First, congratulations to all who were involved in making the first SLCC a success! I'm sorry that I was unable to attend - maybe next year. What I'm really interested to know is if meeting some of your fellow residents, even those with whom you may have formed a not-so-glorious opinion of, has changed your opinion of them now that you've met them in person?

Heheh. Answer carefully, folks. Make sure you've read the blogs of those you met.

Remember that thread about your 1 yr malaise where a lot of people recommended that you take a break from SL but I suggested staying and trying other methods to rejuvenate your spirit and enthusiasm for SL? Can I change my vote to "take a break"? What was I thinking !?!?!?

From: Margaret Mfume Can I change my vote to "take a break"? What was I thinking !?!?!? You can, but it's already done. I'm already taking a break from SL -- mostly enforced by near-dead brain when I get home. However, I am keeping up to date on the haps in SL via the forums. Which means you'll not be free of this particular abrasive lad for awhile, I'm afraid.

My answer would be no. I didn't bother trying to learn people's RL names -- way too difficult. Fundamentally there were no surprises when it came to personality. As to what people looked like, well it didn't really matter.

Really fascinating question to ask, Juro. I'm curious to see future responses here. I wonder if there's anyone who previously didn't get along on the SL Forums or inworld, but since meeting each other offline @ SLCC, have become good chums! This would be nice.

There was no one who gave me a worse impression after meeting them in person. I liked everyone before, and still feel that way. I can think of several people I met, however - whose passion for Second Life was way more apparent to me when I met them in person, then is normally worded with their text in game or in the forums. A few more, that while I thought they were brilliant before... now I think they're amazingly brilliant. Most of all, I left the SLCC with this feeling that all of us are important to SL in our own way - and each and every one of us is making an important contribution to this world whether we realize it or not.

i can think of one person I passionately dislike in-world, but a dozen drinks and a little dancing and I was hugging him like a brother. Everyone was either as nice and personable as they are in world or better. Excellent Excellent time.

MJ This is the sort of thing I will be discussing tonight at my event at 5pm SL Time at the Magnolia Beach Learning Center in Guam. After that I will post the log with comments.

MJ In view of some of the people who organised this conference or were vocal about their support for this conference, if they did anything other than obviously shun one of those, then I'd have to call hypocricy loud and clear. But then get a room full of fanboyz and gurlz together and I guess all concept of hypocricy goes out the window. So come on spill, or are you all good friends now all of a sudden? PS. And I've never stated my opinion either way on either of those people, but my gosh, so many others have...and so vociferously!

What? You think they should have shunned these two if they disapproved of their posts or activities or whatever? Otherwise it would be hypocrisy? I would think not shunning them and being pleasant to them - regardless of how you feel about them or their thoughts and activities - would be the POLITE thing to do. coco

Before this post degrades into a 'P&A' thread - I should note that my question was inspired by my own experiences meeting other residents in the 'real' world - all of which I walked away with even more respect and warm fuzzies for those people. Seeing as with some people there is a role-playing aspect, I would suspect that quite a few are very different in the flesh than they are inworld - that difference is what I was curious about. So please, continue - but let's not make it all about P&A.

a couple personal observations..
10-12-2005 17:50
Prokofy is one smart cookie! i'm well aware of Prok's reputation within the forums, but in RL it was a slightly different story. more cordial, but still good ol' Prok! i mean to say, you knew who you were talking to.. but you also got a better view of the intelligence behind the SLer. personally, i found it to be a pleasurable meeting. Anshe.. well, while Eggy got right to the point, i'll clarify my take a bit. she was stunning.. beautiful sense of style.. and yes, i told her so. i also saw her keen perception in action. proper, yet fun loving. a smooth blend of business and pleasure. i respect her more than i had before, just by merely observing her 'everyday' type of actions. i'll admit.. i did a fair amount of passive people-watching. you can read alot about someone just by watching how they walk through a room, or how they sit and listen to a presentation.. how they meet and greet.. and so on. overall, i too came away more impressed with our community. the excitement and passion for SL that flowed through everyone was a palpable essence. for those who couldn't make it, i hope you get to make it to the next official SLCC.. whenever (and wherever) that may be. simply because, on one hand.. it's a sensation, an experience, not to be missed.. and on the other hand, simply because i had such a ball meeting everyone that i'd like to both see them again and to meet more SLers!! also, Flip.. it was awesome meeting you in person after going nuts for the preceding week or so! like a sigh of relief that everything came togther! heheh.. oh yeah.. and lest anyone be left with doubts.. yes. Philip is one cool cat.. especially in his 'special' outfit! lol..

Juro, to answer your question --
- it's changed my opinion of people very much so.
In all but 2 cases, for the better.

I can't say it changed my opinion of anyone. I did meet some residents I didnt know very well or at all, that I think I will be talking to more often now. The word passion we keep hearing in all these replies is what comes to my mind also. I was so taken and inspired by the passion so many people shared about Second Life.
I am wearing my SL Bling neckless proudly, how about you all?

Second Life needs more georgeous female techies like Digi Vox. Prok was quite civil. Everyone was pretty much the way I expected as far as personalities go. Having the opportunity to meet everyone has really motivated me to remain deeply involved in the community!

Having the opportunity to meet everyone has really motivated me to remain deeply involved in the community! Wow! Thanks! The SLCC has inspired me to try to bring more girls to the world of computer science through scripting in SL. No formal plans yet, but get ready! I've spent a long number of hours the past couple days looking through stats on women in CS and they're more miserable than I thought. Computer Science and Engineering seem to have THE lowest percentage of women of all the sciences. (Somehow I've always been around lots of other women in my field so I just hadn't really noticed). The SLCC crowd was the friendliest bunch of people I've ever met. Everyone was open and genuinely interested in each other. I didn't change my opinion on anyone in particular, but now I'm extra impressed with my fellow residents. I met some people in RL who I'm friends with now in SL, which is pretty cool. Well, I guess I did change my opinion of Prok. Before I thought he was brilliant and wordy, but it turns out he can be succinct as well. Still brilliant. Or crazy. That's a fine line that will be drawn by history.
