Looking about the world since flex prims came into being and I see a lot of very expensive objects that simply use flex prims. They are nice to play with, adds movement to the world, but a flex plant for 150 lindens? A flex prim skirt outfit for 700? I do ask, are they worth it?

I asked "Is it really worth that?" before flex prims come to be. I've been watching some designers price 2 piece non prim outfits for $400.

I guess the value is whatever someone is willing to pay for it.

That's where some people who price lower have a chance to become better known designers... if people dont want to pay the high prices, they can simply shop around.

I'd say they are only worth it if it is you don't know how to achieve the same effect or don't want to spend your own time by sitting down and making it yourself.

high prices won't last long as more people begin to produce flexiprim objects and the market drives the price down. Just like the Animation bubble after 1.4(was it 1.4 when we got animations? i forget these things).

I find item pricing in SL to be freaking hilarious, really.
Unscripted, 11 prim swords for 300L. shoddy rifles for 600L. An my personal favorite, which I saw once in a Gorean sim, a bowl that changes color, and has a partcile script, 2 prims, for *200L*.

I sell my gear for rather cheap. Historical replicas for like 150 and under, and I love giving stuff away. *shrugs* ut then, for me its not about making cash, its about seeing people enjoy my work.

good for you! I wish there were more like you :)

I do suggest you dont visit the land and economy forum... its most about people getting rid of stipends and freebies and raising prices to go with the dropping rate of L. Yes, prices are freaking ridiculous and only getting worse.

Why would you want a flex prim skirt? Wouldn't it go straight through the front of your legs and.. umm....? Or have they found a way around that already? :)

I bought a flex prim skirt with top & underwear for 300L last night. So not everybody is gouging people.

And the only reason I bought it was because my first efforts at a flex-prim skirt flopped miserably (pun intended). I'm sure I'll get the hang of it this weekend :)

Er, not that simple.

1. Not all prims can be made flexible. Furthermore you don't have a choice regarding which part of the prim is the anchor.

2. You have to set appropriate parameters per prim to ge the right prim behavior.

Most prim skirt outfits were around 200-250 before flex prims, if they included top and shorts. Some even included gloves and stockings. So I didn't mind the 300L, I just wanted to see how it looked.

The designer did a good job, but when I make mine I'm going to keep them from flipping up so much when I walk :)

Totally up to the person making it and dependent on the the person agreeing to buy it for that price. Flex prim skirt for 700 though? ... I dunno, does it come with a wind tunnel to show off the flexibility?

Since it is a bit time consuming learning to play with flex prims, I can see the reason for the markup. But... I still think once people get over how to work it, or the learning curve for it is lessened with time and patches, the markup at those places may go down.

If you want it badly enough, you will pay the extra $L. If you cant afford the extra, maybe, just maybe, you will learn to build it yourself, and then sell it for less than the other guy and make a fortune. :)

I myself only would MUCH rather build my own stuff. Its exciting to me to be out and about and discover one of my products in use.

Some products don't sell. I lower the price on them and they start selling. Hmmm. I guess I am greedy enough to realize that 5 sales at $10 is worth more than no sales at $100.

The moral of this story? Prims aren't the only thing that needs to be flexible.

I agree. This week, these items are a novelty. As soon as folks master the techniques, they'll be everywhere, on everything, and items won't be priced at a premium.

There are bargains out there however. I grabbed up a few great items I saw posted on the forums: cute dress, $150L; lovely hair, $50L; earrings, $0L. My very favorite item so far (and, happened to be a gift from a pal) is an American flag that comes with a waving animation for my avi: I feel like a drum majorette!

I think the flexiprim is inspiring a whole new wave of creativity in folks and I'm excited to see what folks do next.

Plus, all the movement just makes me smile and giggle!

of course its not *THAT* simple.. but the messing around I have done thus far it seems simple enough.. for a prim skirt I found the default parameters are fine..

We saw this when animations first came out in 1.4 - hundreds of default and static pose animations selling for outrageous prices.

Dances were akin to 2 static poses on a turntable, and charged out the yang too.

Its the new toy and it will pass - we saw the same thing with HUD as well. Eventually it will pass from a novelty back to a tool, prices will drop, and people won't be trying to shoehorn the new feature into everything they can think of.

The more things change, the more they stay the same.

I was right though - first thing to come out would be a zillion flexi prim hair :P

Just like the 'old hair' made of 10 zillion torii... it will pass and people will move on to make more subtle and artistic things.

There are ways around it -- mostly, anyway

I have a couple of flex dresses already -- I was willing to pay a premium to be a fashion pioneer. (I've also been playing with a design of my own.)

The one from Blaze is a miniskirt which mostly manages to stay in the right place on the body. It uses multiple prims and clever construction. I do find that for dancing, I prefer to wear it with a matching color underskirt (a piece of basic clothing that I made, nothing fancy), or else flashes of hip occasionally show. But for normal walking, the underskirt sometimes shows awkwardly, and it's better without.

I also have a long gown from Sherona DeGroot. That one has a rigid hip portion, I believe, with flexible pieces down lower; there is enough spread in the hip part to keep the flexiprims well away from your body. (The one I've been working on uses the same concept, though not as elaborately.) I don't find the movement of this one as natural-looking; the flexible parts flap somewhat oddly. It's a very beautiful design, though; it would be a good gown even without flex.

I am confident that the designers of SL will find even better solutions over time.

Sounds like you've got the same one from Blaze that I bought. Remember, it's modifyable. If you want it to flap less, you could change the flex parameters of the prims; perhaps a touch more gravity would make it look even better to your eyes. I agree that it flaps a bit too much for walking, but it looks GREAT for dancing -- get thee to a salsafest!!

I rebuilt a dress into flexiprim, then showed the formula and technique to the original dressmaker. Was fun. :) Weird thing though, the permissions changed at some point during or after construction. Instead of no transfer, it became no copy.

What I can't believe is that I spent an afternoon scanning stuffed animals for my big, fluffy puma tail! xD
