So for those of you before 6/6/6 who would be old enough to remember.. do you miss the telehubs at all? This was something that crossed my mind earlier and I do kinda miss the kind of stuff I'd find on long hauls from the telehubs that I was forced to travel. Granted I did hate how laggy they were and the abuse many hubs put us through regarding people traps and such. But somehow I do miss them, just a little bit even if it was because of the forced traveling.

I miss them also. I thought it added more value to the land (especially the land closest to the telehubs). I remember thinking "I HAVE to get a piece of land right near a telehub'. My first piece of good land was at the edge of the sim and I would have to fly there (before I knew how to landmark LOL).
Now, all the land is accessible via direct teleporting, so the value has definitley changed in that respect. _____________________

I don't miss them, but removing them definitely changed the dynamics of both travel and land sales. I like things that strengthen the sense of place in SL, but 9 mo's later I can't say t-hubs did more or less than P2P in that respect. I do find I'm using the map screen a lot now, rather than landmarks. With the level of detail now, if you know what sim or even general area you're hitting, you can usually spot your destination on the map.

Given all the access restrictions, security orbs, griefers and other crud out there, I am quite happy not to be forced in most cases to fly from a telehub to my actual landmarked destination. I actually find it rather inconvenient that in places like Furmation Skymall and Serenity Woods I am forced to teleport to a specific point and then fly to where I want to go in the sim or on that particular parcel. I do fondly remember my early days in SL, gliding over new terrain and seeing what was between the telehub and some store I was seeking. Sometimes I would run into a tall structure that hadn't quite rezzed for me yet, but other times I found some truly interesting places along the way, that I never would have seen otherwise. But now, I just find the prospect of getting bounced around by a security script or trigger-happy resident to be too daunting. So I rarely do any travel other than direct PTP teleports.
On the other hand, I can see where some parcel or sim based teleport restrictions still make sense. For example, you can't TP directly to a location on Meeting Island unless you live there, without going through their entry point where they explain the rules for that sim. I guess it's similar for most of the Gorean sims, which force you to TP to a point where an explanation of the local rules is available. The large parcel where I have one of my homes has the default TP point set to the far side of a ridge from my house and the other homes. If you don't live in that parcel, you don't teleport right onto my front lawn just because you clicked there on the map. But do I miss telehubs? No, not in the least. _____________________

I love PTP! I'm old enough to have experienced the tail end of universal telehubs, and I regarded them as annoying, bizarre, and needlessly restrictive. The current setup is much better.

Nope. Not one fucking bit. Having to go to a destination I'd have to wait for two minutes at a hub in order to FUCKING START MOVING due to commercial properties. Even then I had to get up to like 700m so I wouldn't run into shit specifically placed to block my path.

I remember Telehubs. I remember having to fly a loooongggg distance to get from a telehub to any of the surrounding sims. I remember the lag around them. I remember trying to find a specific spot, with a landmark and constantly having to fly through about 8 three-story strip malls to get to it. Do I miss them? Not really, since you can find the telehubs themselves as freebies.
*shudders* I'd hate to think what would happen if we had them now... security orbs and no-passage zones aplenty. _____________________

I don't miss telehubs, nor the crufted neon crap they used to attract on their margins.
Good riddance. _____________________

problem with ptp the sense of community is going away from SL. Soon SL will be just a group of bubbles which will become more and more isolated from each other as time passes.

Soon SL will be just a group of bubbles which will become more and more isolated from each other as time passes. I also thought that ptp would take away from the sense of connectedness one gets from flying, or walking, or driving, or sailing to a destination, even if its only across one or two sim borders. What I've seen so far though, is that newbes do fly around and explore, a lot. Those of us that have been here prior to the release of 1.7 already have that understanding of SL, partiularly if you were here when all there was was what is now the central continent. From what I've seen the newbes are getting that sense as well. I suppose I don't miss the telehubs so much as I miss the time when there was telehubs. Remember the 1.6 release, probably the single best release of SL yet. And 1.7 was probably the worst. Those were the days,... sigh _____________________

It's hard to be a close community of 100,000 people... We're already part of a community that is made up of the people we associate with most often.. Through them we are connected to many many more.. Sometimes we meet these new people, or not ;0 Whatever _____________________

I think my first post ever on the forums was disagreeing with a piece by Prok that somebody linked to about P2P being bad. Telehubs went away quite soon after I really became active in SL, but I remember that as a new resident the av traps and adverts that surrounded them really, really annoyed me, I hated having to fly up to 100m+ before things fully rezzed around me, and flying 700m to a store from the telehub, well, that's very irritating.
However. Now that I have a bit more experience and a better view of SL's society, I can see that common meeting places are important things in maintaining a sense of space, and telehubs did perform a service there. They weren't necessarily ideal for that purpose but nothing has actually replaced them there. Infohubs just didn't work, either because they were abandoned or they weren't suitable, I don't know, but there was no real reason to go to an infohub if you didn't have to, and there aren't many around. I don't think we're ever going to see telehubs again and I'm not convinced they were that terrific anyway, but I do want to see *something* to make the mainland more of an actual place rather than a set of plots you P2P between - public space of some sort, roads, parks, special Linden locations, whatever. |

Telehubs offered very little of value. They can be useful in specific instances, and landpoints as "mini hubs" have obvious uses, but the big central telehub system was clearly a mistake.
I don't see SL's sense of "community" going away, at least, no more than the world at large. There's only so many people that can fit in your monkeysphere, after all! _____________________
