No, the question is how could ANYONE think that even in the most optimistic scenario that Google Earth would EVER been a competitor to SL?
It's about the technology, not the content.

I'd enjoy visiting 3D representations of places that I couldn't afford to see in RL and I'd welcome to chance to wander round shop simulations as well. I don't know what this means for the travel business unless they're willing to join in this new venture.

I downloaded the free version Google Earth but the resolution wasn't good enough to make out my home area let alone a car - is the priced version better in that respect?

Nah, it's just got more features. I believe the images are the same ones used for Google Maps.
