snapzilla and GREEN DOTS will show event listings.

I did like the overlay of the Total World Population and those Inword. Hope that comes back at some point.

Furthermore, as Second Life goes to the Metaverse, and this becomes an open platform, Linden Lab risks lawsuit in court and [attachment culling] will, I repeat WILL be reverse in court.

Seems a wee bit clunky at the moment, but a great concept to incorporate and very fun to navigate.

It would be great to know more about the sim one is gazing upon at any given moment, and the ability to TP would be FANTASTIC.

This is our extended load test... the "real" map deployment will be in the context of a homepage revamp with additional map features.

Cheers,
Lawrence

Interactive map now on secondlife.com/map
11-10-2005 21:09
Benny Linden has deployed the rockin' interactive map on secondlife.com/map. Soon, this interactive map will be on the homepage, but we'd like to test it further.

It works in Safari 2.0, IE 6.0, and Mozilla Firefox. In the future, we hope to provide support for more browsers.

Have fun, and keep providing your great comments!

I just noticed that as well.

Ever since the upgrade, I've been tempted to finish off the "bullseye" I have on my land. Now that it's on the front page, I'm even more tempted.

Reuben responded in this thread.

From: Reuben Linden
After a couple months of experiments with SLTV, we've decided to suspend the service for now. Like many early experiments, SLTV taught us a lot, mainly about how challenging it is to produce high-quality live SL-video streams on a daily basis.

Going forward, we will continue to advocate and support experiments in live broadcasts and machinima, as we see this as a very exciting and promising area.

As for the correlation between live video and signups, it was and always will be hard to accurately correlate features with signup rates. What is undeniable is that people are more likely to be interested in joining Second Life when they have a chance to see it in action; something SLTV accomplished well. In the future, we'll continue to experiment with ways to acheive that effect for prospective customers.

Just ran into Lawrence Linden in the WA (before it crashed again) and he said the following:

Me: Is the World Population and such coming back?
HIM: Yes

HIM: and I'm gonna fix the damn in-world transactions counter. it uses the previous day's transactions to estimate the rate it should count up.

ME: Why did it only show events for 5pm SLT?
HIM: not sure about the events... we are filtering out the "garbage" events with bogus descriptions

The ones best described by this sort of description:
re7gy9wrf9-w7ag9-948974ewc89yw9wouhf90wu79fhwefwa0h8sfe
w09af09wahewa907h909h0waef09wahf90wahfwahf0fy09yhwaes0

u-9wse9fwaujf-wusf-9uwauef-uawspofpowajfwapeojfpawjpefpoew
jef-pwjf-pajwefajwe-0fw

If that's the best you can say about your event then don't expect to see it on the homepage.

Cheers,
Lawrence

Hmm, odd, I'll ask Benny to double check the date display tomorrow. Thanks for bringing it to our attention.
