Popular places, dwell ideas?

Ok I don't know about other property owners, but I know am becoming frustrated in what to do to attract people.
Sureley we have our shops in Le Cadre which seem to be maintaining a great deal of traffic, we have also hosted events but get a very small turn out... we have also tried other routes by making Le Cadre a better place to be... but it is very hard to compete when it comes to 80k plus dwell on the popular places.
Do we want to put out camping chairs to attract people? not really...
So what are our options? What do people want to see? where do people want to go?
Sadly it seems people only want to go to places where they can make money..

Any suggestions and feedback would be greatly appreciated! :)

Money chairs have greatly inflated Traffic for already popular places with money to burn. I also have a business where I'm looking for traffic boosting oportunities. I have SLingo and Blood 21 installed in my club right now getting ready for my grand re-opening in hopes to boost traffic. One thing to look into wich I am is MetaAdverse's advertisement program.

Any other ideas from those who are already successful would be greatly appritiated (and please no "Get yourself some money chairs" BS, they're more trouble then they're worth and are more likely to put you in the hole then anything else).

Similar Issue

I have been experiencing a similar issue. It seemed to start falling off when the weekly bonus was cut. I think that people feel they have less "Expendable income" and therefore are beginning to horde what they have in fear of more cuts to the stipend thus creating a recession in SL.

Thats possible as well. For me I noticed a big drop in traffic when those "Impeach Bush" signs poped up in my back yard. My traffic dropped from 1500+ to 227 in a matter of 5 days of the signs' arrival.

12/20 of the popular places listings mention free money/money handouts. It's pretty sad... this is the SL Community, bow to the almighty $.

You hit the nail right on the head. These are some of the things newbs have told me:
A: We only get $L50 a week stripend
B: Most clothing, cars, etc. cost in the hundreds of $L(1 months stripend to buy one outfit)
C: Most club events seem to be won by club employees or club regulars
D: How can we even enter most club events if we don't have the clothing to compete?
Those are just some I have heard in the past few weeks, and as the population is now more free basic accounts, I think the games/money trees/campchairs or anyother means of free money will be the crowd drawers.

I haven't been there, ( at least I don't think I did) so what I say isn't a criticism towards you...

But... make the place unique, make it exclusive (a la The Badass's Table) and people will scramble to go there. I n your case, because you WANT people, make it a club where yoi hve to pay to get in. :P

Ron I do agree this might have something to do with it since we are sharing the same signs in our view :( I even notified the person but they would do nothing. Hopefully for us both Lindens will step in and take them away, but not holding my breath.

Hmmm. I'm out of ideas then. At least out of ideas that aren't TOS violations.

If I can interject here, I think attempting to compete with the dwell-inflated monsters stomping around at the top of the list is going to be a losing battle. Unless, of course, you do what I think you should, and just wait. They can't keep that up forever; it's too much of a money hole to be paying 50+ people lindens 24/7, on top of host salaries, event payouts, and so on.

So perhaps just forget the gigantic dwell monsters; they'll eat themselves soon enough.

As far as attracting people the "legit" ways, making a place unique and useful to go to goes a long way. Many people have different ideas of what that means.

The only experience I have in these things is the Midnight City sim. They consistently get enough dwell to qualify for DI, yet as far as I know, there aren't many events there, no camping chairs, and no piles of money balls lying around. Instead, it's a unique destination: an urban setting filled to the brim with interesting attractions (the old movie theatre, Fauna Park) and extremely high-quality merchants. People come for the merchants, but they stay for the exploration. MC is absolutely dense with content. I find something new there every time I visit.

Also, it doesn't hurt to have a group of "regulars" that are friendly and fun to be around; people inevitably go where the green dots are. If they're inclusive enough, the group expands and sustains itself.

Just some thoughts.

I agree with Lordfly. Places like Midnight City are fun to visit. Sometimes I go there even if I dont feel like shopping. Why? Because I know sometimes I'll run into some cool and talented people hanging out there and just having fun. And the place is relaxing and proves a friendly but intrigueing environment. The place isnt as 'in your face' nor 'cluttered for maximum profit' looking as traditional 'malls'. I go to other places like Transylvania for similar reasons plus they have DJs all the time and people arnt always crammed into a club. We just hang out and talk and listen to music. But there are other places like Le Cadre and PixelDolls that I just go to, do my shopping and leave. Why? Because there usually isnt anyone hanging around or whatever. But its a fine balance. If I feel a place is too aggressive in trying to get me to stick around, I'll bolt.

Just from my own little world...

IMHO, it all depends on your personal measure of success. The popular places list means little to me. I determine my success on people having a good time, wanting to come back, and getting something out of the experience. If I can make new residents feel 'connected' to Second Life thru the loose network of friendly relationships at the Shelter, I feel like I've succeeded.

I think if you make your guests feel like they are genuinely wanted and welcomed as a person and not a number, they'll come back. Camping chairs (for me at least) are not the way to acheive that.

I do care about having a steady stream of folks come by and visit, because that in turn pays the bills thru developer incentive. But I've found that if I focus my efforts on making people feel good first, the rest comes on its own.

I'm thinking that there needs to be a store or something created for the specific purpose of catering to those who survive on the $50L a week stipend. I mean.. kinda like a 99cent store, but at least have something DECENT worth buying there. I'm thinking of doing this, but I'm caught up trying to get my mecha stuff out as well as my artwork RL.

Besides, clothing stuff isn't my forte. My forte is in intricately detailed mecha avatars, and building construction.

It seems to me that what Linden has done by removing the reputation bonuses has been to change the economics of the game from one where you get money for interacting with people to one where you get money by contributing to the score of a builder who then gets money from interacting with you... no matter how forced the interaction is.

Perhaps the Lindens would do better to reduce the developer bonuses based on the amount that's going out through the camping systems, and put those Lindens back into circulation at the lower levels by bringing back the reputation bonuses... and giving people an incentive to do something fun like flying an impossibly cool plane in circles around a gothic citadel on a mountaintop... because they didn't have to spend the time they would have been flying sitting in a chair earning the money for the plane.

Check out "UFOnly" (Upload Fee Only). Eternalynn has some great stuff, that's very inexpensive. :)

Hey, Ironraptor, do you suppose someone would sit in a camping chair if they could drive a rented mecha around a battlefield shooting up other newbs in exchange for their dwell?

Also, I know there are a couple of secondhand stores out there. They're pretty good at keeping things low cost. As well as a store that everything is less than a certain amount and maybe someone else can help me, but it's specifically for newer players, and hm, I'm blanking on the name. But there is a secondhand store called Burleigh's, it's pretty nice there, and the owner is super nice. You might want to take a look around there. If you can't find it, IM me IW, and I'll help you out.

Well... Our outtfits range anywhere from $100L to to $250L, I think that is pretty fair and on a lower price range then most designers. And they are very good quality..

I think Midnight Citry is a beautiful sim and a great place to relax, but it still doesnt attract many people...
Thier dwell for the day is 4609 and 2 people currently there, so again, it seems even great builds and a relaxing place doesnt attract many people =/
